Chapter 68 - 68

The next morning, Miss Yoshida yawned, dark circles under her eyes, and walked out of her room.

Because of what had happened, she hadn't been able to sleep well last night.

She got up and walked towards the kitchen, intending to have a cup of instant noodles for breakfast to get through the difficult morning.

Although she had returned with Kitahara Kosuke, she couldn't directly sever ties with her family after all.

Also, she still hadn't figured out how she should face her family.

Then, the girl saw a plate, a fork... and a small bowl conspicuously placed on the redwood table.

"Omelette rice..."

The golden yellow egg completely wrapped the rice inside, but the ketchup on top was a bit too much for Miss Yoshida's personal preference.

And in the small bowl next to it was miso soup made by stewing fish, radish, and seaweed together.

"I made an extra portion just in case. I don't know what time you'll get up. If it gets cold, just heat it up in the microwave."

Underneath the plate was a piece of white paper torn from a notebook, with these words written neatly.

She reached out and touched the edge of the plate; it was still warm.

Without refusing the other person's kindness, she sat down directly.

Having not slept well all night, she actually felt a bit hungry.

Using her chopsticks, she parted the golden yellow surface and evenly scooped up the egg and rice coated in ketchup, putting it into her mouth. "Hmm... delicious."

Saki's pupils slightly dilated.

The inside wrapped in egg didn't seem to be rice made in the usual way. A sweet taste similar to cream rice spread in her mouth.

Moreover, the rice also contained something crunchy like beans, she didn't know what kind of ingredient it was, which added to the texture when chewing.

Although it wasn't as delicious as it would have been when freshly made because it had cooled down a bit, it still received a very high evaluation in Miss Yoshida's heart.

She quickly finished most of the food.

"Speaking of which, I'll be living with Kitahara-kun from today on..."

"Wait, isn't this just cohabitation?!"

Realizing the crucial point, Saki thought of the terrible phone call she had with the landlady of this house yesterday...

She accidentally choked.

She kept patting her chest with her hand and finally caught her breath.

Then, in one gulp, she finished every last drop of the miso soup in the bowl, finally getting rid of that almost suffocating feeling.

After clearing the dishes from the table.

After all this fuss, Saki felt warm all over. She rested her head on her arms, lying on the table in a daze.

Turning her face sideways, she looked at the note Kosuke had left for her.

"Kitahara-kun, what is he doing now..."

Saki couldn't help but think this in her heart.

...

Kitahara Kosuke had gotten up very early today.

It wasn't because he had a date with a girl, nor was there any other special reason.

Today was the weekend, the day he had agreed to go to the fortune teller's place to learn from the old woman.

But after arriving at the location, he found the fortune teller's shop door locked tightly.

"That's odd. Normally, the shop should be open by now..."

Kousuke lightly stroked his chin as he paced back and forth in front of the store, clearly puzzled.

"Could something have happened at her home?"

He didnt even consider the possibility that the old woman had run off after taking his money.

Partly because 100,000 yen wasnt exactly enough to skip town with, and also because he trusted his own judgment he didnt believe she was that kind of person.

And he was right.

"Ah! Kousuke, over here over here!"

Easily spotting his tall figure among the passing pedestrians, a young woman in an apron with a ponytail called out to him from across the street.

"Good morning, Auntie."

The womans name was Hanoka Yasuko, and she looked to be in her 30s. Her face still showed traces of the beauty she had in her youth.

She used to work as a hostess in a sake bar, but now she supported her middle school daughter on her own by selling bento lunches.

Life wasnt easy for her.

Back when Kousuke was in middle school, he used to buy lunchboxes here oftenas a way to support the kind womans business.

"Actually, something happened at the shrine keepers home. Shes closed the shop for several days now."

"Also, she left this behind and told me to give it to you."

As she spoke, Auntie Yasuko pulled out a black box about the size of an A4 sheet from the back of her shop.

"And heres her contact number."

She also gave Kousuke the phone number the old woman had left.

He took the items from her, opened the box, and found a notebook along with several odd trinkets inside.

Rather than inspecting them right away, he turned back to the woman to ask:

"Do you know what happened at her home?"

Kousuke was genuinely concerned.

"No idea..."

After thinking for a moment, Yasuko couldnt recall anything unusual.

Just then, a customer entered the store to browse the bento. Kousuke recognized himit was a teacher from a nearby high school.

"Every family has its own troubles, huh..."

Thinking that to himself, Kousuke moved further inside so he wouldnt get in the way of other customers.

He pulled out the black notebook from the box, gave it a quick glance, and decided to hold off on contacting the old woman for now.

He wasnt some kind of savior his abilities were limited.

The best he could do now was not bother others unnecessarily.

"Kousuke-niisan, would you like a bento?"

A bright, hopeful voice suddenly chimed in from behind. It was Auntie Yasukos daughter, Hanoka Misato, a cheerful middle schooler.

Big, bright eyes, thin lips, a clean face full of youthful collagen, and slightly shoulder-length smooth hair gave the girl a faint charm beyond her years.

A cute little thing.

"Ah... sorry, I was planning to cook lunch at home today..."

He wanted to accept, but after patting his pocket, Kousuke realized he couldnt. So he replied with a regretful tone.

If this had been yesterday, he definitely would have supported the mother-daughters business.

But now, money was tight.

"I see... just a moment, then."

Misato didnt show a hint of disappointment. In fact, she looked quite pleased as she turned and walked back into the shop.

Soon, she returned carrying a generously portioned bento box packed with meat.

"This is Misato's Special Super-Size Edition, just for you."

"Eh?"

"Its free. A thank-you gift for chasing away that guy. I made it myself, so no turning it down!"

The "guy" she mentioned was her mothers ex-husband.

A complete scumbag who not only failed to pay a single yen in child support but also frequently came around harassing her mother for money.

The girl was deeply grateful to this "cool big brother" who had once stepped in to help them out.

She forced the bento into his hands, not taking no for an answer.

Seeing Kousuke accept it with a helpless smile, Misato beamed with pride, mentally striking a victory pose.
