Chapter 87: Chapter 87: Entering the Inner Chamber

The message was from Lillian Kidd.

Moira Sloan glanced at it but didn’t reply immediately.

To be honest, she didn’t have a very good impression of her Eldest Senior Brother, whom she’d only ever heard about but never actually met.

’A man who didn’t even show up for Kain Alden’s funeral... he’s going to step up now and clear my name?’ 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Still, Moira didn’t want to slight Lillian Kidd, so she decided to reply later.

Right before bed, for instance.

"Mrs. Kidd, can we do it in a little while? The shop has been a bit busy lately."

The message was sent at 11:54 PM.

Lillian Kidd would be asleep by then, so naturally, there was no reply.

Moira Sloan put down her phone, rolled over onto her side, and went to sleep.

「The next day.」

Moira Sloan woke up at seven. The moment she opened her eyes, she saw Lillian Kidd’s reply: "The sooner, the better. You don’t want to wait on something like this."

Moira understood what she meant. "I know, Mrs. Kidd."

’When you’ve been framed, it’s true that the sooner you can clear things up, the better.’

’Otherwise, with time, people’s assumptions become entrenched. Even if you’re proven innocent, they’ll still harbor doubts.’

’But some things were just helpless like that. Even when you knew the best course of action, reality would throw up countless obstacles to stop you.’

Moira Sloan got out of bed as usual. Her long hair was a mess, and one strap of her nightgown had slipped off her shoulder, giving her an utterly languid look.

Having just woken up, she had completely forgotten that her home had a new tenant.

It wasn’t until she opened her bedroom door and the aroma of cooking food hit her, awakening her senses, that it finally dawned on her.

’Oh, right. The spare bedroom next to mine was rented out last night.’

She subconsciously glanced toward the kitchen and saw Connor Quinn making egg pancakes. He had a neat buzz cut, was wearing a pair of black shorts, and was... shirtless...

’It’s only human nature to appreciate a beautiful sight.’

And Moira Sloan was no exception.

She just stood there, casually staring at Connor Quinn’s back.

’Broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and refined, smooth muscle definition.’

’Honestly, he was quite easy on the eyes.’

But her appreciation didn’t last long.

Because Connor Quinn turned around.

Her admiration interrupted, Moira frowned almost imperceptibly and headed for the bathroom.

By the time Moira came out again, Connor was fully dressed—he’d even changed from shorts into a pair of long pants.

Moira glanced over, a faint, knowing smile on her face.

"Connor Quinn."

Connor put down his glass of milk. His voice was low and deep. "What is it?"

Moira teased, "On your guard against me?"

Connor looked up, his expression unruffled. "What?"

Connor’s face was so serious that as Moira gave a slight, playful lift of her eyes, she suddenly felt as if she were flirting with him.

After a few seconds, Moira composed herself and said seriously, "It’s nothing."

’They had just established an invisible boundary between them. It shouldn’t be crossed again.’

After breakfast, Connor drove toward his shop, taking a detour to drop Moira off at the hospital.

As she was about to get out of the car, Connor told her, "I’ll pick you up this afternoon."

Moira turned back, a smile playing on her lips. "Ten dollars?"

’She didn’t dare get a ride that wasn’t a clear-cut transaction.’

"I’m coming to see Jade Quinn," Connor said. "It’s on my way."

"Oh," Moira said.

’Now it really was on his way. He would be heading home after seeing Jade and could drop her off.’

Moira couldn’t find a reason to refuse, so the matter was settled by default.

A few minutes later, Moira entered the hospital room. Jean Hale and Jade Quinn were both taking their medicine.

Moira had brought them breakfast. After they finished eating, she cleared away the containers, then sat down in front of Jade Quinn and pulled an eyelash curler and a tube of mascara from her bag.

She had meant to give them to her yesterday, but with one thing and another, she’d forgotten.

Seeing the items, Jade Quinn’s eyes lit up, but she grew a little shy. "I don’t know how."

Moira’s eyes crinkled into a smile that was both charming and gentle. "It’s easy. I’ll teach you."

Meanwhile, after driving for a while, Connor Quinn received a phone call.

He answered the call. The person on the other end spoke respectfully, "Mr. Quinn, there’s a competition here in Atheria in a couple of days. We’d like to invite you to be a judge, if you’re available."

Connor’s voice was cold and stern. "I’m not available."

The man on the other end gave a placating laugh. "The payment is negotiable. The organizers said that as long as you’re willing to come, they’ll..."

"I don’t need the money," Connor said.

The man was left flustered by the blunt rejection. "Right, but..."

Connor cut him off coldly. "I’m busy. Goodbye."

After hanging up, Connor immediately dialed another number. When the call connected, he asked in a low voice, "How’s the investigation into our Master’s affairs going?"
