Chapter 68: Chapter 68: Hospital

"AHHH—"

The moment Brianna Hudson hit the ground, her scream pierced everyone’s ears.

Alice was a full-grown mare, and a large one at that. Brianna had been thrown off while the horse was out of control, so the force of the impact was undeniable.

Jessie Sterling was relatively close. She had already dismounted from Allen and was running toward Brianna.

In the stands, Lynn Jennings and Cheryl Stuart were also startled. The accident happened in an instant. It wasn’t until Brianna’s agonized scream reached them that Lynn seemed to snap out of her daze and hurry down.

Brianna’s fall was serious. A broken bone, at the very least.

Jessie and Lynn also went to the hospital.

In the car, Lynn took the wheel this time, ordering Jessie to sit in the passenger seat.

"Are you really okay?" Lynn asked.

Jessie was exasperated. She had already answered this question no less than ten times on the way, but Lynn was still worried and kept asking.

"I’m fine. Shouldn’t you have seen it clearly from the stands? I was a good distance away from her. Nothing happened to me at all."

Lynn’s lips remained pressed into a tight line. "It was too dangerous. If Brianna’s crazy horse had crashed into you, I swear I would’ve made her pay dearly!"

Jessie gave a dry laugh. "But I’m fine!"

Lynn said, "Either way, you’re going to the hospital for a checkup first."

This was the main reason they were going to the hospital.

Brianna was injured, but neither of them was family. They could only notify the Hudson family, so there was no point in them being at the hospital for her.

Jessie sighed. She didn’t think it was necessary, but Lynn insisted, so she had no choice but to go along with it.

Besides, while Brianna’s injury wasn’t really her fault, they should still visit her out of basic human decency.

’What’s more,’ Jessie thought, ’I still haven’t gotten my hands on those Sanctum shares. It’s all down in black and white. The deal can’t just be called off because of an accident, right?’

’Just how am I supposed to bring this up later?’

Before Jessie could figure it out, they arrived at the hospital.

There wasn’t much of a wait at the private hospital. Lynn quickly pushed her into an examination room.

When Jessie came out, Lynn handed her phone to her. "Brianna was taken into surgery. She’s not out yet. You’d better call your family and President Morgan back. Your phone was about to explode from all the calls."

A flash of astonishment crossed Jessie’s face when she heard this.

She was about to ask how her family knew. She hadn’t said a thing. Logically, after being partners in crime for so many years, she knew Lynn was extremely tight-lipped and would never proactively tell her parents what had just happened.

But before the words left her mouth, Jessie remembered the bodyguards assigned to her.

In the past, she only had the bodyguards her dad had arranged. But ever since she got engaged to Victor Morgan, he had assigned people to her as well.

Normally, the bodyguards stayed out of Jessie’s sight to avoid making her uncomfortable.

In a situation like today’s, the bodyguards tailing her would definitely report back to her family and Victor Morgan.

Once Jessie put the pieces together, her expression turned even uglier than it was before her checkup.

Lynn, on the other hand, seemed to be gloating. "Aren’t you going to make those calls?" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Jessie: "..."

Outside, the sky had completely darkened. Jessie walked to the fire escape, staring at the dozens of missed calls on her phone. Only the last few had been answered by Lynn. She bit her lip and decided to call her family back first.

"Hello? Jessie?" The moment Seth Sterling picked up, his voice came through the phone. Before Jessie could say a word, he unleashed a torrent of questions.

"You went riding in Port Caldoria today? Why were you racing people? Are you hurt? Are you still at the hospital? What did the doctor say after the checkup? Your sister is already on her way. Just stay where you are and wait for her to pick you up."

Jessie’s mind was suddenly flooded with information, but thankfully she could keep it all straight. "I ran into Brianna Hudson while I was getting my hair done with Lynn. She said that since I’ll be moving to Aethelburg after getting married, we won’t have much time to hang out, so she insisted on racing me. I’m fine, really! You and Mom don’t need to worry. And why are you sending my sister to get me? I’m not a kid. Besides, Lynn is still here with me, isn’t she?"

Hearing her voice, Seth Sterling let out a sigh of relief. It was clear Jessie was full of energy and didn’t sound hurt or frightened.

"Only a child would make your mother and me worry like this. It’s fine for you to go riding normally, but why did you have to start racing people? Those horses are so fast when they’re galloping. You’re so small. If you’d been thrown off like Brianna Hudson was today, how terrifying would that have been!" Seth rambled on.

Jessie giggled, covering her mouth as if to share a secret with Seth. "Dad, let me tell you, I was amazing today!"

"Amazing how? That you managed not to go flying off the horse?"

Jessie laughed again. "I won shares of their company, Sanctum, from Brianna Hudson!"

Seth seemed to pause for a moment on the other end of the line before it clicked. "That was the bet you two made?"

"The prize!" Jessie corrected him earnestly.

Seth Sterling: "..."

’Isn’t that the same thing?’

He mulled it over for a moment. "How is the Hudson family’s girl doing now?"

"She’s in surgery." Jessie shivered, recalling the sight of Brianna being carried out of the riding arena. "She was conscious when they took her into the operating room. It’s probably a broken arm, but I don’t know if her leg is okay. She’s still in there, hasn’t come out yet."

Hearing this, Seth couldn’t help but feel relieved once more that Jessie was unharmed. Otherwise, he probably wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight.

"Don’t bring up the bet with Brianna Hudson today. Have your sister contact Ivan Hudson about it later," Seth said.

Ivan Hudson was the eldest son of the Hudson family and Brianna’s full-blooded older brother. He had already taken over the family business.

The Hudson family was also a client of the Sterling family, so it would be more convenient to have Quincy Sterling handle it.

What Seth didn’t say was that Jessie and Brianna’s deal was like a game between two children. With one of them injured, it was hard to say if the "game" would still count. But if Quincy contacted Ivan, it would be a purely business matter, with no room for such sentimentalities.

Jessie was more than happy to dump this on her sister. After ending the call with her family, she finally called Victor Morgan.
