Chapter 85: Chapter 85 Purple Door

Ling Xuan stared at the floating screen for a long while before releasing a slow breath.

"Twenty kilometers into the mist," she repeated calmly. "That is not a small distance. We need to plan our movement so we can return to the fortress as soon as possible."

Laurel nodded, her brows slightly drawn together. "The suits can resist corrosion, but we do not know how long they can last. If the mist thickens or visibility drops too much, we might lose direction before we even find the herb."

Ling Xuan set the brush down properly this time and wiped the remaining ink from her fingers with a clean cloth. Her movements were unhurried.

"Haste makes waste," she said evenly. "There is no point in acting in panic."

Laurel hesitated before speaking again. "But we only have a month."

"A month will be enough, if we plan everything properly," Ling Xuan replied without raising her voice. "Right now the world is still unstable. Survivors are hiding, creatures will begin to appear, and desperate people will start moving. The mist will not become safer in the next few days. It will only become worse. We will use this first week to prepare."

Laurel pulled a chair over and sat across from her. "What kind of preparation do you have in mind?" She had thoughts of what to prepare, but there was nothing wrong with hearing from her.

"Information," Ling Xuan answered immediately. "Before stepping into unknown territory, we gather everything we can. We study the terrain, the wind direction, and how the mist behaves at different hours. We test the suits properly instead of trusting a short description from the system."

Laurel nodded slowly, paying attention to her words.

Ling Xuan leaned back slightly in her seat. "We also do not go alone. Just us venturing into the mist without backup is reckless."

Laurel blinked. "You want to bring soldiers with us?"

"Not ordinary soldiers," Ling Xuan corrected. "First, we observe if anyone inside the valley awakens abilities, they become priority candidates. Those who can endure harsh conditions will be more suitable and more useful, reducing the mortality rate."

Laurel fell silent again, thinking carefully.

After a moment she spoke in a softer tone. "You always think several steps ahead."

Ling Xuan gave a faint shrug. "I think about survival, you think about people."

Laurel lowered her gaze to her hands.

"To you, every life carries weight," Ling Xuan continued calmly. "To me, what matters most is whether we still exist tomorrow."

Laurel lifted her head again. "Both matter."

"Yes," Ling Xuan agreed without hesitation. "That is why we work together."

The tightness in Laurel’s chest eased a little. This was the first time Ling Xuan hadn’t mentioned her soft nature being a burden. She wondered if Ling Xuan really meant those words.

Then she suddenly remembered something and straightened in her seat. "There is still something I have been wondering about."

Ling Xuan raised a brow slightly.

"There are four doors inside this space house. We have only used the blue one. The other rooms might contain something that can help us prepare."

Ling Xuan followed her line of sight toward the hallway.

The purple door stood quietly opposite them, its smooth surface was faintly reflective under the soft light.

"I have thought about it too," Ling Xuan admitted. "Let’s open it."

Laurel stood up immediately, curiosity pushing aside her earlier worries.

They walked toward the door together. Up close, the purple surface had a subtle glow.

Laurel reached for the handle, but paused midway.

"The system never said we can’t open it, right?"

Ling Xuan crossed her arms. "Even if it did, I would still open it."

Laurel took a breath before pushing the door open. A gentle warmth brushed against her face, ruffling her hair a little.

Both of them stepped inside and stopped at the same time.

Rows of dark soil stretched out neatly in front of them. The earth looked rich and soft, as if it had just been prepared for planting. Above them, a steady light filled the space evenly, with no visible source. It was bright enough to see clearly, yet easy on the eyes.

And the air carried a faint scent of rain.

Laurel stepped forward slowly. "This..." she murmured.

"It is farmland," Ling Xuan finished quietly.

There were no weeds, no stones, and no uneven ground. Everything looked orderly and controlled.

Laurel crouched and pressed her fingers into the soil; it yielded easily beneath her touch, with a texture and moisture that were perfect.

"This soil is better than the land outside," she said honestly.

A notification appeared before them without warning.

[Controlled Growth Chamber activated.]

Laurel straightened immediately. "Controlled growth?"

[This chamber is designed to optimize agricultural production, and increase growth. The nutrients are automatically replenished, and environmental conditions remain stable.]

Ling Xuan’s gaze sharpened. "By how much is the growth accelerated?"

[Baseline acceleration is three times the natural rate. Adjustment is possible depending on energy allocation.]

Laurel inhaled slowly.

’Three times... and with the space water.’

That alone could change everything. She wouldn’t need to worry about weather conditions like she did when she was cultivating Dan Shen and Shi Hu herbs.

If she had known, she would have opened the door all this time. And maybe she wouldn’t have spent so much money and effort on cultivating them.

She slowly turned around, observing the soil and orderly rows that were around one to two hectares of land.

"But there is already farmland outside," she said. "Why create another space like this?"

[External land is subject to climate changes, contamination, and biological threats. This chamber guarantees stable production regardless of outside conditions.]

Ling Xuan gave a faint nod. "A backup plan."

"Yes," Laurel agreed softly.

She walked deeper into the chamber and noticed faint lines marking planting sections, almost like subtle guidance for where crops should go.

"System," Ling Xuan said calmly, "what is the cost?"

[Energy consumption increases with usage. Excessive acceleration may reduce efficiency in other system functions. Only plants from Grade B can be planted in this room.]

Ling Xuan let out a quiet sound of acknowledgment. "Nothing valuable is ever free."

Laurel brushed the soil off her fingers. "Can medicinal herbs grow here?"

[Most can. However, certain species require specific natural environments to mature fully.]

"Like Snow Lotus," Laurel said.

[Correct.]

She was not surprised. If it were that simple, the system would have stated it from the beginning. Even so, relief slowly spread through her chest.

Ling Xuan studied the chamber carefully before speaking again.

"System," she asked thoughtfully, "if the growth rate can be adjusted, can we increase it even more during emergencies?"
