Chapter 208: Chapter 187: Wataru Playing Dragon Quest
Saturday, February 22, 1992
Wataru, a high schooler and Endo's friend, loved playing ZEPS but had always struggled to find a genre that truly resonated with him. He wanted to be a hero—wielding a sword and shield, battling monsters, and embarking on epic quests. So when he saw the box art and promotional materials for Dragon Quest, he knew this was the game for him. Without hesitation, he bought a copy, completely ignoring the hype surrounding RC Pro-Am, which was gaining attention due to its new ZEPS 4 Score accessory that allowed four-player gameplay. None of that mattered to Wataru—what he wanted was adventure.
"Heheh, I can't wait to be a hero! The main character of this game will be a hero, right?!" Overcome with excitement, he sprinted home, eager to begin his journey.
Once home, he wasted no time turning on his ZEPS console. As he unboxed Dragon Quest, he found the usual contents inside:
Game cartridgeZeps Volume 6, listing all ZAGE releases so farGame manualA black-and-gray Z Card with a cryptic message on the back
"I'm in one of the caves. Find me, and I'll give you a lesson."
Wataru chuckled. "Heh, so Zabo-Man is hidden in some cave as a secret boss now? It's been a while since he played an antagonist."
With that, he started the game, and the screen displayed the opening sequence.
The Beginning of the Journey
As he began his adventure, he was pleasantly surprised to find that he could name the main character. With a grin, he typed in "Wataru" and smirked. "Hehehe, I'm the hero now!"
The screen then transitioned to an 8-bit cutscene. The game opened in Tantegel Castle, where the King summoned the protagonist—revealing that he was the descendant of the legendary hero Erdrick. The land of Alefgard was in peril; the Dragonlord had stolen the Ball of Light and kidnapped Princess Gwaelin. It was Wataru's mission to defeat the Dragonlord, rescue the princess, and restore peace to the world.
The King spoke:
"Welcome, brave one. I am the King of this land. Long ago, a great hero named Erdrick saved our world. You are his descendant, and I have summoned you to save us once more."
"The Dragonlord has stolen the sacred artifact, the Ball of Light, and kidnapped Princess Gwaelin. You must defeat him and restore peace."
"Take anything you find here that may aid your journey."
Wataru was thrilled. He was officially a hero now! Without hesitation, he explored the castle and opened nearby chests, obtaining an Iron Sword and a Torch. Curious, he opened the menu and inspected the items:
Iron Sword: +5 Damage, a normal sword.Torch: Helps see in dark places.
Zaboru had made significant improvements to Dragon Quest based on his knowledge of RPG design from his past life. One of the most frustrating mechanics in the original was the need to press a button for every action—opening doors, descending stairs, or even speaking to NPCs required extra input. He streamlined these interactions, making them automatic. Now, players could seamlessly enter buildings, climb stairs, and engage in conversations simply by walking into the relevant areas as for conversation they just need press X button to converse. This small yet effective change improved the pacing of the game, making it feel far more fluid and modern compared to the original Dragon Quest from Zaboru previous life.
After exploring the castle, Wataru finally stepped outside into the world of Alefgard.
Heading towards Brecconary Town, located to the left of Tantegel Castle, Wataru was suddenly interrupted—the screen changed, and the music shifted.
"A Red Slime attacks you!"
A battle menu appeared with the following options: Attack, Defend, Spell, Run, Item.
"Huh? What's this?" Wataru murmured. He chose Attack, and the screen displayed:
"Wataru attacks the Red Slime! It deals 4 damage!"
Now, it was the enemy's turn.
"Red Slime attacks Wataru! It deals 1 damage!"
His health decreased slightly. "Ohh, so the combat is turn-based? Interesting!"

He attacked again, defeating the slime.
"Wataru defeats the Red Slime! Gained 4 EXP! 16 more EXP to level up!"
Wataru's eyes lit up. "Oh! So I need 16 more EXP? That means I have to defeat four more slimes... Hehehe, let's grind!"
Wataru happily farmed Red Slimes, quickly leveling up to Level 3 from level 2 to level 3 need 32 Exp. Occasionally, the slimes dropped Slime Jelly, a consumable that restored health. As he continued fighting, he began to wonder if there were stronger enemies.
Venturing farther from Tantegel Castle, he noticed the terrain becoming rocky. Suddenly, he stumbled upon a hidden cave!
Just as he prepared to enter, he was attacked by a Desert Armor Scorpion—a much stronger enemy.
"Desert Armor Scorpion attacks! Wataru takes 23 damage!"
One hit. Instant defeat.
"What the hell?! That thing is way too strong! Maybe this area is for higher levels?" He sighed, realizing he needed to explore more cautiously. "Alright, let's check out other places before I rush into danger again." Then the Wataru character respawn in the king chamber, the starting point of the game.
Deciding to stick to safer areas, he entered Brecconary Town. The town was filled with NPCs, shops, and a healing spot. He visited the weapon shop and browsed the available equipment.
After checking his finances, he could only afford the cheapest armor and shield, which he quickly purchased and equipped. But one item caught his eye—the Pure Steel Sword.
Pure Steel Sword: +25 DamagePrice: 1500 GoldCurrent Gold: 50
Wataru sighed. "1500 Gold?! The Red Slimes only drop 5 coins each! Ugh, I need to farm forever to get that sword!"
Determined, he returned to grinding, fighting slimes and occasionally encountering Drake Imps, slightly stronger enemies that drop 8-11 gold. With each battle, he became more invested in his adventure, determined to save up for the Pure Steel Sword and grow stronger.
He grinned. "Alright, let's do this! I`ll get that Sword for Sure!
