After Rebirth, I Replaced My Ex-Husband's True Love-Chapter 31: His Tenderness
It was Azure Vaughn’s call.
For Henry Preston to answer it so quickly proves that he considers this call very important, no matter the time or place, he will pick up immediately.
Even with me, his nominal wife, beside him, he doesn’t mind.
"What’s wrong? Don’t cry," Henry’s voice was a tenderness I had never heard before, "wait for me there, I’ll be right over."
As soon as the call was over, Henry pulled over and started urging me, "Take a taxi back, or I can have someone pick you up, just wait by the roadside for a while."
"What’s going on?" I asked curiously.
"There’s something I need to deal with," Henry replied impatiently.
"Where are you going to deal with it? Take me with you, I’m just bored," I deliberately refused to get out of the car.
I thought Henry would refuse, but unexpectedly he turned his head to look at me, with a hint of cruel amusement in his eyes, "Do you really want to go together?"
It was probably something that happened to Azure, asking for his help. If I went, I’d only see him solving problems for another woman, and would definitely get jealous.
Henry just enjoyed making me uncomfortable so that I would regret marrying him.
I answered simply, "Let’s go."
Without further ado, Henry stepped on the gas, and the car sped along the road.
Eventually, the car stopped outside a mall. After getting out, I glanced around, and Henry had already gone inside. I followed him all the way to the sixth floor, which was filled with various food shops.
A Japanese restaurant was bustling with noise, seemingly something had happened, but I didn’t go in. I stood quietly at a distance watching.
Five minutes later, Henry came out with Azure, who seemed to have been crying, her eyes red.
Henry raised his hand to stroke her hair, like gently petting a beloved kitten, even bending slightly to listen attentively to Azure.
Anyway, there were all sorts of rumors about him before; he couldn’t be bothered with discretion in public.
There was a momentary void in my heart; after forcibly ignoring my inner emotions, I took out my phone to snap a picture, then turned to leave. While taking the elevator down, I heard people discussing what had happened at the Japanese restaurant just now.
The rough gist was that Azure went to the restaurant for a meal but discovered that their ingredients had issues, with salmon containing insect eggs. When she brought it up with the owner, a dispute broke out, and she was even locked in the kitchen, forbidden to leave.
Girls will be girls; such a trivial issue also needed a character like Henry. What was infuriating was that Henry was more than willing.
After leaving the mall, I took a taxi back and sent the picture I took to Ivan Underwood while on the way.
It wasn’t until I got home that I received his reply: ?
I don’t even know why I sent it to him, expecting sympathy?
Just then, Leah Lane called excitedly, "Zoe, are you free tomorrow?"
"Yes, what’s up?" I asked.
"Accompany me to try on wedding dresses. Connor and I are tentatively set to get engaged next weekend and plan for a wedding by the end of the year." Leah’s tone was cheerful, her happiness audible.
"Sure, give me the address, and I’ll be there by eight in the morning, how’s that?" I replied.
"Great!" Leah quickly hung up and sent me the address of a bridal shop.
I rubbed my temples and walked into the living room to rest a bit, feeling somewhat exhausted. Laura Lawson and another maid were cleaning. Seeing me come in, they both greeted me.
I lay down on the sofa, closing my eyes for a moment, with the image of Henry caressing Azure’s hair lingering in my mind.
That’s the gentleness I’ve been yearning for ten years, yet Azure got it easily, voluntarily from Henry.
"Auntie Lawson, I want to ask you a question." I opened my eyes, seeing Laura crouching to wipe the coffee table, and spoke up.
Laura answered respectfully, "Madam, just ask."
After pondering for a few seconds, I asked, "I have a friend who’s still in college with a very good boyfriend around her age; their relationship is great. But recently, a married man has been pursuing her, and it seems she is a bit swayed. Do you think she should choose her boyfriend or the married man?"
Laura exchanged looks with the other maid before answering, "Of course, her own boyfriend. She should never engage with a married man!"
"But the married man is wealthier than her boyfriend and is persistent in pursuing her," I gazed at Laura.
"Even so, she should refuse, otherwise it’s too immoral, it’s destroying someone’s family. Besides, what’s so good about a man who cheats?" Laura, a bit agitated, seemed genuine in her thoughts.
The whole family had right views, so why did they all falter in the past life?
I have to commend Henry; single-handedly, he managed to lead their views astray.
The other maid was also indignant, "Of course, she shouldn’t become a mistress! No matter how beautiful a woman is, if she becomes a mistress, she’s just a temptress!"
Laura was probably reminded of her daughter. After all, what I spoke of was very similar to Azure’s background, except she didn’t know a married man was pursuing Azure.
She tentatively asked, "Madam, how old is your friend?"
I casually replied, "A senior in college, graduating next year."
As soon as the words were out, Laura visibly sighed in relief.
"Alright, Auntie Lawson, go make dinner now." I instructed.
It was already evening; all I wanted was a meal and to go lie on the bed alone emptying my mind.
Without realizing it, I fell asleep on the sofa until Henry woke me up, "Zoe Hathaway, get up!"
Muddled, I opened my eyes to see Henry’s stern expression. He held a lipstick, exactly the one I left in his car today. Was it discovered that quickly?
After leaving the mall, Henry must have sent Azure back; otherwise, it wouldn’t have been found so quickly.
"What’s the matter?" I pretended not to know, sitting up and rubbing my eyes.
"Did you leave it in my car on purpose?" Henry threw the lipstick at me, sneering, "Aren’t you waiting for a divorce? Ready to go our ways? Playing tricks like this, is it fun?"
Holding the lipstick in my hand, calmly I replied, "It’s just a lipstick, why are you so mad? It’s not like I left a bottle of poison in your car."
Henry glared at me darkly, "Don’t ask what you already know."
"Oh, did your little damsel in distress see it today? Is she jealous?" I apologized nonchalantly, "Really sorry, I’ll pay attention next time."
"Don’t use your shady tactics on her, or don’t blame me for not going easy on you." Henry seemed very concerned I might harm Azure.
I gave a bitter smile, my composure cracking slightly, "Don’t worry, I didn’t go into the Japanese restaurant with you today, nor saw your little lover. I don’t even know who she is, so how would I deal with her?"
Henry would surely protect Azure well, including today’s incident, ensuring it wouldn’t be reported in the media to prevent damaging Azure’s reputation.
Henry turned and went upstairs, his departure enveloped in a chill.
He finally managed to have Azure turn to him for help, bringing them a bit closer, but then Azure stepped into his car and found another woman’s lipstick, remembered his married status, instantly widening the gap again. No wonder he was furious.
