After Betrayal - I Married a Handsome Tycoon-Chapter 160: Friction on the Edge of Exposure
How pitiful.
In her thirty years of life, this was the first time Moira Sloan had seen that word so perfectly personified in a man.
When she thought about Connor Quinn’s family situation, her heart completely melted.
Just a moment ago, she’d been at daggers drawn with Shane Jennings, but now she was overflowing with pity.
Meanwhile, Shane Jennings took the elevator downstairs and stumbled out of the hotel.
He was making his way to the parking lot with unsteady steps when a cool, detached figure suddenly blocked his path.
It was Cassie Blanchett.
Cassie’s expression was indifferent, betraying no emotion.
Seeing him come out of the hotel, she didn’t question him or say anything unnecessary. She simply stepped forward and held out a divorce agreement to him.
Shane Jennings froze.
Cassie said, "You didn’t sign the divorce agreement I sent to The Jennings Group. The one delivered to the Jennings Family estate was also returned. So, I had to make the trip myself."
Shane Jennings’s mind had been a mess, but at this moment, he grew surprisingly calm.
"I’m not signing it."
Cassie replied coolly, "That’s fine. I can sue for divorce."
Hearing her words, Shane Jennings’s pupils contracted. "You want a divorce? Does the Blanchett Family know?"
Cassie said, "It’s my marriage that has a problem. I want a divorce. I don’t need to inform anyone in the Blanchett Family."
Cassie was acting far too calmly. Seeing this, Shane Jennings grew agitated and yanked at the tie around his neck. "A divorce in a normal family doesn’t require notifying anyone, of course," he said in a low voice, "but ours is a marriage alliance. Don’t you understand that we sink or swim together? Cassie, you..."
Shane Jennings argued vehemently, but Cassie cut him off indifferently. "Being married to you has only been a liability for me." 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
Shane Jennings’s hand, still tugging at his tie, froze.
Cassie continued, "The kind of partner I need in a marriage alliance is someone who can fight alongside me. Even if they can’t fight alongside me, they can’t drag me down. Since we got married, there hasn’t been a single new joint venture. Instead, I’ve had to waste extra energy helping you deal with your various scandals. Shane Jennings, a marriage alliance like this isn’t a good deal for me."
Shane Jennings was speechless.
Seeing he had no reaction, Cassie withdrew the divorce agreement. "I’ll have my lawyer contact you."
With that, Cassie turned and left without a backward glance.
Shane Jennings remained standing in place, stunned, long after Cassie had gotten into her car.
At that moment, Moira Sloan was leaning against Connor Quinn, playing a tile-matching game on her phone.
They had ordered takeout, but it hadn’t arrived yet.
Moira played distractedly. Once her wave of sympathy subsided, she thought about the message Flora Rhodes had sent earlier and the words Shane Jennings had spoken in the hallway. She belatedly found herself looking at Connor Quinn with a new sense of suspicion.
’What Flora Rhodes said might have been a misunderstanding.’
’What Shane Jennings said might have been a lie meant to sow discord.’
’But when I put their words together, the whole situation feels different.’
As she mulled it over, Moira Sloan’s eyes narrowed. "Connor Quinn, why did you suddenly show up in Atheria? Weren’t you at your friend’s place?"
Moira lifted her gaze to look at Connor Quinn. Her eyes were sultry, but they were clearly filled with scrutiny.
Connor lowered his gaze to meet hers. As they looked at each other, he said, "I missed you."
Moira raised an eyebrow. "Hm?"
Connor’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and his voice was low and deep as he said, "I missed you, so I came."
His expression was completely serious, leaving no room for doubt.
Moira stared at him intently but saw nothing unusual. She suddenly broke into a smile. "You missed me that much?"
Connor hummed in agreement. "Mhm."
’Sweet nothings are always the most beautiful things to hear.’
’Even if they’re lies.’
Moira couldn’t tell if Connor Quinn was trying to evade the subject or something else, but one thing was certain: he really did miss her.
It wasn’t that she was overconfident; it was just that it’s hard for someone to hide it when they like another person.
It was just like the old saying goes: even if you cover your mouth, love will still shine through your eyes...
As the topic came to a close, Moira put down her phone and sat up straight. She wrapped herself around Connor Quinn, settling onto his lap and hooking her long, slender legs around his waist. Leaning in to peck his lips, her eyes curved with a flirtatious smile. "Do you know what Shane Jennings said to me outside just now?"
Connor’s large hand supported her hip. "What?"
Moira said, "He said that my breakup with him was a trap you set."
Connor’s voice was husky. "Do you believe him?"
Moira gave a playful smile and, instead of answering, asked back, "Did you do it?"
