Chapter 19: Chapter 20

When Julian Lancaster found me, I was standing under a streetlamp, the dim yellow light casting a warm glow on me. I was looking down, holding a cup of hot cocoa. My appearance hadn’t changed, but Julian felt like there was something different about me.

Without a second thought, he yanked open the car door and strode toward me.

I was still musing over the new perfume from earlier in the day when someone roughly grabbed my wrist. I wanted to cry out, but then I caught a whiff of that familiar woody fragrance that belonged to Julian.

"It’s me."

I found it a bit amusing and pulled my hand away from him, asking, "What is Mr. Lancaster doing in Caelus? Shouldn’t you be in the country with your Serena Sullivan at this hour?"

"Oh, sorry—" I feigned surprise, "I forgot, your engagement party was ruined."

Julian knew I was mocking him but wasn’t annoyed. He looked intently into my eyes. "Why did you leave me?"

I was completely confused. "Mr. Lancaster, when were we ever together?"

Julian didn’t answer my question. "Are you still mad? You know, I’ve already promised to marry you. Even if I’m engaged to Serena Sullivan, you’re still my one and only fiancée. You’ve got what you wanted, so why leave?"

"Can you be normal?" Even though I knew he was irrational, his words still shocked me.

"Did Mr. Lancaster not receive my gift? That recording and those tax documents, I’m sure Mr. Lancaster knows better than I do."

So, was it because of this that she left?

"That recording was her framing you, and the tax documents were forged. If you’re upset, we’ll go back to—"

"Enough!" Julian was still rambling on, but I didn’t want to hear his voice anymore: "I did all this to make you and your precious Serena Sullivan fall from grace. How about it, Mr. Lancaster, is this what you wanted, are you satisfied now?" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"It was you?" A flash of shock crossed Julian’s eyes. He initially thought it was his business rivals setting him up, pretending to be innocent in front of him. But now I admitted it was me. But hadn’t I always wanted to marry him?

"Why?" He heard his own voice asking.

"Why?" I softly repeated his words, "Why what? Didn’t Mr. Lancaster say it yourself? I’m just a stepping stone on your path to success."

"Now this stepping stone doesn’t want to be stepped on by you, isn’t Mr. Lancaster satisfied with that?"

"You’re still mad, aren’t you?"

"What do I have to be mad about?"

Julian couldn’t understand why everything was fine, yet I still left.

He couldn’t believe I didn’t love him anymore. After so many years entangled with him, doing so much for him, why would I just send those things and run off to Caelus alone, as if abandoning him? How could I dare? How could I?

Right, those things.

Julian was not giving up. "Then what’s the meaning of doing all this?"

"Heh..." I laughed, "I did all this to drag you and your beloved Serena Sullivan to hell together. How does it feel to lose face in front of the whole nation, isn’t that wonderful?"

"You ruined my engagement party?" Julian seemed to latch onto the keyword, "You don’t want me to get engaged with Serena Sullivan, do you? You still love me, right..."

"..."

I was completely speechless. "Can you stop acting crazy here, Julian Lancaster? Why do you think I absolutely must love you?"

"Isn’t that the case? Before, when I was starting my business, you didn’t trust anyone else, you insisted on accompanying me yourself, even with a high fever, staying up all night to negotiate deals with me..."

Julian himself wasn’t sure what he was doing; he didn’t know what good it did to say these things. But when he heard me say that I didn’t love him anymore, he just wanted to refute with the past. Before, I loved him very much. Before, I loved him most of all. How could that change?

"So you still remember," I snorted coldly, "But do you also remember what you did after we closed the deal?"
