Chapter 215: Chapter 193: Sakaki Playing Alex Kidd In Miracle World

Monday, February 24, 1992

Sakaki was enjoying a rare day off. His boss, Toki-san, who ran Bakudan Arcade, had given him a break, and with no pressing college obligations—especially since he was close to graduating—he found himself with an entire day to relax. Despite working part-time at the arcade, his real dream was to work at ZAGE after graduation. After all, he had met Zaboru Renkonan, the owner of ZAGE, even if only briefly.

"I wonder if Zaboru even remembers me? We barely talked... Eh, whatever. I'll figure it out later. For now, let's check out Alex Kidd in Miracle World!"

He had met Zaboru back when he was Installing ZAS at Bakudan Arcade, but it had been a while since their last encounter.

Excited, Sakaki unboxed the game. Inside, as expected, were four items: the game cartridge, the manual, Zeps Volume 6, and the signature black and gray Z Card. The card had an intriguing message:

"Buy the Item, and I will challenge you."

Sakaki smirked. "Heh, so Zabo-Man is hidden in this game too? And I need to buy something to trigger the fight? Interesting..."

He inserted the cartridge and booted up the game. A charming 8-bit cutscene played, introducing the story. Alex Kidd, a young martial artist trained in the legendary Shellcore technique, had lived peacefully on Mt. Eternal until he learned that the kingdom of Radaxian had been invaded. The evil tyrant Janken the Great had seized control, kidnapping King Thunder, Prince Egle—Alex's long-lost brother—and Princess Lora. To restore peace, Alex had to travel across Miracle World, defeating Janken's henchmen along the way.

The title screen appeared, and Sakaki eagerly selected Start.

The game's energetic theme song kicked in as he took control of Alex. Right away, he noticed the game's unique mechanics. The perspective was different from most platformers—Alex moved in a more vertical fashion, descending cliffs and punching through obstacles. Enemies blocked his path, but with his powerful fists, he broke through them.

"So, it's not just jumping on enemies but actually fighting? That's pretty cool."

A moment later, he reached a body of water. He hesitated. "Am I gonna die if I jump in?" Bracing himself, he took the leap—only for Alex to start swimming effortlessly.

"Oh, nice! He can swim! That's unexpected!"

Sakaki continued, but he quickly realized something—this game wasn't easy. The controls felt slippery, and enemies moved unpredictably. He died a few times, misjudging jumps or getting hit by projectiles. Frustrated, but not discouraged, he pressed on. He had conquered plenty of ZEPS games before—this one wouldn't break him.

After multiple attempts, he reached the next stage: Lake Fathom. This area was an entirely underwater level, filled with octopuses and electric eels. The octopuses moved erratically, and the eels couldn't be attacked when they were charging up electricity.

"Aghhh! The octopus-eel combo is brutal! Damn it!"

Determined, he focused on avoiding rather than fighting, carefully weaving through the obstacles. After what felt like an eternity, he finally cleared the water section and arrived at a shop.

The shop had three items for sale:

Motorcycle – 150 gold'

Health Booster – 300 gold

Z Token – 2500 gold

Sakaki immediately noticed the Z Token. "That has to be the item for the Zabo-Man fight! But 2500 gold?! That's insane! I can't afford that yet."

For now, he settled on buying the motorcycle. As soon as he made the purchase, Alex Kidd hopped onto the bike and sped off, smashing through obstacles at high speed.

"Whoa! This completely changes the gameplay! This is awesome!"

Racing through the stage on the motorcycle was exhilarating, but it didn't last forever. Eventually, he reached a castle, where he would face his first boss.

"Finally! My first boss fight!"

Inside, he encountered Gooseka, one of Janken the Great's top henchmen. But instead of a traditional battle, the boss smugly declared:

"You dare challenge me? Let's settle this with a game of Janken!"

Sakaki blinked. "Huh? Janken? You mean... rock-paper-scissors?! The boss fight is Janken?! That's hilarious! Hahaha!"

The game transitioned into a Janken mini-game. Sakaki played carefully but ended up losing 2-1 to Gooseka. Suddenly, Alex Kidd turned to stone, and the game restarted from the last checkpoint.

"What the hell?! He's definitely cheating!"

Undeterred, Sakaki retried the fight. This time, he studied Gooseka's patterns, noticing slight delays before he made a move. Exploiting this, he countered effectively and won 3-0. With his defeat, Gooseka turned into stone, dropping a medallion as Alex Kidd claimed victory.

"Hah! Got you, you cheating bastard! This game is way more fun than I expected!"

"The game is definitely fun, and I love how there are swimming sections and a motorcycle segment—hahaha!"

With the medallion in hand, Sakaki continued forward, eager to see what awaited him next.
