Apocalypse: Reborn with a Soul Sync Farming Space System-Chapter 72 Farming EXP
Laurel’s brows remained knitted as she held Chris’s wrist, her fingers pressing lightly against his pulse while her mind worked rapidly. His heartbeat was uneven, rising and falling in an unstable rhythm that made her chest tighten.
This was not how his condition was supposed to progress. She had calculated everything carefully before bringing him here. The environment was safer, the food was cleaner, and his treatments had been consistent.
Yet his condition had worsened.
Laurel slowly released his hand, her gaze drifting toward the slightly opened window. Even though it had been sealed properly, the faint heaviness in the air was unmistakable. The rain outside had not stopped for hours, and with it came a thick humidity.
Her eyes sharpened. "That must be it... the change in humidity.’
Chris’s illness was closely tied to his lungs and circulation. Excess moisture in the air could easily burden his breathing, especially when combined with the rising temperature after the rain. It would explain why his symptoms had flared so suddenly.
"I need to adjust his treatment," Laurel said quietly.
The doctor looked at her with uncertainty. "You are a doctor?" He asked.
"Yes, and he is my patient." She muttered under her breath, her gaze softening slightly.
"Your patient? Why didn’t you do anything when he needed your help? You even sent for me." The doctor’s brows furrowed deeply.
Laurel glanced at him from under her lashes. She didn’t have any answer for him.
"His condition is complicated. If there is anything that can help, we should try it." The doctor said. To him, Chris’s case was very intriguing.
Every test he had conducted told him the man shouldn’t be alive anymore, but somehow he was still breathing.
If they could find a solution to his illness, wouldn’t that be a major breakthrough in the medical field?
Laurel fell into a brief thought before a familiar name surfaced in her mind.
’Dan Shen.’
It was known for improving blood circulation, reducing inflammation, and easing pressure on the chest. She had chosen to plant it precisely for situations like this, though she had not expected to need it so soon.
Her gaze lowered instinctively, and with a thought, the translucent crop panel appeared before her.
[Dan Shen: Growth Status: 100% {Ready for harvest}]
[Shi Hu: Growth Status: 99% {almost ready}]
Relief flickered across her eyes.
Dan Shen was ready. Shi Hu would likely mature within an hour or two, but she could not afford to wait. Chris needed treatment immediately.
Laurel rose from the bedside and turned to the doctor. "Keep monitoring his breathing. If it becomes irregular again, send someone to find me at once."
"I will." The doctor nodded, although he wasn’t sure if she was reliable.
Without wasting another second, she stepped out of the room and headed toward the changing area. The moment she secured the heat protective suit around her body and fastened the helmet, the outside noise became muted, leaving only the steady sound of her breathing.
The rain struck the ground with force, steam rising faintly where droplets met the surfaces. Laurel hurried toward the storage shed where the tractor was parked, climbed into the driver’s seat, and started the engine.
The vehicle rumbled to life before moving steadily toward the farmland.
The protective growing zone came into view soon after, its reinforced structure shielding the crops from the hostile weather. The moment she drove inside, the difference was obvious. The air was controlled, cool, and stable, carrying the faint earthy scent of thriving plants.
Before she could step down from the tractor, a familiar mechanical voice echoed in her mind.
[Mission 007 Completed: Protective Growing Environment for Grade C Plants.]
[Reward Issued: Basic Herb Preservation Technique.]
[Farming Experience +100.]
Laurel blinked in surprise.
"Farming experience?" she murmured.
The system responded immediately.
[Farming Experience is used to measure the host’s agricultural proficiency. Accumulated experience will allow the host to unlock advanced cultivation methods, improve crop quality, shorten growth cycles, and increase yield.]
Her eyes widened slightly.
"So the more I farm, the higher quality the harvest becomes?"
[Correct.]
Before she could ask another question, the screen flickered again.
[New Mission Issued.]
[Mission 008: Harvest Mature Grade C Herbs.]
[Target Crops: Dan Shen, Shi Hu.]
[Reward: 10,000 Points.
Coins: 500]
Laurel’s breath caught in her throat. That was a large reward.
For a brief second, she wondered what could be unlocked with that amount, but the thought disappeared just as quickly.
She knew deep down the system was up to no good, after all how could something so stingy suddenly become generous?
She stepped down from the tractor and walked toward the section where the Dan Shen had been planted. The plants stood tall, their deep reddish roots hidden beneath the soil while their leaves spread outward in healthy clusters.
She removed the helmet and the handgloves, as the tarps were shielding the plants from the rain. And with the hydro-balance farming model, the air was normal and wasn’t too humid.
Kneeling carefully, Laurel brushed aside the top layer of soil with her bare hands. The earth parted easily, revealing the thick root beneath. She worked slowly, loosening the surrounding dirt before gripping the base firmly and pulling upward in one smooth motion.
The root came out completely intact.
A faint medicinal fragrance drifted into the air.
Laurel let out a small breath of relief before placing it gently into a container she had taken out of her space.
She repeated the process with steady precision, making sure none of the roots were damaged.
Time seemed to blur as she focused entirely on the task.
When the final Dan Shen root was secured, a soft chime echoed again.
[Dan Shen Successfully Harvested.]
Laurel straightened slightly before moving toward the Shi Hu. The slender stems curved gracefully along their supports, their surfaces smooth and vibrant.
Though one percent remained, the system’s indicator suggested it had reached a harvestable stage.
Using shears, Laurel cut each stem carefully at the base, ensuring the remaining structure would allow future regrowth. She arranged them neatly within a preservation case, recalling the technique the system had just granted her. The herbs needed airflow, controlled moisture, and immediate processing to retain potency.
By the time she finished, a thin layer of sweat had formed along her neck despite the cooling system inside the suit.
The panel appeared once more.
[Mission 008 Completed.]
[Reward:
Points: 10,000
Coins: 500]
