Chapter 518: Chapter 518: Grandpa Chu Enters the Safe Base

All the leaders recognized the old men getting off the vehicles immediately.

They were retired generals of the country and had fought wars that made their nation peaceful after all.

President Yu walked in the front and gave the people who had just stepped on the concrete ground a military salute.

Even though he was the president, he had served in the military before joining politics.

"Who are those old men? Why is everyone so respectful to them?" A soldier standing near the packing lot asked the person standing next to him softly.

"You don’t know them?" The soldier next to him asked.

Some of the others nearby who heard the question turned to look at the two talking in whispers.

"If I knew, would I ask?" The first soldier asked.

"Which army do you serve for you not to know them?" Another soldier standing next to them asked.

"Are they very famous? They are not celebrities, are they?" The first soldier asked in surprise.

This time, even Grandpa Chu and Grandpa Li who had heard their entire conversation despite being a distance away couldn’t help turning their heads to look at the soldier.

That look caused more than just one soldier to shudder in fear.

How could they hear them from such a long distance?

One of the soldiers couldn’t take it anymore and enlightened the soldier asking all the questions.

"The one wearing a black shirt is General Chu. He was very famous as a fierce general.

The one next to him is General Li. They fought together on the battlefield and the two contributed significantly to the prosperity and peace enjoyed in our country over the decades.

From rumours, the two are as close as brothers even after leaving the battlefield for decades."

"That’s incredible. Are they here because of the upcoming battle with the zombies? But they retired from the battlefield a long time ago." Another soldier asked curiously.

"We will find out soon. Don’t speculate." The soldier who explained General Chu’s identity warned.

The group of soldiers immediately went quiet.

On the other side, after greeting the president, Grandpa Chu and the others also greeted the other leaders who came to welcome them.

"I hope my little granddaughter didn’t cause you guys too much trouble." Grandpa Chu said as he looked at Chu Miao and smiled.

"Hahahaha.....of course not, if anything, we are the ones who have bothered her a lot the last few days.

If she hadn’t been here, we wouldn’t even know that zombies are planning to attack our base.

We can’t be grateful enough to her." Commander Shen said from the back where he had been squeezed.

Grandpa Chu looked past the few leaders who had moved to the front and smiled genuinely when he saw an old comrade.

"Eh! Shen, you are here too?" He asked with mock surprise.

"Hahahaha...you old man. Don’t make fun of me.

I thought I was invisible since you hadn’t seen me." Commander Shen said as he moved to the front.

Those leaders, including the president, gave way for him to pass through.

"How is that possible? Aren’t I just happy to see my granddaughter?" Grandpa Chu was just giving an excuse since he sees Chu Miao in the Soul Ring often.

"It’s okay. Having our children and grandchildren with us is a blessing to be cherished." Commander Shen said with a sad smile.

It was obvious that he had been reminded about his family.

"Let’s go back and talk. We can’t catch up here in the open. We will disrupt the progress of those preparing for war." President Yu saw that the atmosphere had changed and immediately changed the topic.

"Okay. Let’s go back." Commander Shen changed his expression and led General Chu and General Li towards the president’s residence.

Chu Mo, his wife and the other middle-aged men and women who just left the Soul Ring followed behind.

Chu Miao and Ye Xuan brought the younger generation of the Li family and the others who had come out of the Soul Ring to look for Liang Wei and the other teammates.

Back in the president’s residence, Commander Shen continued the conversation.

"So, what brought you here?"

"I heard that there might be a big battle here and thought I’d come and stretch my old bones." General Chu said humorously.

"You are welcome. I think we will need all the help we can get." Commander Shen was welcoming of anyone who wanted to help because it would increase their chances of survival.

The number of casualties would also be reduced.

Commander Shen nodded, then gestured for everyone to sit. The spacious living room quickly filled with people, yet no one felt cramped.

Even the aides of the leaders in that room stood straight-backed along the walls, expressions solemn.

President Yu personally poured tea for the two old generals before taking his seat at the head of the table.

This was probably why he had been in power even after the apocalypse started.

He wasn’t proud.

"Since you came all this way, I assume you already know the situation is not optimistic," President Yu said calmly.

"The zombie tide this time isn’t an ordinary mutation wave. The fact that the zombies have developed intelligence and can organize armies cannot be taken lightly. Also, we don’t know how many zombies we will be facing and what their ranks are."

General Li took a sip of tea and placed the cup down slowly. His gaze swept across the room, lingering briefly on the younger officers before settling on Chu Miao who had just brought a group of youngsters into the room.

"We know," he said in a deep voice. "We received fragmented reports from several emergency channels.

Entire cities going silent overnight. It’s hard to ignore."

In fact, this report had been sent to Ye Xuan by Yang Lei two days prior.

They had already decided to check out those cities once they had the time.

Commander Shen’s expression darkened. "So we are not the only ones facing such a threat."
