Chapter 76: Mathias

"The matches will be two minutes long, and so when the timer hits zero, the top two performances will be the ones that pass. Else, the two that win will pass.

Now that you all know the basic rules, get up to the arena seats and wait for you to be called by your numbers," the man finished speaking, and immediately, their wrists started glowing with their numbers.

Riven lifted his hand up, and to his dismay, the number that showed there was number one.

"You have to be kidding me, I got number one?" he muttered under his breath. He already knew how this exam was set, and that was the fact that the two number ones would definitely be going up against the two two hundred and fifty right off the start.

’Sigh, I have to fight first now, then I’ll have to give it my all. This exam is not all about fighting, but also giving it your all, showing off just in case the time finishes. Your showing off will be what makes you pass.’

"What number did you get, bro?" Noel asked. He flashed his number in front of Riven as they went to sit down, and it was a number that sent chills down Riven’s spine: number two hundred and fifty.

’No, they did this on purpose. They want to set us against each other and see what happens. Shit, it couldn’t get worse than this,’ Riven cursed in his mind and showed his friend his number, then leaned in close.

"Noel, don’t ask me how I got the information, because I’m going to need you to trust in me right now. The first fight, it’s going to be me and someone versus you," Riven said.

Noel’s eyes widened when he realized the situation. This was very bad.

"You don’t need to worry though. All we have to do is show off and give our teammates the illusion that we are working together with them, while at the same time dragging the two minutes down," Riven said.

"The headmistress is sitting up in the stands. Do you think that we will be able to use acting to trick her eyes?" Noel asked.

"But we won’t be acting. We will be going at it with all our might. I’ll fight you with everything I have and you’ll fight me with everything you have. I’m sure we can last for two minutes.

What we have to ensure is that none of the other two actually win against each other, because if they do, they’ll come and fight me or you as well and throw the plan off.

So if you notice my teammate about to finish off your teammate, move in quick and help," Riven explained.

"I see. Your plan is simple yet crazy. Hopefully, it works, because we have to get into the academy to get her," Noel said.

They both made it to the stands and sat down. Riven glanced up at the VIP seats and saw the headmistress seated there, sipping wine from a glass.

As if she knew he was looking at her, she turned her head and their eyes met for a second before he tore away from the gaze.

She stared at him for a while, her finger tapping the glass. "He was the one that they said led the wyvern out of the dungeon, wasn’t he?

Did he know what he did, or was it a fluke during an escape? Either way, I need to watch him a little bit and see," she said.

After talking about Riven, she recalled she had to make some urgent calls, so she took out a metal cube with runes on it and placed it on the table. She used mana to activate it and then spoke:

"Contact Pedro," she calmly said. The cube shined and then the hologram of a middle-aged man in what seemed like black religious robes with gold trims showed up. His hair was cut into a short buzz cut, his eyes lifeless, yet there was a smile on his face.

"Pedro, the servant of the goddess Lumis, is here to serve you. What do I owe this call?" he spoke.

"Oh, cut the holy bullshit, Pedro. It’s me," she said in a snappy tone.

"Arghh, can’t you allow me do my job properly, Elena?" Pedro complained. He pinched the bridge of his nose as he spoke.

"Sadly, I’ll be needing you to do your other job a bit for me. You don’t have to worry as the rewards will be massive.

You have ears all around, so I already know that you know a candidate by the name of William used some sort of blood necromancy to summon a wyvern.

The academy and the Royal Family have already kicked off proper investigations, but the things I was allowed to do were very, very limited due to the Royal Family having a hand in the investigation," she said and picked up her wine glass. She twirled the wine about in the glass. fгeewebnovёl.com

"So you want me to carry out a hidden investigation on the sort of magic that the boy used and give it to you?" he asked.

"Exactly. You know my obsession with magic. I want to research it, see how it works, and maybe even manage to control it," she said. Her eyes shined with a strange light and a creepy smile formed on her face.

"Sheesh, you only get like this when talking about magic. You really need to get other hobbies," Pedro said.

"That’s none of your business. Just get me what I need and a handsome reward is waiting for you at the end," she said and disconnected with a touch to the cube. She picked it up and placed it in her ring before turning her eyes back to the arena. The matches would soon start. She needed to observe.

At the other side of the call that had just ended, Pedro sat at his wooden table with his cube there as well. He picked it up, tossed it into the air, caught it, and then placed it into his ring.

"That woman is crazy," he muttered, then looked up at the ceiling of the dimly lit office. "Shadow, find me all there is to know about the wyvern incident," he said casually. There was a flicker in the shadows and nothing else.

Back in the arena, the instructor took the center, holding a sheet of paper in his hands. He looked up at the candidates sitting in the stands.

"The first fight for today will be number one versus number two hundred and fifty. Please make your way to the arena. You will have two minutes to ask yourselves about your ability and make a quick plan to aid you."

Riven and Noel got up and walked down to the arena. Noel walked across while Riven stood at the other side.

"Hey, partner!" A young boy Riven’s age ran up to him, an innocent smile on his face. He was in simple shabby armor, and that meant he was probably a commoner.

He got to Riven and stretched out his hand to Riven for a handshake. Riven slowly lifted his hand and grabbed the boy’s hand. He looked into the boy’s eyes. There was an innocent happiness that shined brightly inside this boy.

His hair was black and messy, yet it couldn’t hide his naturally cute face and soft features that almost made him look like a girl.

"My name is Mathias, you?" he asked.

Riven paused when he heard that name, because he knew who Mathias was. He was a master swordsman that rose quietly from the shadows and only became a major character after a massive war later in the future.

After that, he became a well-known sword master and led many battles for Vermillion.

’I’m standing with one of the important characters of the story, and in order to push my own agenda, I must destroy the future for Mathias.

Shit, I didn’t think something like this would happen. If I carry out my plan, there will be no Mathias, no warrior that changed the tides of the demon wars.’

Right now, Riven was faced with the decision of allowing the story to progress the way it was meant to, or to totally shit on the author with complete sabotage.

’I’m sorry, Mathias. I have no choice. I can’t take a step back for you to shine. I have a journey to complete as well, Riven thought.’

"My name is Riven Grave," he said, shaking the hand.

"You’re a noble. That’s cool. I’m a commoner. If I get into this academy, I’ll finally be able to make my family better and happy. That’s my reason for doing all this," he said.

’Sigh, the more he talks, the more this hurts. I’ll be destroying not just his dream, but that of his family as well. I didn’t think about things like this when I started this journey. My presence here is going to be the source of pain for many.’
