Chapter 237: A Fool’s Desperation

A sudden burst of laughter rang through the busy street, causing several pedestrians to turn their heads in curiosity. Delphinia clutched her stomach, her body slightly bent forward as she laughed uncontrollably. Tears prickled the corners of her eyes as she struggled to regain her breath.

"Oh, gods, this is priceless!" she gasped between breaths, wiping at the corners of her eyes as another wave of laughter bubbled up from her chest. She tried to compose herself, but one look at Kai’s bewildered expression sent her spiraling into another fit of giggles.

Kai stood stiffly in front of her, his brows furrowed, confusion laced across his sharp features. His hands curled into fists by his sides, his lips pressed into a thin line. He shifted uncomfortably under the amused stares of passing strangers.

"Why are you laughing?" he asked, his voice laced with irritation.

Delphinia exhaled sharply, straightening up. "Because it’s funny," she said, barely suppressing another giggle. "You’re funny, Kai. Do you even hear yourself?" She shook her head, lips curling into a smirk.

Kai’s brows furrowed even deeper as he stared at her, confusion flickering in his eyes, but then something else flashed there, something that made Delphinia pause for just a second. His voice, when he spoke, was surprisingly calm, even though she could feel the tension radiating off him.

"Yeah?" Kai said, his lips curling into a tight smile. "I love you, Delphinia."

Delphinia’s heart skipped a beat, but before she could react, the words hit her like a ton of bricks. She blinked, then threw her head back, her laugh bubbling up uncontrollably. Her chest shook with it, and she couldn’t stop herself even if she wanted to. It was too much—so much.

"Oh my god," she gasped, wiping at her eyes as tears threatened to spill. "Please, stop. Really."

Kai stood there, stiff as a board, his fists still clenched, his face now a mix of confusion and frustration. "What’s so funny about that?"

"You love me? You want me back?" She burst into laughter again. "Oh, gods, stop. My stomach hurts." She clutched her abdomen, tears of mirth glistening on her lashes.

Kai’s jaw tightened. "I’m serious." His voice was firm, his dark eyes hardening.

Delphinia’s laughter faded, though amusement still lingered in her gaze. She studied him, her expression shifting into one of disbelief. "You’re serious?" she repeated, tilting her head. "You actually mean this?"

Kai took a step closer. "I do. I want you back, Delphinia."

The amusement in her eyes disappeared entirely, replaced by something cold and unyielding. She scoffed. "You really expect me to leave Evander for you?" Her lips curled into a sneer. "You must be delusional."

"I love you," Kai said, desperation creeping into his tone. "I made a mistake, I see that now. I should’ve never let you go."

Delphinia inhaled deeply, as if trying to ground herself, before exhaling sharply. "Oh, please. Love?" She let out a humorless chuckle. "You don’t even know what that word means. If you did, you wouldn’t have treated me the way you did." Her gaze turned sharp, cutting. "I’m married, Kai. Happily. To a man who actually loves and cherishes me. A man who would never humiliate me, never betray me." She took a deliberate step forward, her voice low but firm. "I wouldn’t leave Evander for you even if you were the last man on earth."

Kai’s face twisted in frustration. "I’m better than him," he snapped. "I can give you everything he does—more. Just give me a chance and I’ll prove it."

Delphinia’s lips pressed into a thin line as Kai’s words hung in the air. Better than Evander? She blinked, her heart tightening in disbelief at the audacity of his statement. What kind of delusion was Kai living in to think he could even compare to Evander, let alone be better than him?

Delphinia blinked at him before scoffing. "Better than Evander?" she repeated, laughing dryly. "That’s rich. Evander is superior to you in every possible way. He’s strong, successful, kind. He loves me with every fiber of his being. And," she leaned in slightly, smirking, "he’s amazing in bed. I nearly lost my voice screaming his name over and over again." She gave him a pitying look. "So no, Kai. You don’t even stand a chance."

Kai’s face turned red, his fists trembling. "I know I treated you badly," he said through gritted teeth, "but I regret it. I want to make things right."

Delphinia’s amusement disappeared entirely. Her expression darkened, her lips curling into a sneer. "And you think I’ll just forgive and forget? That I’ll come running back to you like some obedient little fool?" She clicked her tongue. "You must have truly lost your mind."

Kai clenched his jaw. "I’m sorry, Delphinia. I want to fix what I broke."

She took a step closer, her eyes blazing. "Let me make something very clear to you, Kai." Her voice was sharp, unwavering. "Even if you got down on your knees and begged, even if you crawled through the mud for my forgiveness, I would never, ever go back to you. Not in this lifetime, not in the next." She pointed a finger at his chest, her voice filled with venom. "You lost me the moment you betrayed me. And I will never let you hurt me again."

She turned on her heel, ready to leave, but Kai’s hand shot out, grabbing her wrist in a bruising grip.

Delphinia gasped, her eyes widening in shock. "Let go of me."

Kai’s face was tense, his grip tightening. "Why is it so hard for you to give me a second chance?"

Rage flared in Delphinia’s chest. She screamed, her voice piercing through the street, drawing the attention of everyone around them.

Startled, Kai immediately released her, taking a step back. His face paled as he realized the scene they had just created.

Delphinia took a shaky breath before glaring at him with pure hatred. "You bastard," she hissed, her voice trembling with anger.

Without another word, she turned and stormed off, leaving Kai standing there, stunned and frozen.

And as she walked away, she didn’t look back.
