After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 20: Joel Sutton’s Plea for Help
When I got home, it was already late.
Maplewood Gardens was brightly lit, and once I got home, I sent Lane away.
My in-laws were home, but Henry hadn’t returned.
"Zoe, where’s Henry? Isn’t he with you?" My mother-in-law asked when she saw me return alone.
"After the panel discussion, I ran into a friend and went out to dinner with her. I thought Henry was already home." I put on a face of surprise.
If my guess is right, Henry won’t be coming back tonight. With a new prey, his heart had already flown elsewhere.
My father-in-law’s face was stern. They hadn’t even returned to City C yet, and Henry was already staying out all night. If they weren’t around, wouldn’t he treat the house like a hotel?
"Call his phone. If you can’t get through, call all of his friends!" With a wave of his hand, my father-in-law was extremely annoyed.
My mother-in-law gave me a look, and I handed her the phone.
This kind of reprimanding task, it’s better for me to stay out of it and let my mother-in-law handle it; Henry would never dare to scold his own mother.
Even though I wasn’t familiar with Henry’s close friends, I still had their phone numbers on hand, except for Ivan Underwood’s.
My mother-in-law started scrolling through the contacts and making calls, on speakerphone. After four or five calls, I heard Silas Lockwood’s voice, "Brother Henry, it’s your wife’s call!"
"Don’t answer!" Henry’s voice was full of impatience, and my in-laws and I heard it loud and clear.
Beside him, there were also others egging him on; in their eyes, I was just an unloved, resentful wife.
"It’s your mother..." Silas lowered his voice.
The teasing voices instantly disappeared.
Henry answered the call, "Mom?"
"Henry, where are you?! Why aren’t you home for dinner? You’re always out indulging with your playboy friends; do you want to ruin yourself?" My mother-in-law, usually so gentle and graceful, now had the demeanor of a tigress.
"I’m just out gathering with a few friends. I’ll be back soon." Henry replied, exasperated.
"Zoe also went out to dinner with friends and is already back home. I’ll give you half an hour to get back immediately!" My mother-in-law hung up the phone angrily because I heard a woman’s coquettish laughter from the other side.
She looked at me with a somewhat complicated expression, "Zoe, you’d better give him a good scolding when he gets back. He’s just too reckless!"
I took the phone, nodding like a wronged wife.
Half an hour later, Henry returned, full of resentment. I had just finished eating and was wiping my mouth when his hellish gaze sent a chill through me.
He, having gorged himself on anger, didn’t need to eat, took off his coat, tossed it on the sofa, and went upstairs immediately.
My in-laws didn’t care if he had dinner or not and continued watching TV on the sofa.
I couldn’t just join them in watching TV; I really couldn’t get into those anti-Japanese war dramas, so I grit my teeth and went upstairs.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom, and Henry’s phone was tossed on the bed. I was somewhat tempted to see what’s inside; after I separated from Azure Vaughn, did he still contact her?
I picked up the phone but found it required facial recognition to unlock.
Just as I sighed in regret, a text message notification popped up, partially visible.
It seemed to be a reply from Azure: Sorry, Mr. Preston, I have a boyfriend, and I’ve heard that you...
I couldn’t see the rest; it needed to be unlocked.
"What are you doing?" Henry’s voice suddenly filled the room, chilling with coldness.
The next second, the phone was snatched from my hand. He warned me, "Don’t mess with my phone again."
Saying that he looked down, unlocked it, and checked the message he had just received, his expression growing darker. A man like him, what woman wouldn’t he be able to have? Just by curling his finger, a sea of willing divorcing women could fill a football field, yet Azure turned him down.
A man’s pride took a hit like never before, his charisma severely challenged.
"Who is she?" I asked deliberately.
"None of your concern," Henry shot me an annoyed look.
"If I’m not mistaken, her next words should be that she heard you’re married and hopes you’ll be loyal to your marriage and not cheat, right?" I wasn’t angry; in fact, I felt proud of my discernment.
I know Azure’s character; she would definitely talk about righteousness and morality.
Henry sat on the bed, coldly asking, "So what?"
I immediately took out a divorce agreement from the drawer. This time I altered it, asking for 3% of his Preston Group shares.
After reading it, Henry actually laughed, "3% of the shares? Zoe Hathaway, your appetite is quite big."
Mind you, there are many major shareholders in The Preston Group, many of whom don’t even have a 3% holding.
I hesitated, wondering how to tactfully tell Henry that if he doesn’t want to give those 3% shares now, he will end up giving more?
In the past life, it even got to 10%.
"Isn’t she bothered because you’re married? Just pay a small price to divorce me, and you can pursue her without any worries," I reminded Henry.
"Do you think she’s worth it?" Henry raised an eyebrow, a bit sarcastic.
I was choked again; not worth it? Later you’d give up everything for her!
Henry probably hadn’t understood his true feelings, seeing Azure as just another fling, the type you’d get tired of once caught, which is why he could speak so shamelessly.
I sighed, tore the divorce agreement, and tossed it into the trash bin. It seems I’ll have to wait a bit and prepare a new agreement asking for 10% shares.
Henry watched my every move coldly. I, with a trace of regret, went to the bathroom to shower.
When I came out from the shower, Henry was on the balcony making a call, with a cigarette between his fingers. The smoke was carried in by the night breeze, making me cough a few times.
He glanced back at me, ending the call, and casually snuffed out the cigarette on the ground with his shoe.
"Can’t you toss it in the trash? Auntie Lawson already has a hard time cleaning." I said deliberately, while elegantly applying skincare products.
I rely quite a bit on Laura Lawson, having her handle all meals, brew herbal medicine, and oversee the main bedroom’s cleanliness, and of course, I pay her more accordingly.
For this, she is very grateful to me.
"Aren’t they hired to do chores?" Henry sneered, "If she thinks it’s tiring, she shouldn’t do this kind of work."
I shook my head; this man would regret it someday.
Henry lay down on the bed, and my phone rang—it was Joel Sutton calling. I was a bit surprised.
When I answered, Joel’s voice came, slightly desperate, "Miss Hathaway! Help me! I’ve been beaten up..."
"Where are you?" I asked directly, my demeanor tensing.
"The Apex Hotel parking lot!" Joel had just said when the sounds of punching and kicking came through, followed by his cries of pain, and then the call ended.
Without a word, I changed clothes, grabbed my car keys, and prepared to leave.
"Where are you going?" Henry unexpectedly asked with a cold interrogation.
