Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 240: Mother’s Place
Delphinia moved around Ashton’s room, making sure everything was packed for his weekend stay at Lydia’s place. Delphinia carefully folded the last shirt and placed it in the small backpack beside Ashton’s bed. As she did, her mind wandered back to the conversation she’d had with Lydia earlier in the week. It wasn’t a surprise when Lydia had asked if Ashton could stay at her place for the weekend.
If anything, Delphinia had anticipated it. Since the day Lydia had reentered their lives, she had been incredibly warm toward Ashton, making it clear that she wanted to spend more time with him. And Delphinia couldn’t deny that it made her happy to see her son forming a bond with his aunt.
But there had been a part of her that worried, just a little, about how Evander would react. She knew him, knew how protective he could be, and how fiercely he guarded his role as the primary parent in their household. She had half-expected a long-winded discussion about boundaries or his need to control every little aspect of their lives. The idea of him letting Ashton go for the weekend—of sharing time with Lydia without interference—had felt too good to be true.
But when she’d asked him about it, surprisingly, his response had been simple. He hadn’t argued, hadn’t raised an eyebrow. Instead, he’d looked at her, then at Ashton, and simply nodded. And Ashton also wished for the same thing.
The improvement in their relationship was something Delphinia had quietly hoped for. Things hadn’t always been easy between her and Evander, especially when it came to co-parenting, but this felt different.
She double-checked his clothes, neatly folded in the small backpack, and ensured his favorite books and toys were there. Ashton sat on the edge of his bed, swinging his legs, watching her work. He didn’t seem nervous, but Delphinia knew him well enough to see the slight hesitation in his posture.
"Are you sure you have everything, sweetheart?" Delphinia asked, zipping up the bakcpack.
Ashton nodded. "Yeah, I think so." But his voice wasn’t as confident as usual.
Delphinia sat beside him, smoothing out his slightly messy hair. "You know you can call anytime if you need anything, right?"
"I know," Ashton murmured.
Before she could say more, the bedroom door opened, and Evander stepped in. His gaze flickered between them before settling on his son. He took a seat on the other side of Ashton, his presence strong yet gentle.
"Are you really okay with this?" Evander asked, his voice calm but firm. "No one is forcing you. If you don’t want to go, you don’t have to."
Ashton glanced between his father and Delphinia before shaking his head. "I want to go."
Delphinia studied his face for any sign of doubt but saw nothing except quiet determination. "Alright then," she said with a small smile. "I’ll go downstairs and wait. You two should have some time together."
She squeezed Ashton’s hand briefly before rising to her feet and walking out of the room, leaving father and son alone.
Downstairs, the doorbell rang. Delphinia took a deep breath before opening the door, revealing Lydia standing there with a composed smile. Her hair was styled neatly, and she looked as put together as always.
"Good evening, Delphinia," Lydia greeted politely.
"Good evening, Lydia," Delphinia responded, stepping aside to let her in. "Ashton will be down soon."
Lydia nodded, her eyes briefly scanning the house before landing on Delphinia again. Then, in an almost casual tone, she asked, "So, how has he been?"
Delphinia raised a brow but kept her expression neutral. "He’s been doing well. Still doing great at school like usual."
Lydia hummed in response. "Does he still sleep with the night light on?"
"Sometimes," Delphinia answered. "Not as much as before, though. He’s been getting braver."
Lydia nodded again, as if processing the information, then asked, "And what about his eating habits? Has he been refusing vegetables again?"
Delphinia couldn’t ignore the irony of the moment. Lydia, Ashton’s biological mother, was confirming details about her own son from the woman who had been raising him. She wasn’t sure whether to feel amused or sympathetic. It wasn’t her fault that Ashton trusted Delphinia more. It was the reality Lydia had created when she had walked away all those years ago.
"He’s getting better with vegetables," Delphinia replied, choosing to keep her tone polite. "He doesn’t love them, but he eats them."
Lydia gave a tight-lipped smile. "That’s good to hear."
Before more could be said, footsteps echoed from the staircase. Delphinia turned to see Ashton descending the steps, his small backpack slung over one shoulder. Evander followed closely behind.
Lydia’s eyes softened when she saw her son. "Ready?"
Ashton nodded, walking over to her. Evander handed Lydia the backpack with no expression.
"Have fun," Delphinia said, offering Ashton a small smile. She wanted him to enjoy himself, even if part of her felt uneasy about letting him go.
Evander placed a hand on Ashton’s shoulder and squeezed lightly. "Have a great time."
Lydia took Ashton’s hand, and together, they walked towards the door. Delphinia watched as Ashton turned back one last time, offering a small wave before stepping outside. She waved back, forcing herself to push down the odd sense of melancholy settling in her chest.
As the door closed behind them, silence filled the house. She let out a quiet sigh, staring at the spot where Ashton had been just moments ago. She told herself he would be fine. He would be back soon. It was just a weekend.
But still, the house felt a little emptier.
Before she could dwell too much, she felt the familiar warmth of Evander behind her. His strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her into his embrace. She leaned into him instinctively, closing her eyes as he pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head.
"He’ll be fine," Evander murmured.
Delphinia exhaled, allowing herself to relax in his hold. "I know."
