Apocalypse: After Reanimation, I Became The Queen-Chapter 43: _ Stupid Cannibals
The woman snorts. "What do you think? You see a grocery store around here?"
Vic, despite his position, immediately protests. "Okay, hold on! First of all, gross. Second of all—meat goes bad after a while, dumbasses! You’re just asking for disease!"
The leader’s gun twitches toward him. "Do I look like I care about food safety?"
Trish grips her knife tighter, her stance getting even more alert like she’s a second away from making a move. I feel it too—that instinct to fight.
But then I look at the numbers. They have more weapons. More people. And Vic is still stuck in that damn trap.
I exhale, forcing myself and my voice to stay calm. "We’re not looking for trouble."
The leader arches a brow.
I keep going. "Right now? We all have a bigger problem. That sound back there? The zombies ran toward it. And whatever made that noise? If it’s bad enough to attract the undead, then we don’t have time for this bullshit."
The woman tilts her head. "You really expect us to believe..."
ROOOOOAAAARRR.
The sound rips through the night again. This time, it’s louder and closer. The trees shake. The ground vibrates And suddenly, the tension transitions.
For the first time, I see something flicker in their eyes. I know fear when I see it.
I take advantage of it.
"You hear that? It’s coming. And if you don’t let us go, you’re gonna be hanging from your own traps soon enough."
Vic, who is still upside down, weakly adds, "I’d rather not die like this, thanks."
The leader exhales through his nose, glancing at his people. They’re hesitating now and their confidence is cracking.
The roar echoes again and is even more close now. Oh, shit. We are all going to die at this rate all thanks to these stupid excuses for humans.
Then, we hear gunfire. It’s distant. Someone else is fighting something. And from the sheer volume of shots, it’s something bad.
Well, we are about to know the meaning of BAD if we don’t start running.
.
I swear, some people are allergic to survival.
We stand there, hands raised, surrounded by a bunch of half-starved lunatics who think people are a better meal than, I don’t know, literally anything else.
Vic is still hanging upside down like a caught fish, flailing and cussing as blood pools in his head, and instead of dealing with the very loud, very ominous thing in the woods, we’re stuck arguing with a bunch of brain-dead cannibals.
"Let us go," I try again, speaking slowly like I’m talking to children. "Whatever is coming is bad news. Worse than your little people traps."
The leader narrows his eyes. "You really expect us to believe that?"
"Yes," I say, exasperated. "Because it’s true."
The woman with him—the one who casually admitted to eating people, tilts her head. "Convenient, isn’t it? A scary sound in the woods just when we have you right where we want you?" She chuckles. "Nice try."
Oh, God. Why don’t the zombies eat the brain-dead ones first? Oh, I know; because they have no brains for the zombies to munch on!
"You think we made that noise?" I yell, violently shaking my head in frustration.
They really are grating on my nerves. We are just standing here and awaiting death. If they want to die, then fine but me and my people don’t want to be here to witness it.
We could have taken them all down if Vic wasn’t in that leveling position. Right now, Vic is the only level they have on us, and God help them, the only thing keeping them alive.
Benji groans, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Do we look like we have a goddamn sound system hidden in the trees? You think I pulled out my phone and hit ’Scary Growl.mp3’ for dramatic effect?"
The woman smirks. "You’d be surprised what people do to distract from their execution."
Vic, who is still upside down, yells, "What kind of dumbass plays the Call of Cthulhu soundtrack when they’re surrounded by people with guns?! How does that help us?!"
The leader shrugs. "Someone’s shooting. That’s one of ours. A warning shot to get us to back down."
Dom throws up his hands. "Oh, come on! If you had a guy out there, why the hell would they be wasting ammo shooting at something that isn’t us?"
The woman makes a tsk sound. "Because they knew you’d try to pull something."
I stare at them, trying to process the sheer level of stupidity we are dealing with. I can’t believe these are actual people. However, what do I expect from them when literally eat people like a pack of chips?
Trish sighs heavily, rubbing her temples. "This is painful. I am in pain trying to keep up with this logic."
Benji crosses his arms. "So let me get this straight. You think we staged the biggest, loudest, most inconvenient distraction in history while running for our goddamn lives just to avoid a fight with you?"
The leader shrugs. "Stranger things have happened."
"Yeah," I mutter. "Like people eating each other when literally everything else in the world is already trying to eat them. Trust me, we can take you all down if we’ve sighted you from afar without staging any distractions. We were literally caught off guard because we were and still are trying to run from our lives, so you either let us go and get out of our damn way, or we all die in a matter of minutes!"
That earns me a glare, but I’m too pissed to care.
"Shut your bloody mouth!" the leader snaps. "You know what? Enough talking, please."
He points from me to Benj, to Trish, and Dom. " your weapons. Now."
"No," Trish says immediately.
His gun shifts slightly toward her. "I wasn’t asking."
Vic groans from his upside-down position. "Oh my God, you people are so predictable."
Dom sighs. "It’s always ’drop your weapons’ with your types. Never ’Hey, let’s work together and not get eaten by zombies and whatever the hell that thing in the woods is.’"
The leader’s finger tightens on the trigger. "Last chance." 𝕗𝕣𝐞𝐞𝘄𝐞𝚋𝚗𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹.𝚌𝕠𝚖
Benji looks at me, his expression screaming, Are we really doing this?
I nod slightly. We’re outnumbered, but we’ve fought worse.
Then...
BANG.
