Chapter 47: 47-She Wants Lara To End Up With Kash

Iris:

I had been taking care of my son in the meantime, feeding him and helping him calm down.

In fact, he wanted to stay close to his father most of the time, while Kash kept getting calls from his fiancΓ©e. π—³πš›π—²π•–πš πšŽπš‹π—»π—Όπ•§π—²π₯.𝚌𝚘𝐦

Amy had finally stopped crying, but I knew the questions would start again.

"What happened to Colin, Mommy?" she had been asking nonstop.

By late afternoon, Colin was in Kash’s arms, his head resting on his father’s shoulder as they walked outside in the garden.

Colin refused to get down or talk to anyone, and it seemed Kash didn’t want that either.

"Look at them, don’t they look sweet?" my mother cheered from behind me, making me clench my fists secretly as I folded my arms across my chest.

Amy was with Scarlett, watching a cartoon movie.

I stood by the window, staring at Kash and Colin.

"Why did you do that?" I asked my mother without turning around.

She played dumb, keeping quiet until I closed my eyes and asked again.

"I know it was you."

That was all I said before I heard her sigh beside me.

"That was a little test. I wanted to show you that Kash cares about his children," she said.

As soon as she finished speaking, I turned sharply toward her, ready to lash out if I could.

But I held back, knowing she would take it out on my son.

I swallowed the anger building inside me.

"Really? By hurting my child? Who told you I wanted my son to be part of this test? How dare you drag him into it?" I shouted, then quickly lowered my voice when I saw her glaring at me.

Silent tears ran down my face as helplessness took over.

"You don’t understand. It’s important for us to know how far he’s willing to go for his children," my mother hissed, showing no shame.

"It’s only important to you because you’re the reason my son is in pain. You’re doing it for your son," I shot back, my fists tight, my eyes filling with tears.

"Whatever it is, the truth is that he cares. Didn’t you see his fiancΓ©e calling nonstop? He didn’t answer her once," my mother replied, sounding almost proud, as if this were some kind of game.

"Well, sooner or later he’ll answer her. What’s your point anyway?" I asked, keeping one eye on Kash and Colin.

"Did you talk to him about the water, the blue water?" she asked.

I let out a long sigh, dropping my arms from my chest and placing my hands on my waist.

I looked at her tiredly, my head tilted.

"Mom, the engagement ended."

As soon as I said that, I saw real defeat spread across her face.

"What? No. When? When did it end? She was hereβ€”oh no. Was it when the kids told her he was with you? Didn’t you explain to her it wasn’t like that?"

The panic in my mother’s voice made me stare at her in disbelief.

"Look at you, so worried about your son-in-law’s fiancΓ©e," I laughed softly, taunting her.

Did she ever care about how I felt about her actions?

Of course not. If she could, she would sell me to someone just to save her son.

She wasn’t even a good mother to the daughter who was right in front of her, but she wanted her son to wake up so that she could be a good mother to him.

"Don’t be ridiculous. You know why it’s important for him to stay engaged to her. If she’s not in the picture, it will be harder for us to get a hold of the water," my mother explained, pretending we were on the same side, when I was just being dragged into her plans.

"Well, it’s not like I can do anything anymore. It wasn’t because of my children that the relationship ended. You were playing games too much. Besides, they had other problems of their own," I told her, hoping she wouldn’t start blaming my children.

"Well, you need to do something about it. He must go back to Lara," my mother said, locking her eyes with mine, as if to remind me that if it didn’t happen, my son wouldn’t get any help.

It was cruel of her to ask this of me when she knew how much I had suffered missing Kash.

Now she wanted me to convince him to go back to Lara.

"Sometimes I wonder if we’ve done too much and made him too drawn to you again," my mother sighed, pressing her palm to her forehead. "And now that he knows you didn’t cheatβ€”oh, I’m so annoyed."

I stared at her face, watching the small spark appear in her expression.

I could already sense that she had come up with another cruel idea.

Knowing her, I expected nothing less.

Kash started walking back toward the house, still carrying Colin on his shoulder.

When he came inside, he pressed a finger to his lips, hushing me and letting me know that Colin had fallen asleep.

I tried to take Colin from him, but Colin clung to his father’s coat so tightly that I couldn’t pull him away.

Seeing that, a soft, affectionate smile appeared on Kash’s face.

He looked proud of his son.

He walked ahead of me to Colin’s bedroom, and I followed quietly.

Once he laid Colin down, my boy finally loosened his grip.

Kash covered him with a blanket and turned to look at me.

Neither of us said a word. Then he walked past me and left the room.

Instead of going out, he sat down beside Amy.

"Come here," he told her, holding out his hand and gesturing for Scarlett to leave them alone.

As soon as Scarlett walked away, Kash lifted Amy and settled her on his thigh.

"Daddy, what happened to Colin?" Amy asked softly.

That was when my mother gestured from across the room for me to join them.

She was clearly preparing to be part of it too, just to make sure the next part of her plan was set in motion.

The next part of her plan. I didn’t even know what it was going to be.
