Adventures of the last Wild Dragon-Chapter 225: Eclipse
When the myriad figures appeared the girls were instantly on high alert, so when they all moved as one to charge them the girls were ready.
A wave of ranged attacks were launched, bolts, spears, water jets, lightning bolts and seed bullets all flew out. Yet when the figures were hit by these attacks the results were slightly perplexing.
Gaping holes appeared in the figures bodies wherever an attack landed, yet to the girls surprise these holes began to quickly close up, all the while the figures closed in.
Violet suddenly had a realisation as she watched this, remembering similar occurrences of this happening before shouted out to her companions. "I think these are elementals, we just need to keep hitting them!"
And so they did, Olivia moved up slightly drawing the attention of those closest to her, her shield already encased in thorny vines and glowing emerald from her mana reinforcing it. She slammed her shield forward into one foe, its entire body splattering into puddles of liquid that instantly began to corrode everything it touched.
"They are acidic!" Olivia shouted, her usual nervousness evaporating in the heat of battle.
And it was a powerful acid too, the vines on her shield withering away in real time as the elementals fluids coated them. Still her mana enabled new vines to grow in to replace what was lost.
Rhyana upon hearing this news was at quite a loss for as to what she could do. She primarily fought using her body itself, yet she would only injure herself if she were to strike these opponents. As if sensing her unease Susan quickly called out to her. "Just use your magic, let the others fight up close."
Rhyana was reluctantly forced to accept that, relying only on physical force if she was left no alternative.
Luna was having arguabley the easiest time dealing with these elementals, as they were a liquid she could truly counter them with her own ice powers. A wave of frigid cold emanated from her, when she struck at the nearest elemental with her sword instead of cutting through it like a liquid, she weapon froze the body of the monster and it instead shattered away in frozen shards.
She moved like a disaster, everywhere she went chunks of frozen acid would soon be sent flying, the elementals unable to do anything against her other then simply overwhelmed her with shear numbers. Unfortunately for the girls, shear numbers was something that these elementals had in abundance.
Violet was like an artillery, chunks of acid elemental would be erased wherever she focused her assult. She focused on holding back any that came from the areas that the two frontlines could not reach. With Luna taking up an entire area in her ever expanding arctic domain and Olivia standing stalwart in a different point protecting Susan and Rhyana.
Violet stood between them all, blocking all who would try to approach the two companions from behind. All the while she was having a part of her mind focus on forming as many void runes as she could.
All around her runes were slowly being etched into the ground, at first only a couple were being formed. Yet she could feel her skill resonate with her desire, new information being made available to her thanks to the system.
This allowed her to pour more of her attention into drawing runes, her usual routine of bolts and spears not taking too much of her concentration.
When the first rune was complete it flashed purple for but a moment, then seconds later one of the elementals moved over it and the rune activated.
A thin sheet of void suddenly shot upwards, slicing the creature in two and causing its form to collapse. Yet the sheet of void remained in place, as more and more of her runes came into fruition more and more of these void sheets sprouted from the ground.
She focused on blocking off particular angles of approach, creating a shield that the girls could use to funnel in the elementals. Still this was a slow process and despite her impressive mind, the skill was simply too low level for her to enact such a defence in short order.
Still these void sheets did help the girls, enabling Rhyana and Susan to focus their attacks somewhat and allow them some greater ease in what they could do.
Yet despite this, more and more elementals appeared. Over the nearby hills an endless stream of them surged, for every one that the girls managed to kill 2 more would soon move in to take their place.
The only saving grace was their lack of speed and that they could seemingly only attack with physical blows. Even with that handicap the numbers were not on their side.
Soon Rhyana was forced to abandon using only her magic, forced to coat her arms in powerful electricity to punch elementals that had gotten too close. Whilst her punches did devastating damage to the elementals, each foe nearly collapsing in on itself from a single attack, she did not get away unscathed.
When the monsters exploded from the powerful electricity, they would inevitably explode. In the process puddles of acid would land in and around her, even her scales that covered her arms were unable to entirely block the powerful corrosive effects.
Thankfully for her, Susan was able to heal away the damage being dealt. All the while she was releasing her bubbles in ever increasing numbers. The constant popping signaling the effectiveness of her control.
Susan sent some into the Arctic domain under Luna’s control, yet the leopard was seemingly fine dealing with the elementals by herself with only the occasion bolt or spear being sent by Violet.
So instead Susan focused on aiding Violet’s attempts at controlling the battlefield with impediments for the elementals to move through. She concentrated her bubbles into spots that would funnel the elementals into narrow passages that Olivia and Rhyana could more easily manage.
All the while more and more of Violet’s void sheets kept appearing, some of the elementals tried to break them down yet despite being so thin they were surprisingly sturdy. Strong enough that the elementals were happy to chose the path of least resistance and be funnelled into easy to target points.
Yet whilst the girls fought desperately to maintain an equilibrium in this battle, the tides were slowly but surely turning against them. Their was simply too many elementals appearing, they were unable to effectively fight them with only Luna being able to truly counter the monsters effectively without being hurt herself.
Soon things would have to change, Violet knew that and so she acted. As soon as she was happy with what scant defenses she had created she focused entirely on offense.
She stopped creating runes for control and shifted to the simpler tunes that could forge spears to shoot out of the ground. Yet she allowed her mind to focus primarily on unleashing her magical barrage.
Void bolts appeared by the dozen, every second a new batch would appear. Spears quickly formed, lancing through multiple foes at once, when exploding the creatures would collapse in on themselves, unable to deal with the sudden and aggressive damage.
Thin beams of void would slice through the battlefield, cutting elementals in half and thinning them out, even if only for a moment. She let out a roar of challenge, imbuing her allies with renewed strength and momentarily halting the approaching monsters advance.
Luna on her side of the battlefield was standing amidst the frozen remains of countless elementals, their remains piling up in a macabre palisade upon which she defended against the ever increasing hord.
"We cannt keep this up forever!" Shouted Susan, she was rapidly burning through her mana reserves as she was forced to constantly heal both Rhyana and Olivia from acid burns, whilst maintaining her field of bubbles.
Violet growled as she too had realised this, the odds were not in their favour anymore. Even when each individual elemental was no true threat to the girls the shear number of foes was truly daunting.
She was beginning to contemplate shifting back into her dragon form when she noticed that the world was beginning to look less green. She chanced a brief glance up to the sky and saw that the moon was slowly passing by the sun, hints of the suns golden rays piercing through the sickly green shade cast by the moon.
As she noted that she also saw that no new elementals were forming, whilst the number was still overwhelming, they were no longer being replaced. "The eclipse is almost over, no new elementals are appearing. Just hold on and we win!" Announced Luna having also realised that fact alongside Violet.
And so the girls held on. Burning through their mana reserves with alacrity.
Elementals came, yet they died just as soon as they showed up.
Eventually the green tint of the world shifted entirely back to the blue skies and golden rays, when the sun was completely free of the moon all remaining elementals simply collapsed into puddles that quickly faded away.
The Eclipse was over.
