Chapter 63: Moments in the Park

The park stretched out before Delphinia like a serene painting, bathed in the soft glow of the late afternoon sun. The gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze harmonized with the distant laughter of children and the occasional bark of a dog. Delphinia sat on a wooden bench under the shade of an old oak tree, her hands folded neatly in her lap as she watched Ashton and Goldie a short distance away.

Goldie barked excitedly, his tail wagging furiously as Ashton threw a bright yellow ball across the grassy field. The puppy bolted after it with enthusiasm, his small legs carrying him faster than Delphinia thought possible. Ashton jumped up and down, clapping his hands.

"Go, Goldie! You got this, boy!" Ashton’s voice carried over to her, light and full of joy.

Delphinia smiled, her heart swelling at the sight. She leaned back on the bench, letting herself relax for the first time that day. Ashton’s laughter, mingling with Goldie’s barks, created a melody that soothed her lingering unease.

As Goldie returned with the ball in his mouth, Ashton crouched down, patting the puppy on the head. "Good boy! You’re so fast!" he praised, taking the ball from Goldie with zero hesitation.

Delphinia chuckled softly to herself, shaking her head. "He doesn’t even care about the mess," she murmured, her voice tinged with affection.

After a few more rounds of fetch, Ashton suddenly turned toward her, cupping his hands around his mouth like a makeshift megaphone. "Delphinia! Come play with us!"

Delphinia straightened up, her eyebrows lifting. "Me?"

"Yeah, you!" Ashton grinned, holding up the ball. "Come on, it’ll be fun!"

Goldie barked right after, like she was agreeing with him.

Delphinia hesitated for a moment, glancing down at her neat flats and the slightly damp grass. But Ashton’s eager expression melted away her reluctance. "Alright, alright," she called back, standing up and brushing off her skirt.

As she walked toward them, Ashton bounced on his toes, his excitement contagious. "Okay, Delphinia, you stand over there," he instructed, pointing to a spot a few feet away. "I’ll throw the ball, and you can try to catch it!"

"Oh, so now I’m part of the game?" Delphinia teased, her smile widening.

"Yup!" Ashton giggled.

Delphinia positioned herself where Ashton had directed, squaring her shoulders playfully. "Alright, I’m ready."

Ashton wound up dramatically, his tongue sticking out in concentration as he aimed. With a mighty throw that was more enthusiasm than accuracy, the ball flew through the air—though not quite in Delphinia’s direction. She laughed, darting to the side to catch it before it hit the ground.

"Got it!" she called, holding the ball up like a trophy.

"Woohoo!" Ashton cheered, clapping his hands.

Goldie barked and leaped up, his tail wagging so hard his entire body wiggled. Delphinia crouched down, holding the ball just out of reach. "You want it, Goldie?" she asked, her tone playful.

Goldie let out an excited yip, pawing at her hand.

"Alright, here it comes!" Delphinia stood and gave the ball a gentle toss. Goldie sprinted after it, his ears flapping in the wind.

Ashton laughed, running after the puppy. "Wait for me, Goldie!"

Delphinia watched them with a fond smile, her hands resting on her hips. She could see other families scattered around—children on swings, couples walking hand in hand, and a few other dogs chasing after frisbees.

It was a simple scene, yet it filled her with a sense of peace.

"Delphinia! Your turn again!" Ashton’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Delphinia blinked, realizing he was waving the ball at her. She jogged over, a little out of breath but grinning. "Alright, what’s the plan this time?"

Ashton handed her the ball, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "You throw it, and I’ll see if I can beat Goldie to it!"

"Oh, is that a challenge?" Delphinia raised an eyebrow, her tone teasing.

"Yup! I bet I’ll win!" Ashton said confidently.

"We’ll see about that." Delphinia held the ball up, pretending to analyze her aim. "Ready?"

"Ready!" Ashton crouched like a runner at the starting line, while Goldie stood beside him, tail wagging eagerly.

With a light flick of her wrist, Delphinia threw the ball. It sailed through the air, and both Ashton and Goldie took off at the same time.

"Go, Goldie! Go, Ashton!" Delphinia cheered, laughing as the two raced across the field.

Goldie reached the ball first, his quick paws no match for Ashton’s shorter legs. But Ashton didn’t seem to mind, laughing as he flopped onto the grass beside the puppy.

"Good job, Goldie," Ashton said between giggles, ruffling the dog’s fur.

Delphinia strolled over, her steps slow and relaxed. She crouched down beside them, brushing a strand of hair from Ashton’s forehead. "You almost had him, champ," she said with a smile.

"Maybe next time," Ashton replied, grinning up at her.

They stayed like that for a moment, the three of them together in the fading light. Delphinia couldn’t remember the last time she had felt so at ease, so connected.

Yet, as much as she tried to hold on to the moment, a nagging thought lingered at the back of her mind. Why had Evander been so insistent on them coming to the park?

It wasn’t like Evander to act so strangely. The way he had rushed into the house earlier, his unusual tension, and his insistence on getting them out of the house—it all felt...off.

Was he trying to get rid of us? The thought came unbidden, and she quickly shook her head, dismissing it.

"No," she muttered under her breath. "I’m just overthinking things."

"What’d you say, Delphinia?" Ashton asked, looking up at her with curious eyes.

Delphinia blinked, startled out of her thoughts. "Oh, nothing, sweetheart. Just talking to myself." She forced a smile, ruffling his hair again.

For now, though, she pushed the worries aside, focusing on Ashton’s laughter and Goldie’s antics fill her mind.

She figured this was one of those times you just let yourself enjoy, no questions asked.
