Chapter 370: Chapter 13: Tender Trap (Part 13)

She didn’t need Xie Zhang to say he loved her in person; knowing was enough for her to feel content. For many people, that is all they seek in their entire lives...

The next day, Xie Zhang personally took An Jiayi to the company.

The young master was rarely considerate, asking warmly about her well-being during the ride and talking a lot.

An Jiayi, however, was distracted. She replied with a few "Mm-hms," but her gaze was fixed outside the window.

Xie Zhang frowned and asked softly, "What’s wrong? Are you not feeling well?"

"The medicine still has side effects." An Jiayi paused, then explained, "My stomach hurts a bit."

Xie Zhang pulled An Jiayi’s arm, forcing her to turn and face him, and only then did he see her pale and frail face.

He couldn’t help but be shocked, and his tone became urgent and harsh: "If you are feeling unwell, why didn’t you say anything!"

"I have classes today," An Jiayi said. "I didn’t go last time, and I can’t be late today!"

"Which is more important, your class or your health? An Jiayi, can’t you prioritize!" Xie Zhang’s expression darkened, and he impatiently ordered, "Driver! Go to the hospital immediately!"

From the front seat, the driver saw Young Master Xie’s stern face in the rear-view mirror and didn’t dare hesitate, quickly steering the wheel.

"No need!" An Jiayi saw that Xie Zhang was serious, and she quickly became anxious. "I don’t want to go to the hospital!"

"You are unwell!"

"It’s just a normal side effect!" An Jiayi took a deep breath and added slowly, "Xie Zhang, I can take painkillers. It will work soon, and I can’t miss my class!"

"If you really want to attend this class, I can ask the teacher to come to the house to teach!" Xie Zhang softened his tone, patiently persuading, "How about that? I’ll have the teacher come over, and we can concentrate on the lesson at home, okay?"

An Jiayi looked at Xie Zhang. She knew he had compromised, and persisting further wouldn’t lead to a good outcome.

An Jiayi resigned herself to fate and closed her eyes, giving up the argument.

Seeing her this way, Xie Zhang gently embraced her and said, "Why didn’t you just listen like this before? I shouldn’t have taken you out today."

His natural caring gestures were like a stone thrown into An Jiayi’s heart.

Though it shouldn’t be, ripples still emanated.

Inside the hospital, the doctor prescribed medication for An Jiayi, just as she had said, nothing serious.

Xie Zhang received a call from Xie Quan and stepped aside into the corridor.

When An Jiayi left the doctor’s office, heading towards Xie Zhang, she saw a frail-looking Jiang Yan.

Their eyes met, both startled.

Jiang Yan approached An Jiayi first, her complexion as frostbitten, and her voice weak, "Aren’t you supposed to be at Xie Zhang’s house enjoying his care? Why are you at the hospital?"

An Jiayi ignored Jiang Yan’s sarcasm, examining her and asking softly, "What’s wrong with you?"

"Can’t you tell I’m unwell?" Jiang Yan paused, her expression suddenly fierce, teeth clenched as she said, "Or are you pretending to ask, just here to enjoy seeing me in misery?"

An Jiayi inevitably frowned, explaining, "I’m just concerned about you."

"Do you need to be? Wasn’t it Xie Zhang who made Wang Shao punish me to stand up for you? An Jiayi, I’ve never been forced to drink so much as last night. Those people wanted to drink me under the table!"

Watching Jiang Yan’s fierce and angry face, An Jiayi said unsurely, "You mean, Xie Zhang instigated this?"

"What are you pretending for? Don’t you know?" Jiang Yan’s sarcasm intensified, "An Jiayi, you know everything, don’t you?"

She had already convinced herself that all of this was instigated by An Jiayi, so now, no matter what An Jiayi said, for Jiang Yan, it was just an excuse.

"I don’t know anything." An Jiayi’s frown deepened; she attempted a calm demeanor, and slowly spoke, "I understand you’re upset, I won’t bother you anymore, just take a good rest!"

After saying that, she turned to leave.

Jiang Yan stood there, watching An Jiayi walk away; her hands clenched into fists, then suddenly she called out to her loudly, "An Jiayi! Don’t be too proud, you might be favored by Xie Zhang now, but the day he grows tired of you, your fate will be worse than mine!"

Every word was meant to wound, but An Jiayi had already considered these possible outcomes: if they really came to pass, it would just be the consequence she sought.

She had nothing to complain about and did not want to engage in further entanglement with Jiang Yan.

An Jiayi paused her steps, she didn’t even turn to look at Jiang Yan, but instead just walked away directly.

Jiang Yan felt a chill spreading from her lungs, her face pale and her teeth shivering, unable to utter a word.

It wasn’t until An Jiayi’s figure disappeared from her sight that she suddenly relaxed, squatting on the ground, silently crying.

Hating herself for being so laughably pathetic, she was powerless in the face of authority, abject like a dog.

Never before, like last night, did Jiang Yan truly realize that she was nothing more than a side dish for those in power.

No matter how bright and beautiful, in yesterday’s event, not one person regarded her as a human being.

Up to now, the only person who had shown concern for her was An Jiayi, whom she looked down upon.

For Jiang Yan, this was the ultimate humiliation.

Her tears surged, her lips tightly pressed, her body shaking...

An Jiayi walked to the end of the corridor, still in a daze.

She saw Xie Zhang hang up the phone and walk toward her.

The man’s demeanor was outstanding; even his few steps carried a powerful aura.

He stood before her, looking down, his voice faint, "What’s wrong? You look so pale, what did the doctor say?"

An Jiayi handed over the medication she got to Xie Zhang, then, without saying a word, headed towards the outside of the hospital.

Xie Zhang, puzzled, followed An Jiayi, both of them silent along the way.

The car traveled along a quiet and peaceful suburban road, the sunlight outside the window just right.

An Jiayi felt a bit cold, she spoke softly, "I just saw Jiang Yan."

Xie Zhang’s face showed no surprise; he touched An Jiayi’s hair, his tone composed, "Hmm, she didn’t do anything to you, did she?"

"Why did you let those people humiliate Jiang Yan?" An Jiayi looked up at Xie Zhang, her eyes clear and direct, "Don’t tell me it’s because of me, you’re not someone who acts impulsively out of emotion."

Xie Zhang really didn’t understand how An Jiayi could state her bias against him so righteously.

The man sneered slowly in response, asking, "Then what kind of person am I?"

An Jiayi remained silent.

Xie Zhang’s sneer paused, he said, "Right, it wasn’t because of you. Jiang Yan dared to follow me, she should pay the price. I hate it most when people try to be clever right under my nose."
