Chapter 147: What if she finds me lacking?

The cubs stuck out their tongues at Taru.

"We’re all Mother’s good babies!"

"Are... all of these really her cubs?" Taru turned to Finch, seeking confirmation.

His face was filled with disbelief. Even now, he could hardly accept what he had just heard—but he also knew Kith had no reason to lie to him.

"Yes," Finch replied. "They’re all Nina’s cubs. Didi was the second to hatch."

Hearing Finch confirm it, Taru staggered back a step.

Heavens...

This female had given birth to so many cubs in one go—and all of them carried the bloodlines of rare, powerful races.

What kind of existence was she?

A divine female?

No wonder his foolish son hadn’t even managed to secure the position of guardian beast. A female like this could have any male she wanted.

Even the City Lord of White Tiger City—such an outstanding male—had yet to become her mate. The fact that his son had a single little fox cub at all was probably a blessing from the Beast God.

In Taru’s mind, her mates must all be males of the highest strength and status.

Immediately, he dropped his earlier arrogance. His attitude softened, turning respectful and cautious.

"My apologies, miss... I was rude just now."

He forced a warm smile, his tone suddenly gentle.

"If you don’t wish to go to Jade Fox City, then don’t. Living here in the wilderness is fine too. If you need anything, our Jade Fox City will do everything in our power to provide it."

If she didn’t want to go, so be it. All he hoped now was that she would accept his son.

And perhaps... in the future, she might give him another little fox grandchild.

The wilderness might be dangerous, but he could send fox clan males to protect her. Supplies were no issue—he could provide whatever she needed.

A trace of unease flickered in his eyes. He worried Nina might still hold his earlier behavior against him.

Fortunately, Nina responded with equal courtesy. "It’s alright. I don’t need anything for now. Thank you."

Taru let out a quiet breath of relief. "May I call you Nina, like Finch does?"

Calling her "lady" or "Miss" felt too distant—and she might one day become his son’s female. It would be better to grow closer.

"Of course, Uncle," Nina replied.

"Thank you, Nina," Taru said with a smile.

She truly had a gentle temperament—she hadn’t held his earlier behavior against him at all.

His gaze shifted toward Didi.

"Nina... may I hold Didi?"

Nina looked down at the little fox.

Didi immediately turned and buried himself deeper into her arms.

He didn’t like this "bad grandpa" who had spoken harshly to his mother.

Taru’s expression hardened. "Didi, Grandpa was wrong earlier. Will you forgive me?"

He glanced helplessly at Finch for help—but Finch simply looked away, pretending not to see.

Back then, he himself hadn’t been well received either.

Nina didn’t force Didi. She respected the cub’s feelings. "He might just be a little shy. Maybe later."

"...Alright." Taru sighed inwardly. This was his own doing. He would just have to wait for Didi to accept him gradually.

Nina smiled faintly and carried the cubs back inside.

Taru had Finch take him to his room. "Finch, Didi doesn’t seem to like me much. Think of a way to help me."

He had finally gained a grandson—he didn’t want to spend his whole life unable to even hold him.

"Just treat Nina and Didi better from now on," Finch said. "You were harsh toward Nina earlier, so Didi got upset."

Based on what he knew of Didi, that was most likely the reason.

"I understand. I was in the wrong earlier."

Taru felt genuine regret. Perhaps he had grown too accustomed to authority—too used to being domineering. He hadn’t expected to offend both his future daughter-in-law and his grandson.

"And you," he added, glancing at Finch, "try harder. Make Nina like you sooner."

Then he remembered the other cubs. "Are Nina’s mates... very strong?"

There was a hint of concern in his voice. He worried his son wouldn’t be competitive enough.

"They are," Finch admitted. "Nina currently has two mates. Both are extremely handsome. One is already at rank ten—and he’s also a powerful priest. The other is at peak rank nine. Kith and a male from the lynx clan are her guardian beasts."

A shadow of self-doubt flickered in Finch’s eyes.

Compared to them, his strength really wasn’t outstanding. Even in appearance, he had no advantage—Odian and the others were no less striking than he was.

"You’re saying she only has two mates... and two guardian beasts?"

Taru was stunned.

A female with conditions like Nina’s—by all logic, she should have had at least a dozen mates, if not hundreds.

How could there be so few?

"Does Nina really have such high standards?" Taru couldn’t help but sigh.

At this rate... my foolish son doesn’t seem to stand much of a chance.

"Yes," Finch said. "For now, Nina only has these few males. And only males of that caliber are worthy of her."

Ordinary males simply couldn’t match someone like Nina.

He paused, then added quietly, "But Nina doesn’t choose her mates based on strength or status. She only chooses those she truly likes. And she treats her mates and cubs exceptionally well."

"That makes sense," Taru nodded thoughtfully. "With how outstanding Nina herself is... it’s only natural."

Although they had only just met, he could already tell she was a remarkable female.

Otherwise, the cubs wouldn’t have been so attached to her.

In the Beast World, while cubs were naturally close to their mother, many females didn’t actually invest much effort in raising them—especially male cubs. They might depend on their mother instinctively, but rarely with such warmth and intimacy.

And for a male like Kith—someone of such high status—to be so devoted to her...

That alone proved Nina was extraordinary.

Taru’s gaze deepened with thought.

Perhaps... there might still be a way to help his foolish son.

"What do Nina and the cubs like?" he asked. "Tell me—I’ll see if I have anything suitable in my storage."

He wanted to prepare some gifts for them.

"Nina doesn’t lack anything right now," Finch said. "Father, do you have anything that can help increase strength? Like essence stones or similar?"

"Something to increase strength?" Taru frowned in confusion. "What would Nina need that for?"

Females didn’t usually possess abilities. Why would she need such things?

Was it meant for her mates?

"Nina wants to grow stronger," Finch explained. "She has a wood-type ability, and her level is already quite high—probably around rank seven or eight. So whatever you give should be something truly useful."

As he spoke, a trace of gloom crept into his expression.

Nina’s strength was already catching up to his.

He couldn’t help but worry, What if one day... she finds me lacking?
