Chapter 157: Chapter 157 Like a Treasure Hunt?

....

The snapping sounds of twigs and coal under their boots echoed through the air. Laurel held the strap of the bag as she stared into the distance. They walked in a straight line, their black suits contrasting against the ashen landscape.

Tina’s yellow dress stuck out like a sore thumb. Laurel looked down, only to find Tina gazing up at her with those innocent, wide eyes.

Since the fight with Alexander, she had noticed that Tina had been strangely quiet, but she kept catching her gaze now and then.

"Tell me, what do you have to say?" Laurel asked, her voice slicing through the air, drawing the attention of the soldiers behind them.

Tina pursed her lips, stealing glances at her again.

"Say it, you don’t have to be afraid to talk to me," Laurel said again, flashing a polite smile at her.

Tina fluttered her lashes before looking up at her again. She swallowed before opening her lips. "Are you still mad at me?" Her small voice echoed through the air, curving a small smile on the lips of the men behind them.

Laurel let out a sigh. "If I said I’m not, I’d be lying. Do you know how scared and surprised I was when I saw you hiding in the van? What if something had happened to you... I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself for it."

Tina tightened her small hand in Laurel’s palm as if to comfort her. "I’m sorry, I won’t do it again... I was just a little curious... and I wanted to be with you too... I’m sorry I couldn’t help it," she said, lowering her head in guilt.

"You don’t have to sulk over it, now that we have talked, I’m no longer mad at you. But you have to understand that it will be very hard on you in terms of walking, sleeping, and eating." Laurel closed her eyes, wondering if she was even saying that to her. "Not too hard, but in comparison to life in the fortress, you’ll have to suffer a little.

And of course, there are rules you must follow, and that is to always stay in sight, and always stay with an adult. When you are required to stay quiet you must remain quiet. No throwing tantrums, and definitely no disobedience to any of my orders. You understand me?"

"Yes ma’," Tina said, nodding her head.

"Good," Laurel muttered as she returned her gaze to the vast land in front of her.

Her mind wandered to Alexander who was now walking beside Tina, having a little conversation with her.

She wondered if she was in the wrong for using his past life’s deeds to judge him now. But deep down she knew if he were given another chance in the same situation, he wouldn’t hesitate to order her death.

He didn’t even try to protect her or even investigate if the allegations were true, his actions were as if he was waiting for that day to happen. Laurel’s mood plummeted as her thoughts drifted to Camile. She wondered if she also made it through the apocalypse, and if there would be a time when they would meet again.

Not that she was looking forward to it. She believed Camile and Alexander must have had a relationship for him to protect her and believe her that much. ’What if she comes into his life again, would he still chase her away or would he acknowledge the feeling he had for her?’

’If she cooked up a well-seasoned lie for him, he would definitely take her back. He is only acting this way because I’m close with Chris, he doesn’t really care for me... if he did...’ Her eyes drifted to her wrist, where faint angry lines remained.

’No man will hurt the woman they truly love... perhaps he is just obsessed.’ She thought inwardly, before brushing away the dull ache forming in her chest.

"Aunty Laurel, what exactly are we looking for?" Tina’s voice echoed through the air again.

Laurel turned to her a little disoriented, as she didn’t catch her questions.

"We are looking for a special plant," Alexander said before glancing up at Laurel.

Laurel’s gaze met with his but she instantly averted her gaze.

"A special plant? Is that like a treasure hunt? But why is this plant so special? Is it a must that we find it?..." Tina bombarded with unending questions.

"Take it easy little lady, else she might not know where to start from," Gabriel said behind them.

Tina turned around to see the owner of the voice, when her eyes landed on Gabriel, she narrowed her eyes at him. "I wasn’t talking to you." She mouthed to him with no sound, so Laurel wouldn’t consider her rude.

But before she could turn around, Gabriel stuck out his tongue at her with a mean expression.

Her eyes widened, her flabbers were beyond gasted that she couldn’t believe an adult like him could be so mean and childish at the same time. Unable to lose in the newly formed battle, she stuck her tongue, using her finger to pull under her eyelid.

But Gabriel smirked before sticking out his tongue again, imitating her actions but this time with both eyes, and that was enough to ruffle her feathers in the wrong way.

Before she could come up with a comeback, Laurel started speaking. "The plant we are looking for is a snow Lotus, it is very special because it can help us to protect the fortress just like the huge tree."

Glaring one last time at Gabriel, she turned her attention to Laurel. "Oh... what does it look like? Is it like snow in the form of a lotus flower?" She asked, tilting her head to the side.

Laurel chuckled at her question. "Hmm not really, from the image I have seen, it is just a white lotus flower, on a single glance there is nothing that special about it."

Before Tina could part her lips to ask another question, a sharp beep from the black machine in Chris’s hand made the group fall into silence. Their eyes sharpened in alertness as they all turned to Chris who was walking in front of the group with silent questions.
