Chapter 187: Hell fire

Riven looked at the smile on Lucifer’s face, and it made his heart unsettled. He could tell that Lucifer was trying to manipulate him somehow, but he didn’t have a choice, he had to do what it took to save Noel.

"Fine, tell me the price," Riven said.

"Hmm, that’s better. Well, the price is simple. Allow me to become your Patron, and the same way Lumis gave Lance her power, I’ll give you some of mine, and it will help you defeat the demons.

But there exist many drawbacks to using my powers. Whenever you use it, you destroy your own life force, and if you overuse it, you’ll probably die.

Every time that you use it, you stand the risk of dying, but this power will allow you to go beyond whatever limits you have," Lucifer said.

Riven furrowed his brow.

"And why give me all that power? What do you gain?" Riven asked.

"What I’ll gain? Nothing much aside from the fact that you’ll defeat the demons. That’s all I need from you. The power that you gain is without any hidden reason," Lucifer said and sipped his tea.

"So if I take your power, that’s all?" Riven asked to reconfirm.

"Yes. I know it seems like a trick, but honestly, the risk of the devils from another world coming here is far too great, and I need someone to make sure the devils never come.

You have already met one devil, a low-rank Beletrex from that world that Luke called into himself. That’s one of their weakest devils, and its strength is already that great.

So you understand the risk of them coming here is far, far too great," Lucifer said.

"I see, that’s fine then. If doing this will ensure that Noel comes back alive, then I’ll do it," Riven said.

"Great, but I should tell you this little detail—the power I will give to you is called Hellfire. It fits you as a user of flames.

But Hellfire is a very dangerous flame, used only by people who are practically immortal, because only through that way will one be able to carry the flames without it destroying you as well.

I already told you that the power will slowly eat away your life force, but it will also burn you. The flames will attach to you, and it will hurt.

That’s the price that comes with a mortal using Hellfire," Lucifer said.

"So your power is a two-edged sword. I understand," Riven said.

"That’s the worst of it. But there is also one last thing, the flames will burn your emotions and desires. The more you use the flames, the more your emotions get burnt out.

And if you continue with it, you’ll probably lose all your emotions and desires at one point," Lucifer said.

"I feel that should have been the first thing you told me," Riven said.

"So is that a deal breaker for you?" Lucifer asked.

"No. I’m going ahead with it. If that’s what it takes for Noel to be alive, then that’s fine by me. Just do what you need to and bring him back," Riven said.

"Hmm, you’re really determined to bring your brother back. I respect that," Lucifer said. He snapped his finger. "That should be enough. Your brother’s soul will be returning to his body now.

You, on the other hand, you’ll sign this," Lucifer said, and a long piece of paper formed with a lot of writing.

"This is the contract that states you’ll have to defeat the demons and that’s all. Sign it with your blood, and that’s all," Lucifer said.

Riven looked at the contract. He read the contents, and there was nothing hidden. He bit into his finger and allowed a drop of blood to fall on the paper.

"The contract is signed now. When you wake up, you’ll feel the power of Hellfire inside of you. There is also a gift I have prepared for you—a Hellhound. Summon it with a thought when you wake up. It’s a gift from me to you," Lucifer said.

"You’re doing a lot for me. Makes me wonder if you really are a devil. But regardless, I’ll keep my side of the deal and make sure that the demons are destroyed," Riven said.

"Good. Because if you fail, your soul, along with that of Noel, will be pulled to Hell. His life depends on you now," Lucifer said. He raised his finger and was about to snap.

"Wait, do you know who Frozen Fish is?" Riven asked.

"Frozen Fish? I don’t know who that is," Lucifer replied immediately and snapped his finger. Riven vanished immediately, leaving Lucifer standing there.

"How did he know about Frozen Fish? Something is off," Lucifer muttered after Riven left. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖

[.....]

Lance walked through the forest. The smile on his face refused to leave even after minutes of killing Riven.

Suddenly, the bush shook. His eyes shot in that direction. He looked, wanting to see what was there.

Robert walked out, followed by the rest of the top ten, aside from Chloe, Sofia, and the elf twins.

The moment Robert laid his eyes on Lance, he stopped. They locked eyes for a few seconds, and the air already became tense.

"Lance, where is Riven and Noel?" Robert asked, his eyes narrowing into slits.

Lance paused. He started racking his mind for a good response. "I’m sorry, but the both of them died at the hands of the monster that is ravaging the forest.

Riven tried his best, but he couldn’t survive it. He and Noel gave their best for me to survive," Lance said, and immediately, everyone went silent.

"Don’t give me that bullshit," Mia said. She gritted her teeth and clenched her fists. She looked Lance in the eyes.

"Where is Riven? Tell me now, or I swear to the goddess I’ll cut off your head and hang it on a spike," she said, her voice already bubbling with rage.

"I said he die—"

"Don’t give us that crap!" Liana interrupted. She pointed her sword at Lance.

"You are standing here. You faced a massive monster together, and yet you are unharmed. You’re standing, and there are no signs that you battled it.

So tell me why I would believe that Riven fought and died? Don’t give us any more crap. Tell us where Riven is," Liana said, her voice getting sharper.

"Why won’t you believe me?" Lance asked.

"Because you are saying that two of our classmates have died," Jack said. He stepped forward. "You are telling us that Riven let you go and allowed his brother to die," Jack said.

"Lance, what you’re saying makes no sense. Riven is a good soul, but he would rather have saved his brother Noel than allow him to die and you escape. So please, tell us what happened to Riven?" Robert asked.

Lance frowned. He looked at them with anger in his eyes. His veins bulged. "Why won’t you all believe me? It’s like nothing I say gets to you all. It’s like my words have no weight.

Is all that matters to all of you Riven? Is he that important that you can’t all see past him?" Lance asked.

"Lance, shut your mouth. I swear I’ll kill you. I’ll kill you if you don’t tell me where he is. Tell me now," Mia roared. She took a step forward, her sword in hand already, ready to fight.

Lance frowned. He looked her in the eyes. "I have nothing else to tell you. Riven is dead. He was killed by the monster," Lance said and pulled his sword. "You can either believe me or let it be," Lance said.

"Stop fucking around, Lance. Stop it!" Robert yelled.

But Lance was unfazed. He looked at them, about to say the same thing he had been saying before.

But suddenly, a tendril shot through the forest for Lance. He spun around to cut through it, but the strength behind the tendril was too much—it slammed into the sword and sent him flying into trees.

"Get ready to fight!" Robert yelled and pulled his sword. Everyone watched quietly. Tensions were high. Their hearts beat faster. They tried to use all their senses to know where the next attack would come from.

A few seconds after the first attack, Beletrex finally came out of the forest, his tendrils flailing in all directions. He was the being of nightmares.

Everyone subconsciously took a step back when they saw Beletrex. Fear gripped them. They couldn’t even move forward. Their hearts clenched hard. Sweat trickled down their bodies as they watched it.

Beletrex raised one hand, and a fireball formed above it, black flames, increasing in size until it was a meter large. He hurled the fireball at them.

Robert gritted his teeth. He gripped his sword hard and forced himself to swing. Blue flames exploded outward. He slashed through the black flames, and a massive explosion followed.
