Chapter 184: The Colosseum (2)

Violet stood at the edge of a large circular sand arena, it was one of many that could be magically transformed by the colosseum itself. Right now their were 3 other such arenas present, each one with around 10 fighters standing around the edge of the circle.

Violet was part of the first batch of fighters called up to fight for her spot in the main tournament, she could hear the deafening roar of the crowd as they cheered for both her and the other contestants.

She once more looked around at the people that she would soon be fighting, taking note of their equipment and weapons. Luna had explained how enlightened tended to wear different equipment depending on what kind of fighters they were. Mages usually opted for robes or other light apparel that didn’t restrict movement, she spotted 2 such contestants with her. Then three others opted for heavy platemail wielding shields, these people would fight more defensively thanks to their heavy armour.

Others wore light leathers, like what Luna wore, they would likely be fast and precise. Some of them held swords others axes and even one dwarf that held what looked like an oversized log as a mace of sorts.

As for Violet, well she was wearing a cream dress with blue highlights. She saw no need to wear armour as her scales could defend her well enough, she held no weapons as her magic and claws were all that she needed. She stood in a relaxed pose, limbs loose and ready to spring into motion at a moments notice.

Her musings was interrupted when a voice echoed out, likely magically amplified to be heard over the enthusiast crowd.

"Welcome ladies and gentlemen, citizens of Cragkieth and guests from afar! We welcome you to our illustrious Colosseum!" The crowd redoubled their cheering, the sound enough to make Violet wince slightly at the volume.

It soon died down enough for the voice to continue. "We have here some of the finest Lords this region has to offer, fighting for glory and the chance of entering the tournament bracket!"

"The last 2 contestants standing in each of the battles will be guaranteed a spot! Now, let the battles commence!" The crowd once more erupted in hoots, yells and cheers as the battle officially began.

Violet did not hesitate, she summoned 2 void spears and shot them off at the two fighter standing on either side of her. Not wanting to get pincers from multiple sides.

However, the fighters seemed to be ready for her attack. The one to her left, a nimble catkin of some kind fluidly avoided the incoming projectile with a quick dash forwards, before he pivoted on his feet and dashed to the side away from Violet heading towards another opponent.

The man to her right, who was in heavy plate simply hefted his shield up. A layer of brown mana condensing on top of the shield as he swung it into the spears path. Violets eyes opened slightly wider in excitement as she saw her spear be deflected and sent flying in the direction of a different contestant who scrambled to get out of the way.

The armoured man turned to face Violet, his face completely hidden behind his helmet. He proceeded to make his way towards Violet at a steady jog, his shield held out before him and a sword held on guard to his side.

Violet grinned at the approaching warrior, eager to test his abilities. Yet she was forced to take a hasty step backwards as she dodged an incoming stone projectile aiming for her head. She noted that the mage Africa from her had sent out a burst of stone bullets at several fighters, one of whom didn’t see it comming and ended up having it blow a small chunk out of their arm.

Turning back to face the oncoming warrior Violet summoned her barrage of void bolts, a dozen of them circling her head. The warrior did not slow, simply reinforcing his shield with more mana.

She sent forth her barrage, already summoning a second one before the first had even been fully launched. She did make sure to send 3 of the bolts towards the mage who tried to attack her however, unwilling to not return the favour.

The warrior grunted as he took the barrage, small chunks of his mana protection being errased wherever her bolts struck, only to be quickly filled back in as he pumped more mana into his defence. She then began to intersperse spears into her barrage, unwilling to allow him to get any closer without working for it.

The warrior held his stance, steadily advancing as he seemingly shrugged off everything that she could throw at him. His shield acting as his indomitable defence, or so he thought.

Violet overcharged one spear in particular, causing its length to extend untill it better resembled her old lance skill. When the spear was unable to hold any more mana she unleashed it. The warrior, assured in his defences saw the incoming attack he failed to anticipate its deadly power.

He simply handled his shield slightly, intending to deflect it as he did the rest of the spears she had sent his way. Yet when the spear landed on his shield it did not get reflected, it punched straight through the mana barrier, straight through his shield, straight through the arm that held the shield before finally coming to a stop after punching through his armour and an inch of his body.

Violet saw his eyes open wide behind his helm for a fraction of a second, before her spear exploded.

The explosion should have killed him, yet a golden batter briefly enveloped the man before he was proptly teleported away to be healed.

Violet was then pleasantly surprised when she received a system notification.

[You have defeated Ragnar Ironhand, Stone Dwarf lvl 93 exp rewarded]

A grin split violets face as she realised that she could actually gain experience from fighting here! She didn’t think that would be possible seeing as she would be unable to kill anyone, but it seemed the system didn’t care if they died so long as they had been defeated.

She quickly turned to observe the rest of her group, noting that 4 people had fallen so far, the mage. Her eyes locked into the stone mage across from her, a halo of stone shards orbited his head, low stone walls encircled him, sections quickly rising and falling to block incoming projectiles.

’He will be next!’ She thought, before sending forth her barrage of bolts and spears. The mage reacted quickly, reinforcing his defences and returning fire with several stone shards.

Violet summoned her void shield to block the incoming blows, watching in interest as her atta is impacted his barriers. And impact they did, the bolts erased chunks of the wall, the spears punching through nearly half way befor being stuck. Yet the explosions when they stopped still sent the mage stagger back, promptly falling over his low wall and landing on his butt.

Violet was about to target him but suddenly felt a chill run down her spine, she quickly turned around, mana reinforcing her fist as she ducked under the slash of a dagger aimed for her neck. Her fist shot forward, landing in the abdomen of the rogue that had appeared behind her without notice.

The woman let out a gasp as the wind was knocked out of her, yet she recovered quickly. A knife flew out of her hand aimed for Violet’s head this time, only to be blocked as a void shield flickered into place.

Then the rogue was forced to dance away as Violet unleashed her barrage, yet the woman was not fast enough. Soon receiving a bolt to her left knee, when half her kneecap was erased in the small explosion she screamed in pain and fell to the floor. Violet did not let this chance go this time and a spear flew down ready to impale her bowed head.

Right as it struck the back of her skull she was enveloped in that now familiar golden glow, a moment before she was teleported away.

Returning her focus to the battlefield she was surprised to note that only 3 contestants remained standing now. The members having rapidly fallen under the wild barrage of spells and attacks of the other contestants.

To one side stood a lithe man in leathers, holding a sword in one hand and a buckler in the other. His sharp gaze flickered between Violet and the last foe. A figure clad in heavy plate once more, all features obscured behind the black metal, a shield in one hand and a vicious looking spiked mace in the other. The figure was at least identifiable as a dwarf given their short stature, but no other features were visible.

The three remaining fighters stood their ground, observing each other, searching for a weakness to exploit.

Violet began to summon her barrage, dozens of void bolts now swirling around her head. Then she shot them all forth at the armoured person, the swordsman noticed that as he suddenly shot forth towards aiming for the armoured dwarf.

Only he did not reach the dwarf as a condensed beam of void promptly lanced into his head, held back by the golden glow of the arena before he was teleported away. Leaving Violet and the armoured dwarf as the last two standing.
