Chapter 127: Why can’t it be me?

Sal stepped forward and blocked Nina’s path.

"Where exactly do you think you’re taking Nina alone?"

Aside from Odian—whom Nina had already accepted—he had no intention of letting any other male take her away by themselves.

The other males wore similarly disapproving expressions.

Yanai remained calm. "You can follow if you want," he said. "Just keep your distance and don’t interrupt us."

Then he turned to Nina, a trace of pleading in his eyes.

"Nina... could you come with me for a moment? It won’t take long."

"...Alright," Nina agreed.

Yanai had helped her a great deal along the journey. She no longer distrusted him the way she once had.

"Then I’ll go with you," Sal said immediately.

Odian stepped forward instead. "I should be the one to go. Your leg is injured—you should stay at the stone house and watch the cubs."

Nina nodded. "Odian’s right. Sal, stay and look after the cubs. We’ll be back soon."

Sal frowned but finally relented. "Fine. I’ll wait here."

Yanai shifted into his beast form—a massive snow wolf.

"Nina," he said softly, "let me carry you there."

Nina bit her lip lightly before climbing onto the wolf’s broad back.

Yanai took off at a run, racing toward the glowing horizon where the sun was slowly sinking. Odian followed behind at a steady distance.

After a while, Yanai slowed and brought Nina to a stop in the middle of a vast sea of flowers.

The setting sun scattered molten gold across the petals, turning the colorful meadow into a living painting. When the wind stirred, the flowers swayed like rippling waves of light. Their fragrance drifted through the evening air, mingling with the rosy clouds stretching across the sky.

Yanai carried Nina to the heart of the flower field before finally lowering her gently to the ground.

"Nina... do you like these flowers?"

Hope flickered in his eyes.

"I..." Nina hesitated. She had already guessed what he was about to say. After a moment, she nodded softly. "Yes. I like them."

The sea of blossoms was undeniably beautiful.

But she already knew she would have to disappoint him.

Yanai exhaled quietly in relief at her answer. For a moment, he had feared she might say she didn’t like them at all.

Then he dropped to one knee before her.

From a pouch, he poured out every beast crystal he possessed, offering them up with both hands.

"Nina... these are all my savings. Everything I have."

He paused, gathering his thoughts.

"Until now, all I ever cared about was training and becoming stronger. I never paid attention to anything else, and I don’t know how to court a female properly. This... is the only clumsy way I know how to show how I feel."

He had simply brought her the most beautiful things he owned.

His gaze was full of earnest devotion.

"Nina, I’ve liked you for a long time—long before now. I know I’m not the strongest male, and I’m not the best at taking care of you. But my feelings are no less sincere than theirs."

His voice lowered.

"I swear before the Beast God that I will protect you with everything I have."

He looked up at her, vulnerable and hopeful.

"Could you... give me a chance too?"

Nina took a small step back.

"Yanai... I’m sorry."

Her voice was gentle but firm.

"You’re a good person. But I... I don’t have those kinds of feelings for you."

Perhaps it was because she had always been wary of him. Even though he had helped her along the journey, she had never developed deeper feelings.

Yanai’s expression crumpled with pain.

"Nina... am I really not enough?"

His voice trembled.

"Why can’t it be me?"

Yanai had expected that Nina might refuse him. Still, hearing the words from her own lips felt like his heart was being torn apart.

Why was it that he could never win Nina’s affection?

"I’m sorry," Nina said softly, lowering her gaze, unsure how to explain what she felt.

"Nina... could you try to like me, even just a little?" Yanai pleaded. "I know I’m not good enough right now, but I can learn. I promise I’ll work hard. One day I’ll be just as capable as the others."

"It’s not that you’re not good enough," Nina replied gently. "Maybe we’re simply not right for each other."

She paused before continuing.

"Yanai, I’m truly grateful for all the care you’ve shown me along the way. But you should let me go. You deserve to find a female who suits you better."

She knew that Yanai had come because Sal had entrusted her safety to him, and for that she was sincerely thankful.

