Chapter 131: Defeated

Lilian did not join the initial rush. Her eyes remained fixed on the crystalline surface of the creature’s body, observing the way the orange light pulsed beneath the shards and how the surrounding Ether responded to it.

The more she watched the more something felt off. The structure was strange. Even intelligent mutants carried visible distortions in their Ether flow but this one felt stable and flickering in her eyes, as if something projected outward.

A quiet realization formed in her mind. This might not be his true body.

The thought sharpened her expression. If that was the case, brute force would not work. She needed to warn Myles before they committed too deeply.

Myles had already moved.

He accelerated straight ahead as he always did, cutting through the dense Ether without hesitation.

As he closed the distance, he raised one hand and condensed Ether rapidly. Flames erupted into existence and he launched a rapid volley of a dozen fireballs that formed and fired in swift succession.

They shot through the air and slammed into the crystal-covered figure one after another in tight rhythm. Explosions blossomed across the monster’s torso and shoulders, heat expanding everywhere in layered bursts.

The monster did not flinch. Instead, he laughed.

The orange glow within his body brightened as the flames collided against him.

"This won’t do anything to me," he said, swatting the incoming fire with casual swings of his arms.

The fire did not scatter normally. It bent inward. The crystalline shards along his arms and chest absorbed the flames, the orange light intensifying each time a fireball struck.

Samantha’s sharp eyes caught it immediately.

"Myles! The crystals are absorbing the fire!" she called out.

Myles saw it a second later and gave a short nod without breaking momentum. Fire would not overwhelm him. That meant they needed to send physical pressure and layered status effects.

Victor reached the monster first from the left, greenish cleaver already in motion.

He swung in a heavy arc aimed at the monster’s head while Clara thrust her frost spear from the opposite angle, the spearhead trailing cold vapor that froze the air in its path.

Their timing was precise.

The monster raised both hands.

His fingers met the blade and tip in a sharp metallic crack.

Victor’s cleaver collided against a forearm layered in orange crystal, sparks scattering as the impact reverberated down his arms.

Clara’s spear thrust met the other hand and frost spread across the crystal surface, but the ice did not bite deeply.

The monster pushed back with raw force and within seconds the three of them were locked in close-quarters battle, weapons grinding against crystal in tight exchanges.

From the rear line, Ethan shifted position and raised his pistols.

BANG!

BANG!

BANG!

He fired in controlled bursts, Ether bullets streaking forward and striking the monster’s upper torso and shoulder joints.

The impacts rang sharply but instead of penetrating, the bullets shattered fragments of surface crystal that immediately regrew or slid back into place. The orange glow beneath barely dimmed.

Ethan clicked his tongue in irritation.

"So those crystals can act like armor," he muttered.

George remained still, hammer resting against his shoulder. His runic weapon could fracture the ground and in this proximity a full swing would send shockwaves through his friends as well as enemy.

So he waited and watched for the opening that would allow him to strike without crippling the others.

Daniel adjusted his grip on his spear, his eyes tracking the monster’s joints. Kade flexed his ember-filled gauntlets, heat building around his fists, but neither advanced recklessly.

The battlefield was too compressed for wide-impact attacks.

The monster suddenly pushed off Victor’s cleaver and twisted his torso. Orange light flared violently and fire erupted from between the crystalline shards across his body.

Not from his mouth, but from his shoulders, arms, and chest. Jets of flame bursting outward in all directions.

The heat expanded in a circular blast, forcing Victor and Clara to disengage and leap backward to avoid being engulfed.

The street glowed briefly under the wash of fire.

The monster threw his head back and laughed, flames flickering across his crystalline frame.

"You see? You can’t even scratch me."

He stepped forward confidently, as though the fight had already been decided.

That was when the ground beneath him darkened.

Myles had circled during the retreat. He slammed his palm toward the asphalt and activated Shadow Bind.

Black shadows erupted from the cracked street like living tendrils, twisting upward and coiling around the monster’s legs and torso in rapid succession.

The darkness tightened instantly, wrapping over the crystal armor and constricting with incredible strength.

The monster jerked as the shadows locked into place.

"Ugh... what is this?!" he demanded, confusion cutting through his confidence for the first time as the writhing black restraints pulled him down and held him in his place.

The monster looked around wildly, searching for the source of the shadows that bound him.

His glowing eyes locked onto Myles a split second too late.

Myles was already moving.

He burst forward with terrifying speed, his steps cracking the asphalt beneath each step.

Ether wrapped tightly around his body, compressing around his limbs to sharpen every movement.

His eyes burned with cold and absolute killing intent.

The shadows held him in place.

The monster struggled, his muscles straining as orange light flared violently beneath the crystals.

The tendrils tightened in response and dug deeper into the gaps between shards and locking his joints in place. He tried to raise an arm but it did not move.

Myles closed the final distance in a single breath.

He drew Fangblade in one clean motion and stepped into the swing. The short sword slashed through the air with ruthless precision, its edge aligned perfectly toward the narrow strip of exposed flesh at the monster’s neck where crystal did not form.

SLASH!

The blade cut through without resistance. For a moment, everything froze.

Then the monster’s head separated cleanly from his body. It spun in the air before hitting the ground with a dull thud. The orange glow inside his severed neck flickered violently.

Cracks spread rapidly across the remaining crystal armor.

The towering body trembled, then collapsed forward. As it hit the ground, the crystalline shards lost their structure. They fractured and dropped, scattering across the street.

The shadows loosened and sank back into the asphalt. Drifting embers and fading orange motes remained where the monster had stood.
