Apocalypse: I Build A Doomsday Train-Chapter 990 - 390: Breaking the Veil
"Dawn, this is Zhang Beihai of the Natural Selection. Using solar augmented reflection to transmit return information, the Breaking Curtain Device has successfully opened the Heavenly Veil, but we’ve been hit by an unknown dark energy storm, causing many crew members to mutate. The Civilization Pioneer and supply ships have separated, pushing us and the Deep Blue away from the dark energy storm zone. Captain Chu Jing has sacrificed, and I am now taking over as the leader of the Vanguard Plan. We’re departing the Solar System as planned. Goodbye, Blue Star!"
"Captain Zhang!? Did we... succeed?!!" The launch center manager heard this and his tears streamed down. "Two Constant Star level ships escaped!!!"
For the Vanguard Plan, of the seven starships, as long as one successfully escapes, it can be considered a success!
But just as he was about to cheer, he noticed the complex expressions of other staff members and realized something. He turned back, somewhat apologetically, toward Chu Zhaonan.
"Chairman Chu... I..."
Chu Zhaonan understood everything. He comfortingly addressed all the staff:
"It’s okay, it’s all the same."
"Our mission is complete. Now, everyone can leave. The Heavenly Calming Ship will lead you to a safe place."
Xu Yan looked over, and at this moment, it seemed like a thousand-pound burden had been lifted from Chu Zhaonan’s shoulders, as if he had aged tremendously.
The evacuation began, and inside the control hall, the last personnel and armed forces of the Federation started to leave the Underground City.
"Activate the Eternal Sky Well!"
Chu Zhaonan issued an ultimate command with his fingerprint.
Empty!
Woo!
At the top of No.1 Underground City, two massive steel gates slowly closed like heavenly gates.
This was once built for No.1 Underground City to prevent nuclear blasts; now, it was used to stop the mutations and outbreak of Abnormal Bodies within the Underground City.
Luo Ming led the Blazing Angel Team to cover the evacuation of numerous guards and launch center staff. As Xu Yan left, he saw Chu Zhaonan still standing alone in the launch hall and immediately said,
"Chairman..."
"You go ahead." Dressed in military attire, Chu Zhaonan stood calmly in the empty hall and said quietly.
"As the last leader of Human Civilization, I must be responsible for the mission to continue human civilization, and also atone for forgotten mankind."
He stood in the center of the launch hall, like a sharp sword guarding the once symbol of civilization and survival fortress, as the flood of Abnormal Bodies surged from the Underground City, yet none could overshadow his words.
Xu Yan’s expression was slightly dazed, and his eyes revealed some bitterness. Then he stood still and silently nodded towards him. Those hurriedly departing staff members also paused in threes and fours, turning back to look at the figure.
As Federation Chairman, he waited for everyone to leave.
As a father, he waited for a message to return.
Chu Zhaonan took out a sparkling navy badge from his pocket, and with a voice only he could hear, he said softly.
"Well done."
Thud, the Eternal Sky Well closed.
All Abnormal Bodies trying to pour into the city from the underground facility were blocked.
In East City and Southern City, the direction where the city walls were about to be breached, the 83 Iron Guard Brigade arrived for support, securing the last high walls.
10:48 a.m.
Daylight emerged.
The overnight rain disappeared, and Dawn City welcomed the dawn once more.
When the dark curtain receded, and sunlight shone upon this grand city, smoke billowed across the sky.
Rat-tat-tat.
When the last burst of gunfire ceased, the entire city fell silent.
On the city walls, the sky’s light illuminated the faces of numerous weary, desperate garrison troops, shining on the bloodied faces of survivors. Everyone knew at that moment that they had survived!
A young 17-year-old soldier of the garrison carried his gun to the edge of the city wall. His gaze looked out upon the dystopian landscape of the outer city district following last night’s brutal battle, only to be greeted by a nightmare scene expanding before his eyes.
Beyond the city walls, the once suburb of Outer City District no longer existed.
Broken skyscrapers appeared like the gnawed bones of a giant beast, concrete chunks and twisted steel intertwined, bare fracture surfaces exhaled black smoke, streets were unrecognizable, asphalt torn into scorched earth by shelling, craters lined up one after another, filled with dark red blood like countless open mouths. Traffic light remnants dangled from power poles, fragmented monster limbs hung upon them, and shattered glass reflected the rising sun like scattered blood-red diamonds.
Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of zombies and Abnormal Bodies’ corpses piled up like mountains, rotting, scorched, mutilated, layer upon layer, filling every street and every ruin. Some were smashed into pieces by heavy artillery, viscera and severed limbs hung on rebar; some were turned to charcoal by the flame thrower. At the city wall’s edge, large Special Level monster heads hung, a small nuclear blast had blown half its body from kilometers away onto the wall, creating a large breach. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
The situation inside the city wasn’t much better. The skyscrapers were especially tragic; attacks from flying Abnormal Bodies led to collapses, explosions, and blazing devastation of survivor vehicles across large street blocks. The streets were littered with corpses of various flying Abnormal Bodies and shell casings, anti-aircraft gun barrels still slightly steaming, rocket tail fins stuck in the ruins of collapsed buildings like eerie tombstones.
In each survivor district, countless survivors looked terrified, weary, covered with smoke and monster gore along with their vehicles. People began to call out, realizing their situation.