Yanai had interacted with very few females in his life. Perhaps it was simply because she was the only one he had grown close to that his feelings had begun to take shape.

And besides... their identities were not truly compatible.

Nina hesitated, wondering whether she should reveal her own identity to him. Yet the things he had once said still echoed in her mind, making her reluctant to do so.

She turned and waved toward Odian, who was standing not far away. He quickly flew over.

"Yanai, I should head back," Nina said quietly. Seeing the pain in his expression, her heart softened. "Please... take care of yourself."

She didn’t want to say anything harsher. It was better to leave him the space to calm down on his own.

The light in Yanai’s eyes dimmed. He gave a small nod.

With a quiet sigh, Nina allowed Odian to carry her back.

Yanai remained behind, sitting alone in the sea of flowers.

A single clear tear fell, landing softly on a petal.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the once-vivid landscape seemed to darken, as if a shadow had passed over the beautiful painting.

For the next two days, Yanai never returned.

Nina occasionally glanced toward the stone house where he had been staying.

He must have left, she thought.

She could only hope he would eventually find the happiness meant for him.

During those days, Sal and Odian kept a wary eye on one another, each preventing the other from finding a chance to take Nina away alone. As for Aviel, he had even fewer opportunities.

Meanwhile, Kith had finally finished kneeling on every last durian. Although Nina had not explicitly forgiven him, her heart had softened somewhat.

Finch had also been gone for two days. When Nina asked about it, Kith explained that Finch had said he needed to take care of something outside and would return once it was done.

Nina simply nodded and didn’t ask further.

Sal, frustrated by Odian’s constant interference, gathered Dahn and the others to discuss a plan.

He needed to find a way to slip away from Odian and spend time with Nina alone.

So one night, deep in the middle of the night, Sal quietly crept into Nina’s room.

He gently tapped her shoulder until she stirred awake.

"Nina... would you come somewhere with me?"

Nina blinked sleepily, her eyes half-open.

"Where are we going in the middle of the night?"

Why was Sal looking for her at such an hour?

"It’s not far," Sal said. "Not far at all."

"But the cubs..." Nina glanced at the sleeping little ones on the bed.

"Don’t worry," Sal reassured her. "Dahn and the others will come watch them. If anything happens, we’ll come right back. Besides, Odian and the others are nearby too—everything will be fine."

After a moment’s thought, Nina nodded. "Alright."

Sal lifted her gently in his arms and carried her quietly outside.

As soon as they left, Dahn and the others slipped into the room to watch over the cubs.

Sal brought Nina to the base of a towering tree nearby.

Looking up, she realized there was a small wooden treehouse nestled among the branches.

With practiced ease, Sal climbed up with her and guided her inside.

Then he slipped back out for a moment.

When he returned shortly afterward, he had changed into a different outfit.

Nina burst into laughter at the sight.

Sal was wearing a rather unusual set of clothes—something reminiscent of a modern servant’s outfit, though adapted to the beast world. The design was far bolder and more revealing, emphasizing his strong physique in a rather provocative way.

"So you dragged me all the way here just to show off that outfit?" Nina teased with a smile.

Sal stepped closer, his eyes gleaming mischievously.

"Well... what does my little master think?"

He leaned nearer, lowering his voice.

"And actually, there’s more than just this."

Before Nina could reply, he kissed her.

Taking her hand gently, he guided it as he slowly loosened the few pieces of beast-skin clothing he wore.

His kiss grew deeper, hotter, his breathing turning rough. His hands roamed across her graceful figure, leaving trails of heat in their wake.

"Nina..." she murmured softly.

"Nina... is this alright?" Sal’s voice was low and hoarse with restrained longing.

Nina, already flushed and breathless from his teasing, gave a small nod.

Sal’s eyes lit up with joy, and he pulled her closer, kissing her with renewed intensity.

Clothing slipped to the floor.

Warmth closed in around them.

Inside the quiet treehouse, soft whispers and breathless murmurs lingered deep into the night.
