Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Sizing Up the Situation

Leo Hale managed to shut the door to the neighboring house.

Holt Tate and the others fell into despair.

"What are you all doing just sitting here like idiots?"

Shannon Renner, however, stood up.

"That’s right. There are a few bullets left—enough for one each."

Russell Abbott gave a self-deprecating laugh.

’If we have to die, at least it shouldn’t be too painful. It’s far better than being torn apart and eaten by zombies.’

With red-rimmed eyes, Holt Tate slumped to the floor.

"But I don’t want to die. My mom is still waiting for me to come home."

"All of you, shut up. If you want to live, follow me."

Shannon Renner glanced over at Nina Jacobs, who was still killing zombies, and clenched her trembling hands into fists.

’In their past life, they had fallen into crisis so many times. And every time, Nina had urged them not to give up. In the end, they always managed to pull through.’

’She had gone through so much to be reborn; she absolutely couldn’t just die here.’

’If Nina Jacobs can do it, so can I!’

Just then, Nina Jacobs lopped off another zombie’s head.

She glanced up at the now-empty balcony across from them, a cold smirk touching her lips.

’Knowing Shannon Renner, she won’t die.’

Meanwhile, Chelsea Walsh could feel her pitifully weak Superpower dwindling to almost nothing.

Just a moment ago, Nina Jacobs had devised a plan: Chelsea would stand guard on the second floor, and if any zombies from next door climbed over the wall, she would use her Thunder Element Superpower to channel electricity through the wire fence and shock them off.

But more and more zombies were scaling the courtyard wall.

Nina Jacobs and the other two relentlessly killed the zombies in the yard. Ian Chandler’s hand, gripping his machete, was rubbed raw and bleeding.

The scent drove the zombies on the other side of the wall into a frenzy.

The number of zombies below began to swell.

The ones in the back swarmed forward.

"Uncle Hale, have Chelsea come down."

Nina Jacobs could see it too; Chelsea’s electric shocks were growing weaker.

By now, they had killed all the zombies that had gotten into the yard.

Leo Hale and Ian Chandler also desperately needed a break.

"Alright, I’ll go get her. You two, hurry inside and get some rest."

Daniel Hale said. Even he could see it wouldn’t be long before zombies started pouring over the wall from next door.

Nina Jacobs nodded. She took three bottles of ice-cold water from the refrigerator and handed them to Leo Hale, Ian Chandler, and the pale-faced Chelsea Walsh, who had just come downstairs.

The water was from her system’s inventory, and she had already mixed in Superpower Enhancing Potions and Healing Potions.

All four of them had their share of cuts, bruises, and muscle strains.

She worried that recovering too quickly would arouse suspicion, so in her spare time, she had prepared a diluted version to use in emergencies like this.

"Thanks, Sis."

Ian Chandler drank a few mouthfuls of the ice-cold water and instantly felt much better.

"This is all my fault," Leo Hale said, his eyes red. "I never should have let that woman stay next door."

By now, he was becoming more and more convinced that today’s disaster was all his fault.

’If they really died here today, it would be entirely on him.’

"You have ten minutes to rest."

Nina Jacobs ignored Leo Hale’s remorse and went upstairs alone.

Seeing the balcony across the way—the one Keaton Sloan had opened with his Superpower—she leaped across the gap.

By now, Holt Tate and the others had done as Shannon Renner instructed, throwing everything they could find on the second floor down onto the staircase.

This included wardrobes, bed frames, and mattresses.

The goal was to block the zombies downstairs from getting up the stairs.

Everyone knew it was only a temporary solution. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Still, Holt Tate and his group did as Shannon Renner told them.

A noise came from the balcony.

Holt Tate turned to look and was shocked to see Nina Jacobs—the woman who had just killed Keaton Sloan—walk in.

"Y-Y-You..."

The armchair in Holt Tate’s hands fell with a THUD.

’Is she here to kill us?’

The thought had barely formed when Nina Jacobs was standing right in front of him.

