After a long wait, the red alert light on the operating room door finally went out. The metal door of the operating room slowly opened, and Klausβs breath froze. He did not know whether the opening of the door brought him good or bad news.
The male doctor whose collar he had just seized stepped out from behind the operating-room door, and, taking off his mask, his slightly weary gaze fell upon Klaus.
Klaus walked quickly over to the doctor, "Howβs my mate and baby? " His voice was low and strained.
At that moment Adam came along. Cautiously and with a hint of anticipation, he asked, "Are the mate and baby safe?"
"The mother is fine. " The doctor said, "The babyββ"
"What happened to the baby? " Klaus asked impatiently.
" Klaus, let the doctor finish." advised Adam, in a low voice, and then he put his body between Klaus and the doctor in case Klaus got rough with the doctor.
" The baby was born with an infection and we need to put him in an incubator for now to treat it." The doctor replied calmly, " But donβt worry, weβre sure the baby will recover after some time."
"Are you sure? " Klaus stared at the doctor with both eyes, he needed a clear answer.
"Yes."
The doctorβs affirmative words at that moment relieved Klausβs hanging heart at last. Adam breathed a deep sigh of relief as he folded his hands together, " Thank you Luna for your blessings."
Klaus burst into tears of joy. Emily is fine and the baby is alive. He really could not imagine how devastated he would be if he lost one of them.
Soon, several nurses emerged from the operating room pushing a mobile hospital bed. They wheeled Emily into the hospital room. Klaus and Adam followed close behind.
Emily was lying in a hospital bed, her face pale. She opened her eyes with difficulty, her gaze searching somewhat vacantly for something.
"Iβm here, lover. " Klaus stood next to the hospital bed, he held Emilyβs hand tightly.
" Klaus... " Emily asked in a weak voice, "Whereβs the baby?"
"The doctor said the baby needs to be treated. " Klaus reassured her, "Donβt worry, he will recover soon."
"Really?"
"Yes, our son will be fine." Klaus rested his head on Emilyβs forehead, hoping in this way to soothe her.
" Are you hurt?" Emilyβs eyes filled with heartache as she watched the fire burn on Klaus.
" Iβm fine." Klaus stroked Emilyβs hair as he gazed deeply into her, " This wound is nothing to me."
"You need to treat the wound. " Emily worried," otherwise your wound will get infected."
"But I want to be here with you."
" Klaus." Adam, who was standing by, said, "Emily is right, you need to get your wounds taken care of. Donβt worry, Iβll be here with Emily."
Klaus gave a look of hesitation, though he did not for a moment wish to leave Emily. But now, with his clothes torn by the fire and covered in smoke, it did not seem right that he should remain in the hospital room in his condition.
" Klaus, Iβm fine." Emily said softly," Will you go ahead and take care of the wound?"
Klaus nodded, " Iβll be right back."
Then he turned to Adam, " Please take care of Emily."
Adam pats Klaus on the shoulder, " Of course, sheβs my sister. Iβll take care of her."
Klaus kissed Emily on the forehead and reluctantly left the hospital room.
While Klaus was in the treatment room getting his wounds dressed, Marx called him.
" Hey bro. Are Emily and the baby doing well? " Marx asked with concern.
" Yeah. Theyβre both fine. " Klaus leaned back in his chair tiredly as the nurse was disinfecting his wounds with sterile cotton.
" Thatβs wonderful to hear." Marxβs tone seemed slightly agitated.
" Did you find Emilyβs kidnapper?" Klaus asked.
If they found the damned murderer, he swore he would rip the bastardβs head off himself.
" Yes. A woman with white hair." Marx said, " While we were chasing the woman, she accidentally fell off a cliff. The pursuit team later found the womanβs body at the bottom of the cliff."
" Sheβs dead?"
" Yes."
Klaus swore that the woman had died so easily. If she had lived, if she had only been breathing. He would have made her life a living hell.
"Howβs Dolly? " Klaus asked.
"Sheβs much better now. " Marx replied, "but Iβm afraid she canβt visit Emily in the hospital just yet."
"Thatβs okay. " Klaus said, "Say sorry to Dolly for me. I shouldnβt have yelled at her when she was hurt."
"Okay, Iβll pass your words on to Dolly."
Marx said, and hung up. By now the nurse had bandaged Klausβs wound. Just as Klaus was about to leave, the doctor came up to him.
Doctors told Klaus he could visit the baby outside the neonatal unit. Klaus followed the doctor with great excitement to the babyβs room. As he stood outside the glass window, the doctor pointed to a baby boy with a blue bracelet on his wrist and told Klaus that the infant was his son.
Klaus gazed at the infant lying in the incubator, the warm yellow light falling softly on its pink skin, its eyes closed, its face slightly flushed, its fine downy hair hidden under a halo of light, its chest gently rising and falling with every tiny breath.
"Oh, thatβs my boy. " Klaus murmured softly. A smile of pleasure stole slowly across his lips.
For a long time he stood there, the tears gradually obscuring his eyes.β
.................. One month later
The cries from the nursery next door woke Emily, who was asleep, and she opened her eyes subconsciously before she stiffened up.
As a new mom, Emily lacked experience in child care. She had already felt the hardships of motherhood by the mere act of caring for an infant. Fortunately Mrs. Bauersometimes came to help her with the baby, or she would have really broken down.
As Emily reached the nursery door, she heard a low humming sound from within. The sound, like the softest breeze of a summerβs day, passed through the doorway and crept lazily into her ear with a different kind of tenderness and depth of feeling.
So she gently pushed open the door of the room, and there met her gaze the upright, intent back of Klaus.
Klausβs hands were extremely dexterous in carrying the infant, which was wrapped in soft swaddling clothes. Gently swaying to the rhythm, he lowered his voice and hummed the familiar childrenβs song. The low, mellow voice, now subdued from its former harshness and calmness, became a hot spring, bubbling with love and affection. Notes skip through the air, interweaving, weaving a dreamy network of guardians.
The early morning light streamed in through the windows, and made a hazy golden outline for Klaus. His head was bowed, and the lines on one side of his face were softened by the caress of light and shade. His gaze on the infant was full of love.
When the baby falls asleep, Klaus gently lays it down in the crib. One hand rested on the edge of the crib, and his downcast gaze always rested upon the sleeping infant.
Suddenly, like a flash of lightning, memories that had been lost flashed back to Emily. Their first encounter, their first kiss, all those memories of their time together came back to her.
Tears instantly filled Emilyβs eyes as she took a step behind Klaus, then reached out and clasped him. Silent tears soaked the back of Klausβ shirt.
" Klaus." Emily choked out, " When itβs fall, will you take me to see the maple leaves?"
Klausβs body stiffened, and after a moment he slowly turned to face Emily. His eyes were filled with a sense of lost and found joy.
Klaus cupped Emilyβs cheek as he gazed at her, his voice trembled a little from excitement, " Yes. Not only will I take you to see the maple leaves, but I will take you to see the most beautiful blue roses in the world in the spring, and I will take you out to sea in the summer to see the pink dolphins. From this moment on, I want the memories of the rest of your life to be about me."
" I love you, lover."
He bent his head and kissed Emily on the lips. His kisses were as strong and hot as ever.
