Alpha's Lost Luna Returns With His Twins-Chapter 42-The Engagement Is Off
Kash:
I should have guessed it. Lara would find out sooner or later.
I just didn’t understand why she was making such a big deal out of it without even talking to me first.
Was she really going to spread rumors and then come ask me what happened?
I was even more surprised because she used to say it was fine for an alpha king to have more mates.
Yet here she was, unable to handle the idea of her mate being with someone else.
"What is my daughter saying? You spent the night with that woman?" Mr. Ronald clearly didn’t understand the concept of respecting an ex, or someone else’s child’s mother.
Because that’s what Iris was. No, we weren’t together. We were separated.
But how did he think he could mention her in that tone and I’d stay quiet about it?
The look on my face must have said it all, because he quickly added, "Kash, that woman left you before. She didn’t care about you. And now here you are, upsetting my daughter for her." His voice softened as he spoke.
My eyes shifted to Lara, and I noticed how her eyes began to water.
"I didn’t spend the night with her. The kids played a little prank and locked us in the storeroom. Iris managed to open the door and walked out. It’s not like she wanted to stay in the same room as me either." I explained, noticing my mother’s disapproving expression.
I needed to stop going back and forth between women.
There was a reason I’d chosen Lara before.
I didn’t want to be seen as a man who couldn’t stay loyal.
"That’s it. I don’t want to talk about it again," I said firmly.
"These women, when they sit together, they always gossip. See, you should have spoken to Kash first. I know he would never do anything to hurt or disappoint you. He’s an alpha king, Kash. He has other things to handle. Do you think he sits around thinking about women all day?" Mr. Ronald commented in a sly tone, clearly trying to hit two birds with one stone.
But I could tell Lara was still unconvinced. She looked upset.
"Anyway, you’ve come here so early in the morning. I’m guessing it’s a special occasion?" I asked, walking toward the couch and sitting down.
Lara still looked upset until I patted the empty seat beside me, and she instantly sat down.
"Yes, we were thinking about holding a proper engagement ceremony," her father explained.
I remembered how I had proposed to her and how we had exchanged rings.
I had planned it as a beautiful evening on the rooftop of the highest restaurant in the city.
We had been discussing a formal ceremony for a while, so I guessed her father thought now that Iris was back, he needed to remind me that I was engaged to his daughter.
"Sure, I’m all for it. But don’t expect me to go out shopping or anything. I’ve got a lot of work pending. With the product launch coming up, I’ll be extremely busy. But my mother, sister, and Lara can go ahead and do the shopping," I said, lightly tapping Lara’s elbow to get her attention.
She turned, pouted, and then looked away again, making it clear she was upset.
"I’ll be busy too," she hissed. "I’ll be part of the shoots. So if you don’t even have time to come pick a dress with me, then fine, we can just postpone it." Lara’s voice carried that familiar tone of frustration.
I should have known Iris’s return would cause tension between us.
"I didn’t say I wouldn’t go anywhere with you. I said most of the shopping. Of course I’ll come with you to pick a dress," I corrected quickly, trying to ease her mind and make sure the ceremony wouldn’t be postponed.
"Okay, then it’s fine," she said, clasping her hands together with a small smile.
I’d noticed that Lara got happy a little too easily.
It was a good thing sometimes because there were moments when I wasn’t in the mood to play along.
Just one kind gesture and she’d be content again.
"Now that we’re already talking about marriage and everything, I wanted to talk about the Blue River," I said.
But the moment I mentioned the river, I noticed her father’s expression change.
"What about it?" he asked.
"Don’t you think it’s time I visited the Blue River? You once told me there would come a day when you’d finally take me there. It’s been some time, and I think I’m ready now." As soon as I said that, her father began shaking his head, which immediately caught my attention.
"The thing is," he began, "I would have loved to take you to the Blue River, but there’s been a problem. There are creatures guarding the river, monsters we can’t defeat. There’s been an agreement between werewolves and those beings for a long time. We protect their land, and in return, they grant us strength. That’s all we can ask for. Anything beyond that could enrage them."
He explained calmly, as if it were nothing but it truly shocked me.
All this time, and only now was he telling me this?
"What do you mean? You told me that once I marry Lara, I’ll be the king of the river as well. And now you’re saying it’s not possible because the monsters took over that river a long time ago?" I muttered, struggling to stay calm.
All this effort –for what? To find out I couldn’t even have the river?
"You may still be the king of the river. You’ll receive strength, protection, and whatever else those creatures can provide. What more do you need the river for?" Lord Ronald asked, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
I began scratching the corner of my thumb with my nail, trying to control my anger.
"I want the whole river, every drop of it."
As soon as I said that, the look on Lara’s father’s face said everything.
He was petrified.
"Well, I assumed you were marrying my daughter because you loved her," he replied coldly, "but it seems you’re more focused on the river instead. And sadly, that’s not something I can allow. Angering those monsters would throw the entire South into despair."
Her father stood up from the couch.
Lara looked between him and me, her eyes full of anxiety.
I already knew where this was heading.
"The engagement is off—for now," Lord Ronald declared, grabbing his daughter’s arm and forcing her to stand.
I sat there, jaw clenched, watching them.
My mother and everyone else looked panicked as they watched Lord Ronald lead his daughter away.