"Know how to use these?"

Nina Jacobs asked.

"W-W-W-What..."

’What is she talking about?’

Nina Jacobs held up several guns. They were the ones they had picked up from that stubbly guy’s place last time.

’Holt Tate and his group looked like they had some training; they should know how to use guns.’

"O-O-Of... of course, we do!"

Understanding Nina Jacobs’s intentions, Holt Tate finally managed to get his words out straight.

"Good. You guys get to the balcony."

"Kill as many as you can."

Nina Jacobs tossed a bag of weapons to Holt Tate.

"Okay..."

It was only then that Holt Tate processed what was happening.

’She’s... helping us? Giving us weapons to kill zombies?’

"Where did you get these?"

Seeing Nina Jacobs turn to leave, Russell Abbott hurriedly asked.

"Found them."

Nina Jacobs replied nonchalantly.

"Nina Jacobs? What are you doing here?"

Shannon Renner came out and saw Nina Jacobs, thinking her eyes were playing tricks on her.

"Didn’t I say I’d save you?"

With that, Nina Jacobs left, leaving Shannon Renner standing there, stunned.

"Save me?"

A moment later, a hot tear streamed down Shannon Renner’s cheek.

’But... in her past life, she had treated Nina Jacobs so horribly.’

"I thought...

I thought you were also..."

Shannon Renner wept with relief. ’Thank god Nina wasn’t reborn.’

’Thank god she doesn’t know what happened in our past life...’

Nina Jacobs was already back in her own house.

’Of course, she had no real intention of saving Shannon Renner.’

’She could handle this zombie attack on her own, but she didn’t want to be the one to stick her neck out.’

’With members of a rescue team present, fending off the zombies had to be a group effort.’

’It couldn’t look like she did it all by herself.’

’As for whether Shannon Renner lived or died, she couldn’t care less.’

"What? You’re having them kill zombies too?"

The others were shocked when they learned of Nina Jacobs’s plan.

"So that’s why you told me to shut the door earlier?"

"If Sis hadn’t had their door shut, the zombies from their side would have swarmed our door,"

"we’d never be able to kill them all."

Ian Chandler answered for Nina Jacobs.

"Sis was just assessing the situation,"

"It wasn’t about saving them or hurting them."

"Clever."

Nina Jacobs couldn’t help but praise Ian Chandler.

’In the end, it was all for their own survival.’

"You know how to use a gun, right?"

’Nina remembered that in her past life, Ian Chandler had been a decent shot. She’d heard he had practiced since he was a kid.’

"I do, Sis."

Ian Chandler nodded obediently.

"Then you’ll provide cover for us."

Nina Jacobs pointed upstairs, and Ian Chandler immediately understood.

’From upstairs, he could pick off some of the zombies climbing over the wall.’

"Nina, they’re coming!"

Daniel Hale and Vera Coleman had been keeping watch at the window. Just as expected, the zombies from next door were already climbing over the wall.

Five or six of them dropped into the yard and immediately scrambled back to their feet.

"Time to move."

After drinking a Superpower Enhancing Potion, Nina Jacobs found her energy and Superpower were both still at their peak.

’It seems her abilities are much stronger than they were in her past life.’

Meanwhile, next door, Holt Tate and his group had already started shooting zombies.

With every bullet that found its mark, the excitement on their faces grew.

After getting permission from Nina Jacobs, Shannon Renner also climbed over the balcony and joined the three of them in the yard to kill zombies.

Leo Hale, however, refused to even give her a pleasant look.

Shannon Renner still had her zombie-killing experience, and with her help, Chelsea Walsh’s burden was lightened considerably.

Vera Coleman’s frantically pounding heart finally settled down a little.

"Damn it, we’ve drawn the zombies from the nearby alleys!"

Daniel Hale saw his worst fear realized on the drone’s camera feed.

They had just barely managed to clear out the zombies in both yards.

At this rate, when will it ever end!
