Accidentally Yours, My Super Rich Second Husband-Chapter 25: A New Family Breakfast
Soft morning light slipped through the curtains, gently nudging her awake. Her eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, she lay still, staring at the ceiling. Memories of the last few days flooded her mind, and she sighed quietly. This is my life now, she reminded herself. Determined to start the day right, Delphinia rolled out of bed.
After a quick shower, she dressed in a simple but neat outfit—a pale blue blouse tucked into a pair of comfortable jeans. She tied her wavy auburn hair into a loose ponytail and gave herself a brief glance in the mirror. Her reflection looked more composed than she felt, but that was good enough. With a nod to herself, she left the room and headed downstairs.
Delphinia’s footsteps were light as she skipped down the stairs. The rich aroma of brewing coffee filled the house, leading her straight to the kitchen
Inside, two maids were already at work. They paused when Delphinia entered, looking surprised but quickly bowing their heads politely.
"Good morning!" Delphinia said cheerfully with a bright smile, clapping her hands together. The maids exchanged unsure glances.
"Good morning, ma’am. Do you need something?" one of them asked hesitantly.
Delphinia shook her head. "Not at all. I just thought I’d help out a little. I want to make something for my family." The words felt heavy, and she had to swallow hard after saying them. But her smile didn’t waver.
"Oh, ma’am, that’s not necessary. We can handle—"
"It’s fine, really," Delphinia insisted, cutting them off gently. She grabbed an apron hanging by the counter and tied it around her waist. "I insist. Besides, I’m not bad in the kitchen, you know."
The maids hesitated but eventually nodded, stepping aside to make space for her. Delphinia decided on a simple breakfast—scrambled eggs, toast, bacon, and some fresh fruit on the side. The maids worked alongside her, occasionally stealing curious glances at her as she moved around with surprising ease.
When the food was ready, Delphinia helped arrange everything on the dining table. She took her time ensuring each plate was neatly set, even adding a small vase with fresh flowers she found in the corner. Satisfied, she stood back and admired her work.
She perked up at the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Turning around, she saw Evander and Ashton entering the dining room together. Both paused in their tracks, noticing her near the table, smiling as if the morning couldn’t be brighter
"Good morning!" Delphinia greeted them brightly, waving her hand slightly.
Evander gave her a questioning look, and Ashton glanced up at him, clearly unsure. Leaning closer, the little boy whispered, "The weird lady is living up to her name, Dad. She’s so weird."
Evander’s lips twitched, almost as if he were suppressing a chuckle. "Let her be. She’s just like that," he murmured back.
Unaware of their hushed conversation, Delphinia gestured toward the table. "What are you two doing just standing there? Come on, let’s eat!" she said, walking over to pull out a chair for Ashton.
Ashton climbed into his seat cautiously, his wide eyes still studying her. Evander followed suit, sitting down at the head of the table. Delphinia took a seat across from Ashton, clasping her hands together as she watched them start to eat.
"Sorry I couldn’t join you for dinner last night," Delphinia said with a smile.
"It’s fine," Ashton replied simply, already digging into his scrambled eggs.
Delphinia’s gaze lingered on the little boy as he ate. Right, she thought, this new job isn’t just about being a wife—it’s about being a mother, too. She felt a sharp knot of worry settle in her chest. She hadn’t really considered what it meant to be a stepmother before. Did Ashton resent her? What if her presence triggered some kind of trauma for him?
Her mind wandered to questions she hadn’t dared to ask yet. Where was Ashton’s mother? Was she gone? Had she passed away when Ashton was born, or had something else happened? The house had no photographs of a woman who might have been Evander’s wife or Ashton’s mother. Was Evander avoiding the subject on purpose? What if—
Delphinia shook her head, hoping to push the chaotic thoughts away. She couldn’t afford to overthink this. Instead, she forced a smile and spoke up again. "I helped a little with breakfast today," she said, her tone almost too casual. "How is it?"
Evander barely glanced up, chewing a piece of bacon before replying with a simple, "It’s good."
Short, but positive. Delphinia took it as a win. She turned to Ashton, her smile widening. "And you? What do you think?"
Ashton looked up, his cheeks puffed out with food. He swallowed quickly before answering, "Not bad."
Delphinia chuckled softly. "Well, I’ll take that as a compliment."
For a moment, she watched the little boy eat, wondering what it would take to connect with him. "What grade are you in, Ashton?" she asked.
"Third," he replied without looking up.
"Oh, what a big boy you are!" Delphinia said enthusiastically.
Ashton nodded, continuing to eat with focused determination. Meanwhile, Evander ate in silence, offering no help to ease the slightly awkward atmosphere.
Delphinia glanced at him and felt a lump form in her throat. Is it always like this? she wondered. Or is it just me?
Trying to ignore her insecurities, she shifted her attention back to Ashton. "So, do you like school?" she asked, attempting to keep the conversation alive.
Ashton shrugged. "It’s okay, I guess."
Delphinia smiled gently, her heart softening at his nonchalant response. She decided not to press further, not wanting to push him too much.
The rest of the meal passed quietly. Delphinia found herself observing the two Walton men—the way Ashton’s small hands carefully gripped his fork, the way Evander’s sharp eyes occasionally flicked toward her, as if trying to figure her out.
When the meal was over, Delphinia stood up to clear the table. Ashton thanked her quietly, surprising her with his politeness. Evander, on the other hand, simply nodded before rising from his seat.
As he walked past her, he paused briefly and said, "You did well."
Delphinia blinked, startled by the unexpected compliment. A faint blush crept up her cheeks, and she managed a small, "Thank you."
Evander didn’t wait for a response, continuing on his way. Delphinia watched him go, her heart fluttering for reasons she didn’t fully understand.
"Well," she muttered to herself, "this is going to be interesting."
