Chapter 34: For Them

Morning sunlight poured through the mansion’s windows, lighting up the room as Delphinia sat cross-legged on the bed, carefully folding the last of her clothes into her suitcase. It felt like the past few days had gone by in a rush. and now it was time to head back home. She stopped for a second, her eyes wandering around the room as her mind wandered.

"Semi-successful," she mused silently. The trip had been enjoyable overall—stunning sights, good food, and those rare times when they actually laughed together—but the near-disaster at Buckingham Palace still lingered in her mind. It had been a sobering reminder of how quickly things could go wrong.

Even so, Delphinia had to admit there were some surprising upsides to being married to Evander. The salary he provided gave her a financial freedom she hadn’t experienced before, and this vacation was another unexpected gift. She smirked faintly as she folded one of her new scarves. If I play my cards right, I might actually come out of this marriage on top.

Her gaze drifted to the small pile of shopping bags by the door. She’d bought a number of things during their trip—not just for herself, but for others too. There were small gifts for Valerie, who had supported her during tough times, as well as Sienna and the other maids back at the mansion. They were hardworking and kind, and this was her small way of showing appreciation.

With her suitcase rolling behind her, Delphinia walked out of the hotel, her steps lighter than before. She glanced back at Ashton, who clutched his small backpack with sleepy eyes, and then at Evander, who walked confidently beside him. The trio made their way to the car waiting to take them to the airport.

Inside the car, Delphinia leaned her head against the window, watching the city pass by one last time. London had been breathtaking, and part of her felt reluctant to leave. Even with everything going on, she found herself missing home more than she expected.

The car ride was mostly silent, with Ashton humming now and then while Evander stared out at the city, deep in thought. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎

They arrived at the airport in no time, and Delphinia blinked as she saw the private jet waiting on the runway. Even after several trips, the sight of it still felt surreal. She followed Evander and Ashton up the stairs, her suitcase rolling behind her. Inside, the jet’s interior was as luxurious as she remembered, with plush leather seats and polished wood accents.

She sank into her seat, leaned back, and let the gentle hum of the engines calm her nerves. Ashton sat next to her, already engrossed in a small coloring book he’d brought along. Evander sat down across from them, casually scrolling through his tablet like he did it a hundred times a day.

The flight seemed to go by in no time, and before she knew it, they touched down near Evander’s estate. The massive mansion loomed at the end of the winding driveway. Delphinia felt a strange sense of comfort seeing it again, like returning to a place that, against all odds, was starting to feel familiar.

Once inside, she wasted no time unpacking. She opened her luggage and began sorting through the souvenirs she’d bought. She felt oddly content looking at the trinkets and packages they had brought back. She held up a silk scarf she’d chosen for Valerie, smiling as she imagined her friend’s reaction.

By the time she carried the gifts downstairs, Sienna and a few other maids were tidying up the living room. They looked up in surprise as Delphinia approached, her arms full of neatly wrapped parcels.

"These are for you," she said, handing each of them a small package.

The maids exchanged startled glances before accepting the gifts. Sienna, who was usually composed, looked genuinely touched. "Really? For us?" she said, barely hiding her shock.

Delphinia nodded, her smile warm. "Yes, I wanted to thank you all for everything you do. I know it’s not much, but I hope you like them."

A younger maid, her face lighting up with excitement, unwrapped her gift to find a tiny silver keychain of the London Eye. "It’s beautiful!" she exclaimed.

"Thank you so much, Mrs. Walton," another maid added, holding up her gift.

"You didn’t have to do this, Mrs. Walton," Sienna said softly, her expression betraying a rare moment of emotion. "But... thank you. It means a lot to us."

Delphinia waved her hand dismissively, though her cheeks flushed slightly. "It’s nothing, really. I just thought of you all while we were shopping. That’s it."

Evander stood quietly in the doorway, arms folded, his sharp gaze resting on Delphinia without her realizing it.

She turned slightly, catching his eye. "What?" she asked, tilting her head.

"Wait, you bought all of that just to give it away?" he said, lifting a brow in mild surprise.

Delphinia shrugged. "Why not? It’s not a bad thing, and I wanted to do something nice."

He didn’t say a word, but the hint of a smirk gave him away. Ashton peeked out from behind his father, holding a toy he’d brought back from the trip. "What about me? Did I get one too?" he said, a playful glint in his eye.

Delphinia chuckled, bending down to ruffle his hair. "You already got plenty, mister. But maybe I’ll think about it next time."

The maids walked off, chatting happily, and Delphinia couldn’t help but feel proud of herself. She turned back to her luggage, intent on finishing unpacking, but she paused when she noticed Evander still watching her.

"What?" she asked again, her voice softening.

He just shook his head, still smirking. "Nothing," he said, his eyes lingering briefly before walking off.

Delphinia frowned, confused by his look. Still, standing there with the maids’ gratitude and Ashton’s joy around her, a smile crept onto her face.

Maybe, just maybe, this marriage wasn’t such a bad deal after all.
