After Breaking Up, I Married the Dying Tycoon in a Flash-Chapter 394 - 15: The Long River of Dim Lights (Part 15)
Song Nian had always understood that oftentimes, silence is the best response.
Lu Zhonian’s silence meant that Jiang Ci’s words held even stronger persuasive power.
Song Nian inhaled the cool woodsy scent of his body, closed her eyes, and didn’t wish to deceive herself anymore: "Lu Zhonian, I can accept anything. I am brave, much calmer than you imagine. I can accept the truth."
Lu Zhonian could hardly restrain himself, embracing Song Nian even tighter, closing his eyes with a hoarse voice, "Nian Nian, none of these matters. Having you by my side is what’s truly important to me."
Song Nian thought that Lu Zhonian did love her, at least, much more than she had realized.
So Song Nian said, "Lu Zhonian, I don’t want to go for a check-up anymore."
Lu Zhonian’s anxiety eased, thinking Song Nian had come to terms with it, and hastily nodded, "Alright... We won’t do it, won’t do it..."
But Song Nian slowly opened her eyes, her gaze hollow. Many emotions were concealed and suppressed, inscrutable.
It seemed as if the matter left no trace, without any follow-up.
Song Nian also seemed to have stopped caring about it. She no longer mentioned it and appeared even more cheerful than before.
Lu Zhonian didn’t know that sometimes when a person really plans to leave, there are no traces or signs.
Song Nian had already been planning a departure with no return, unbeknownst to Lu Zhonian.
Another Lunar New Year’s Eve, Song Nian accompanied Lu Zhonian back to the Lu Family for the New Year’s dinner.
All the elders of the Lu Family were present. Many years ago, Lu Zhonian’s parents had settled abroad, hence those sitting at the dinner were closely related to Lu Zhonian by interests and blood ties.
Song Nian wore a simple and elegant cheongsam, her demeanor much more composed than before. In such an environment, she was gracefully at ease, beyond reproach.
"It’s been almost two years since Zhonian and Nian Nian got married, right?" The speaker was a Lu Family elder, Lu Mingfang, his gaze resting on Song Nian for a moment, then discreetly moving away to Lu Zhonian, "Are you planning to have children?"
Lu Zhonian was serving food to Song Nian and responded with a mild smile, "Not at the moment, Nian Nian is still young."
"Hmph." Lu Mingfang scoffed coldly, his words pointed and slightly mocking, "Is it really that you don’t plan to for now, or because Song Nian simply cannot get pregnant?"
The accusatory tone of his words was too strong, and for a moment, the entire hall fell silent.
Everyone’s gaze, as if by agreement, turned to Song Nian.
Song Nian was eating the matsutake that Lu Zhonian had served her, while he was arranging her hair.
At the table, the man who had been composed now had a chill in his eyes, his voice icy, "My wife’s health is none of your business to question. Uncle, the Lu Family has not been stingy with you these past years. I advise you to stop while you’re ahead. Overreaching can lead to a fall."
Lu Mingfang’s scoff turned into a mocking laugh. He looked over Lu Zhonian’s domineering façade and said each word with arrogance, "Do you think I want to meddle in your messy affairs? If your father hadn’t contacted me multiple times, hadn’t pulled Song Nian’s medical records from abroad, do you think I’d even know? Lu Zhonian, you may have the final say in the Lu Family, but that doesn’t mean we elders don’t have the right to care."
Over the years, Lu Zhonian had held a high position and wielded power, and was no longer accustomed to being publicly questioned like this.
Now, during the New Year, he was truly experiencing it.
Lu Zhonian also attempted to rise and speak with a faint smile on his lips, but Song Nian held him back.
Lu Zhonian turned to her, surprised, and whispered, "Nian Nian, don’t worry about it, I’ll handle this..."
"Don’t," Song Nian smiled, looking up at him with a tender expression, "I’ve lied to you, Uncle is telling the truth. I’ve been keeping my health condition from you all these years, it’s my fault. Zhonian, I’m sorry."
The shock in Lu Zhonian’s eyes intensified.
Song Nian acted as if she hadn’t seen it and continued on her own, "All these years, you’ve put so much effort into caring for me, loving me, indulging me, and yet I’ve been hiding this from you. I was wrong, Zhonian, I’m sorry."
Lu Zhonian’s eyes visibly trembled as he looked at Song Nian, puzzled by her sudden full admission of guilt.
But Song Nian had already turned to face everyone else, smiling as she stood up and said, "Indeed, I am a liar, and everyone is right. I’m not suitable for the role of Mrs. Lu."
Lu Mingfang did not expect that Song Nian would be the one to shoulder everything in the end.
He was at a loss for how to react and could only say stiffly, "As long as you’re aware of your own conscience. Since that’s the case, don’t hold Zhonian back!"
Song Nian replied with a smile, agreeing that Uncle’s admonishment was correct, and said that after the New Year, she would divorce him.
The anger that had lingered at the corner of Lu Zhonian’s eyes could no longer be controlled, and in that moment, he suddenly stood up, violently flipping the feast-laden table in front of him. Caught unprepared, several elders were splashed all over.
Amidst the mess and disorderly noise, someone shouted angrily, "Zhonian! What are you doing!"
"On New Year’s Eve, who are you showing off by smashing dishes and bowls!"
Lu Zhonian just gripped Song Nian’s hand tightly, his smile tinged with malice and his expression ferocious, his voice as cold as ice, "I’m about to get a divorce, and you still want to have a New Year’s Eve dinner? Forget it, none of you will have a good time!"
Song Nian looked at his enraged face, a face she hadn’t seen for many years.
Lu Zhonian no longer wished to waste words with anyone, and he dragged Song Nian with the intention of leaving.
"Lu Zhonian! Your parents are very dissatisfied with your marriage to Song Nian, and now you make such a scene, have you considered their feelings?" Lu Mingfang urged desperately, "Come back, finish your meal!" 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
The disdain in Lu Zhonian’s eyes deepened, he turned his face emotionlessly, his cold gaze undisturbed, "Pick up the food and eat it slowly. I’ll say one last time, I will not divorce her. If anyone dares to mention this again, from now on, get out of the Lu Family!"
Something seemed to be stuck in Song Nian’s throat, making it difficult for her to catch her breath. She just looked at Lu Zhonian’s profile, the sourness in her eyes growing more intense.
It was only after being pulled upstairs and pressed behind the firmly closed door that she finally spoke softly, "Calm down first."
"How do you expect me to calm down? You want a divorce, don’t you?" Lu Zhonian laughed, his eyes reddening as he looked at Song Nian, almost obsessively, "I’m telling you, don’t even think about it."
"Lu Zhonian, I love you," Song Nian suddenly said without warning, smiling.
Lu Zhonian thought he had heard wrong, he stared at her astonished, and whispered, "What are you saying?"
"I said I love you, very much so," Song Nian raised her hand, regardless of the pain in her shoulders from being pressed by Lu Zhonian, and whispered tenderly, "Every day that I’ve been married to you has been worthwhile."
