Chapter 153: Chapter 153 Awkward

Laurel stared at Tina, baffled by how she had entered the truck without being noticed. She slowly massaged her temple.

"But I told you earlier that you can’t come with me. I thought we had an agreement?" Laurel furrowed her brows to let Tina know she was really mad.

Tina lowered her head, staring at her from under her lashes. "I just wanted to make sure you are safe... and I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to see what the world looks like now." She held her hands behind her while drawing circles on the ground with her right leg.

Alexander walked forward to her. "This is not funny Tina, something bad could have happened to you."

He turned to one of the soldiers. "Take her back home." He ordered.

Tina’s lips wobbled. "But I don’t want to go back."

"You don’t have a choice. You are going back! And when I return back, I’ll give you a befitting punishment." Alexander’s angry voice thundered through the air.

Laurel swallowed. Deep down she was scared that if they were to return, they might encounter the wave of the infected they had managed to escape from.

"Mr. Wayne, I don’t think it is a good idea to send some part of the force back to the fortress." Laurel paused. "Because, the infected must still be on our trail and there are too many for some few soldiers to handle and even if they managed to pass through them, the infected might follow them back to the fortress."

Alexander’s jaw clenched as he listened to Laurel’s words. "But she can’t come with us, the mist is too dangerous and there is no suit for a kid like her."

"I’ll figure that out, but for now we’d better stay together and start moving. It will be disastrous to be spotted by an infected." Laurel said walking past Alexander, she extended her hand for little Tina to take.

"I’m sorry aunty Laurel, I didn’t mean to cause you any trouble." She said in a small voice as she took Laurel’s hand.

"I’m still mad at you Tina... this is not something you should play with." Laurel chided.

Tina lowered her head as she followed after Laurel.

Gabriel shook his head. "Kids will always be kids." He muttered under his breath.

Chris carried his backpack and followed after Laurel and Tina.

Soon, they all abandoned the trucks and began scaling the high platform of the forest.

"Are we going in the right direction?" Laurel asked Chris who was holding a small black machine that kept beeping.

"I think so," Chris muttered.

"If you feel your illness acting up, you must immediately inform me okay?" Laurel said after a moment of contemplation.

"I will."

Alexander’s eyes darkened, as he watched them talking and walking side by side. Who didn’t know better would have thought they were the Wayne couples. A bitter taste spread through his tongue.

"Your wife seems pretty close to Mr. Lennox," Stefan said as he walked up to Alexander.

Alexander swallowed, his throat constricting with a burning sensation. "Yeah, she is his doctor." He said, sounding more sour.

"But it is kind of strange that I haven’t seen that close with her, but anyway I guess you all must be good friends," Stefan said, his eyes drifting to Chris and Laurel’s figures.

"Good friends? As if you are not aware of the fight between the Waynes and the Lennoxs." Gabriel said with an annoyed click of his tongue.

"Is that so? I’ve been in the isolation center and haven’t heard much about it." Stefan muttered under his breath.

"Oh you must be the new guy," Gabriel nodded, holding back the rest of his sentence.

"You’ve heard about me? I thought that was supposed to be kept a secret." Stefan said, pinching his finger at the word ’secret’

"I’m the commander’s assistant, of course, I’ll know." Gabriel tilted his jaw up in pride.

Alexander walked beside them not bothering to hide his darkened expression, he wasn’t paying attention to their conversation, nor did he intend to.

Unable to bear it, he quickened his pace, placing himself right between Chris and Laurel.

"What are you doing?" Laurel asked as she shot him a baffled look.

"I was just wondering what you guys could be saying that you had to walk so close to one another?" He jested, but his tone was grumpier than he intended.

Chris chuckled, glancing to his side, unable to bear the shamelessness of Alexander.

"What’s funny?" Alexander asked, glaring at him.

"Nothing, but if you want to have a conversation with her then I guess I’ll have to give you both some space." Without waiting for their response, Chris quickened his pace, leaving them behind.

Laurel let out a sigh as she watched Chris walking away. She turned to Alexander. "Must you make this awkward between us?"

"Awkward? Where and when?" He asked feigning ignorance.

Laurel’s hands wrapping around Tina’s tightened a little. "You’d better get it together Mr. Wayne."

"Oh, now you are warning me because of him? What? I thought you said nothing was going on between you? Then why are you angry that he walked away because I joined the conversation? Were you both saying something I wasn’t supposed to hear?" His eyes grew narrower at each of his questions.

Laurel shut her eyes momentarily before opening them again. "This is the problem you have, you always thought the worst about us, especially when you know I’m not hiding anything from here..." She let out a tired sigh. "Why am I even explaining things to you when we are getting a divorce?"

Alexander grabbed Laurel’s wrist, pulling her closer. "Never mention that word in front of me ever again Laurel." He warned under his breath.

When Alexander noticed the pair of eyes staring at them, he turned around only to find the soldiers stopped in their tracks with a stunned expression.

Some of them tightened their hands around their guns as the tension between them thickened.

Alexander flashed them an innocent smile before letting go of Laurel’s hand. "Now you made everyone think there is something wrong with our relationship." He said, still maintaining his smiling face.
