Apocalypse: The Dead Lives-Chapter 29: The Rebellion
Chapter 29: The Rebellion
We were met by a rebel group.
However, they were too busy protesting against Marco and his men to notice us as we approached them.
"Tell Marco that we're not gonna stand for this bullshit! Yeah, it's the doctor today but it could be any of us tomorrow!" A kid standing on the roof of a car yelled into the air and the people around us proudly cheered him on.
He looks like he's barely fifteen years old.
"Tell 'em, kid!" Someone from within the crowd yelled at him. That's when I realized that the boy was yelling at one of Marco's men.
They stood further ahead of us, armed with the finest weaponry. They wore all-black uniforms paired with heavy bulletproof vests and some worker boots. Their faces were covered with ski masks, and they each had a black helmet on their heads.
Who are these people?
"Fuck the military! And fuck Marco!" The kid yelled in anger and one of the guards raised their guns.
They're military. It's all starting to make sense now. They're not Marco's men or guards. They're soldiers, acting on his orders.
"Hey, kid! Go home! Final warning!" A soldier angrily yelled down at the kid and he jumped off the car before quietly making his way through the parted crowd.
My eyes fell on a man hanging on a tall gate. His hands and feet were tied to the fence.
"Michael-" I uttered, I ran forward but Ronan was quick to hold me back.
"We can't draw any attention to ourselves." He whispered into my ear.
"What are we gonna do?" I asked before turning around to face him. "Please, Ronan we have to help him." I pleaded with Ronan. He took my face into his hands before placing a kiss on my forehead.
"We need to distract the army." He said before clenching his jaw.
"How the fuck are we supposed to do that? They're everywhere." Oliver uttered in frustration.
"Put your hood on," Ronan told me. I frowned but didn't question him any further; instead, I just quietly put my hood over my head.
"What the hell are you thinking-" Oliver started but was cut off by Ronan.
"See that girl over there?" He asked while looking in the direction of a brunette. "I need you to grab her gun from her waistband and run with it for dear life," Ronan told Oliver.
"You're not serious, are y-" Oliver tried but was cut off by Ronan once again.
"Once the girl starts running after you, find a place to hide and meet us back at the car. DeAndre, I need you to yell Hailey-Jade's name as loud as you can once the girl starts running after Oliver." Ronan told DeAndre and he nodded in understanding.
"Okay, but what if this backfires?" DeAndre asked us in a worried tone.
"It won't." Ronan calmly told him.
"Okay. But what happens after that?" I asked in confusion.
"DeAndre and I will get Michael down from the fence. We'll help him get back to the car and try our best to get out of here."
"What if they catch us?" DeAndre anxiously wanted to know.
"Then we'll have started a war," Ronan said before narrowing his eyes on DeAndre.
"Whatever. Let's just start this fucking shit show." Oliver uttered before placing a kiss on my forehead.
He sneaked his way over to the girl Ronan showed him and grabbed the gun from her waistband.
"Hey, asshole! Give that back!" She angrily yelled at Oliver but he shot her a playful grin before running down the street.
This is lightwork for Oliver because he used to be a track star in high school. And just like Ronan predicted, the girl started running after Oliver in the hopes of getting her gun back.
"There's Hailey-Jade! Quick! She's escaping!" DeAndre yelled loudly enough for the soldiers to hear him.
"There she is! She's getting away! Let's go!" A woman yelled into the air. The soldiers started running after Oliver and the girl following him.
"Move!" One of the soldiers angrily yelled at one of the civilians.
"Inform the commander! Immediately!" Someone running past us yelled at the person behind them.
"Let's move," Ronan uttered, lowering his voice.
We made our way through the crowd, unnoticed. I quietly watched as Ronan and DeAndre worked together to cut my dad loose from the fence.
Someone ran past me before jumping onto the fence. They surprisingly started helping Ronan and Deandre. I placed a hand on my chest in relief.
More civilians came to help them and I was relieved that none of them were trying to kill us.
They finally managed to cut my dad loose. One of the civilians caught him and his body slumped into them. Ronan jumped down from the fence before helping my dad.
"Thank you," Ronan uttered and DeAndre helped him hoist my dad up. I joined them and the people stared at us in wonder.
A sudden alarm went off and a group of army tanks and Jeeps came driving in our direction. The tanks stopped in front of the city gates.
Marco jumped out of one of the Jeeps and my breath caught at the sight of him. His eyes slowly ran over me, then Ronan. He pulled his face in disgust when he saw Ronan.
He was standing only five feet away from me. He seemed different in this light. In the uniform, he was wearing. He seemed a lot more dangerous.
He quietly reached for the gun in his waistband, but before he could pull it out, the civilians created an uproar.
"Go! Get him out of here!" One of the civilians yelled at us.
"Doctor Michael would've done the same for any of us." Another voice came.

"Go!" The first voice came again, this time a lot more urgent. Marco frowned at the people surrounding us.
He seemed shocked that his own people would turn against him to protect us. A group of strangers.
DeAndre started running down the street with my dad.
"Come on," Ronan uttered. I placed my hand in his before we started running through the ruins.
We heard the engines of the tanks whirring to life again.
""Alert! Alert! This is not a drill! We are ordering an immediate lockdown! Repeat! We are ordering an immediate lockdown! Secure all exits and stand by for further instructions!" A robotic voice announced over a PA system.
Ronan and I ran behind a tall building but the army was short on our heels.
The only sounds I could hear were our ragged breathing, heavy boots thunking against the ground, and indistinct screams.
Gunshots started going off in the distance and I worriedly looked back.
"We have to keep going!" Ronan yelled at me and I briefly squeezed my eyes shut before increasing the speed I was running at, desperately trying to catch up with Ronan.
There was an unsettling feeling in the pit of my stomach. A feeling that tells me something terrible was about to happen...
