Chapter 66: The Origin Story.

Kenji and Haruka followed Evelyn into the room. The moment they arrived inside, try were both quiet suprised at the modesty of this place.

They were both expecting it to look like some kind of old mysterious chamber filled with floating books and mysterious antiques.

But unlike their thoughts, the place only had four chairs, a desk, a small book shelf, and another crystal ball thingy.

* What the hell is it with this world and crystal balls!* Kenji thought, slightly frustrated by the sight of the crystal ball.

But then again, you couldn’t blame him, he hasn’t really had any fond memories of interacting with a crystal ball.

" Please, sit," Evelyn gestured for the two to have a sit on one of the chairs across her desk, while she took her sit right across them.

Immediately they were all seated, the librarian’s face turned deadly serious, her sudden change of countenance suprised the duo.

" Is there something wrong?" Kenji questioned, noticing her change of expression.

" You asked about the crimson veil right?" Evelyn started, her voice heavy, as it seemed to pierce through the tense silence in the room.

Kenji nodded without speaking a word, he decided that in a situation like this, silence would be best.

Haruka on the other hand had nothing to say, so just like Kenji, she stayed quiet and decided to listen to what Evelyn has to say.

" The crimson veil isn’t just some random cult group running amock the city. As much as it looks like their all amateurs, they’re very formidable and calculative, even holding power in governmental positions and knight order," she then passed, allowing Kenji to slowly digest this information.

" So they’re like a group of bandits that have infiltrated the government and bribed the knight order?"

" No! Absolutely not! They do not bribe anyone!" Evelyn suddenly said in an annoyed tone, almost as if Kenji had just spoken about her.

The duo were a bit shocked by Evelyn’s sudden outburst, but decide not to say anything, only keeping on a look of confusion and intruige.

Seeing that she had over reacted, she quickly composed herself and continued solemnly," look, the crimson veil was actually not as bad as you might think, at least not as they are now,"

" What do you mean by that? Are you saying that they’re like some kind of saint that fell and became corrupted?" Kenji asked in confusion. He had just thought of describing it like that because he remembered that there was a religion back on Earth that believed in some kind of supreme being and fallen angel. Stuff like that at least.

" Yes, think of them as a saint that became" corrupted"," Evelyn said, confirming Kenji’s words.

" Really? Well how did that happen?" This time, Haruka was the one to have spoken, as she suddenly became deeply intruiged by this sudden twist.

She had come here to find out about her bloodline, what she wasn’t expecting was that she would face off against a notorious cult group and still learn a cool spooky story about them.

Today seemed to be a whirlwind of plot twists!

And she loved it!

" If we’re going to talk about that, then we’ll have to go back in time. Back to when it all began. The days of the gods!"

Hearing this suspenseful intro, Kenji and Haruka immediately sat right up, not wanting to miss a word she was about to say.

" About a hundred and seventy years ago, there were three great friends who stood at the Pinnacle of power. They governed the human world with both a soft hand and an iron fist,"

" They were the greatest leaders ever known to mankind, and the best of friends. The three were born with extraordinary powers. One that surpassed the S rank...the legenday SS rank,"

" Due to this, they saw themselves as Gods. The ones who were meant to protect the humans and keep balance amongst them. But then something went terribly wrong,"

" One of them had the powers to look at someone and find out their sins compared to their virtues. Like a scale, weighing which was heavier,"

" When he saw this, he and his two friends created a force...a secret force that would become their emissary and kill the bandits and sinners of the world. They were called: The Crimson Veil,"

" But something had changed. He had seen too much—too many lies, too much corruption. To many sins, and that changed him. At first, he only wanted justice. Then, justice became judgment. And judgment became annihilation. He called for a meeting with his other two friends, and launched an attack on them, hoping to kill them. But the two seemed ready, as they escaped the attack and fought back," 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶

" When they called for the help of the crimson veil squad, they realized that their emissaries had all sided with the traitor,"

" Luckily enough, the two were still strong, and were able to fend of the attacks for a while, but eventually had to flee,"

" After his former friends fled, he made the crimson veil go out on a killing spree and wipe out all of the true sinners. Those who sins overweighted their good,"

" And just like that. The squad everyone once trusted had turned against them. They no longer helped beat dungeons and fend off bandits, but instead killed their own people,"

" The human race was in despair, and soon, three kingdoms from the human race fell, with only nine left. But he was still not satisfied,"

" He decided that he would kill everyone. Good or bad, young or old, selfish or kind. They would all die, so that he, the judge could burn the world to ashes, and from the ashes, just like a phoenix, he would raise the human empire once more and bring in an era of no sinners. He called himself a judge and a God. The Ashen god!"

" Knowing his plan, his two friends who had once fled came back to challenge him. They fought for three days and three nights,"

" But eventually, they won. But they couldn’t kill him entirely as they still saw him as a friend. So they destroyed his body, and kept his soul in a dungeon. Along with his death, the crimson veil soon became a legend. Until ten years ago, when an uproar of a group of cultist causing trouble arrived, "

Hiss!

Kenji and Haruka sucked I cold breath as they heard all of this. They couldn’t believe that the crimson veil had such a deep backstory.

This really opened his eyes.

" So you’re saying that they don’t just want full control, but a large scale destruction, one that could eliminate all," Kenji said solemnly.

" No, they don’t just want destruction, they want rebirth. They believe that if they could break a few chains, sacrifice a few lives and awaken their God, the world would become a better place, " Evelyn’s words hit like a dagger to a soul. If a random man had heard what she said, they would have probably fainted out of fright.

But Kenji was no ordinary man, nor was Haruka. They were both evolved.

" So then what happens to the rest of us. The non-believers? Or should I say, sinners?" Kenji asked with a grave voice, his heart feeling like it was about to burst out of his chest.

" Well, you won’t exist in their world,"

°°°°°

Silence scoured the entire room, as Kenji’s palms had already dig deep into the wooden armrest.

Haruka’s face held onto a bit of fright, but she tried her best to hide it.

The only one unfazed was Evelyn, as all she did was stare at them, wanting to know their next move.

She saw life as a game of chess, one where only a true mastermind could win, and that mastermind was definitely the crimson veil.

But this young man in front of her made her now see different. As much as he looked ordinary, he seemed to have gone through a lot, and she believes only those who had gone through a thousand tribulations, that can change the world and turn the table.

Right now, Kenji was the only one she felt could do so. She didn’t know why. Maybe it was because of the Phoenix in his head silently watching everything, or the rare cloud moon fox.

Heck!

It could even be his handsome face, but still, there was something still drawing her trust towards this man, and she couldn’t explain it.

For the first time in her life, she felt.... conflicted.

" We have to fight them," Kenji said, his words hitting the others like a bombshell in a quiet dessert.

" You what?" The two women said simultaneously, as if they had heard the craziest thing ever.

Kenji slowly released his hand from the arm rest. He was sure that if the chair was alive, it would thank it’s stars Kenji no longer held it so thight anymore.

" Yes, we have to fight them. As crazy as it may seem, it’s the only way. If not, we’re all just waiting for an inevitable death!"

" We truly would no longer exist,"
