Chapter 455: Universal tree thieves.

After all they had braved to reach the sanctum where the trees with the petals were, they did not expect a fight for the opportunity to get a single feather. The trees were visible. Tall, downward-growing with translucent feather-like petals that swung from side to side.

But thousands of a mixture of aliens were in the area, battling it out for the opportunity to get ahead of others. Some fought with blades, others guns. Others superpowers or whatever weapon they had in their arsenal.

The air was filled with screams. clashing weapons and burst of energy.

"This looks like the nightmare of a Black Friday sale." Nimo’s jaw dropped. "I am beginning to understand that warning about blood at the entrance of the forest."

Alfred’s hands lit up like torches. "And we are late to the party."

Nimo gripped two acid grenades, sweat trickling down the side of her face. She noticed something that the others seemed not to have noticed. "Suni....are you seeing this? The trees are not docile. I have never a television punch me in the throat on Black Friday."

The trees were retaliating against those trying to take their petals. The roots lashed out like serpents, branches stabbed like spears and petals seemed to slice flesh like razor blades.

One unlucky four eyed alien tried to climb a tree, and it snapped him in half like a bread stick. Not even the armor on his body helped.

Alfred looked ready to jump in. Sunshine held him back.

"There are too many opponents, your single fire won’t help." She looked at Nimo. "And neither will a few grenades." She looked ahead at the roaring crowd. "What they need is a little chill."

Nimo frowned. "Suni, there are thousands of people here. And moving trees. You can’t possibly be thinking what I am thinking. It is----"

But Sunshine was already moving. She had practice mass freezing skills in the space so she was certain that she could do what she had in mind. It helped that she had a prime core to multiply her abilities. As she forged ahead, frost spread from her hands, rising from the ground like a living mist.

Fighters found their feet frozen to earth. Screams turned to silence as ice encased bodies mid-swing. Even the trees shuddered, their petals dimming as frost climbed their trunks.

Sunshine was like a witch, rising from a graveyard of the coldest mist. Those who tried to escape looked at her with hatred as her ice trapped them.

As for the ones that tried to struggle, Nimo and Alfred shot them with sedatives. Within minutes, the sanctum was a frozen battlefield. Thousands stood locked in icy statues, their faces twisted in rage, disbelief, greed and fear.

Sunshine raised a wall of ice behind them to buy them some minutes, undisturbed by new arrivals.

She dusted her hands off with a smile. The job had been accomplished with such ease.

Alfred looked around in shock. "You froze everything!"

Sunshine shrugged. "What can I say? I am that good."

"Or she is efficient." Nimo laughed.

Alfred shook his head. "I used to fear you when you fought bare knuckled. I learned to fear you even more when you started wielding that head bursting weirdly huge hammer. Now....I am terrified of you. Remind me not to argue with you."

Sunshine chuckled and looked at her watch. "Well, no time to waste. They won’t stay frozen forever; we should move now."

They reached the trees with ease.

"They look heavenly." Alfred said, plucking a single petal.

Sunshine shattered a few branches that Nimo collected. "This will take too long. Let’s just take all the trees."

Sunshine grinned. "Great idea but we should not be too greedy. If we take everything, we will be hunted down. But if we take one..."

"Or three." Nimo countered.

"Maybe five." Alfred chimed in.

Together, they managed to uproot four entire trees, their roots snapping like fragile glass, Sunshine sent the Phimma Blooms to her space.

"Where the hell is she storing them?" Alfred asked Nimo. "She just waved her hand and they vanished. I swear, our Suni is getting more and more weird."

Nimo didn’t not have time to lie to her brother because suddenly, the ground started to crack.

Alfred had not yet noticed and he was still chattering on. "We are now tree thieves. Universal tree thieves! Intergalactic tree thieves. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds? Or maybe cool....I mean, how many people can say that they robbed trees from an alien planet?"

Nimo slapped him on the back. "You dummy, the ice is cracking."

"Can we catch a damn break!" Alfred wailed.

Sunshine retrieved the hover boards and the three soared to the sky, racing away as the ice fell apart. The sanctum erupted into chaos, other fighters screamed in their direction.

Even the trees lashed out, trying to shoot them down with its branches.

Petals fell to the ground and the battlefield thawed into madness.

"We have company." Nimo shouted. Following them in the sky were many determined pursuers. Some wanted revenge on Sunshine for freezing them. Others wanted the trees she had stolen.

"I know." Sunshine screamed. "System, anytime now. We have what we came for."

[Initiating the evacuation protocol.]

The system started a countdown from three to one. And then, their bodies were swallowed by a flash of bright light.

Their pursuers came to a stop, looking around in confusion.

The three tree thieves meanwhile found themselves back on earth, standing in Sunshine’s office.

Alfred looked around wildly, blinking in confusion. When he noticed that the walls were familiar and the world was no longer upside down, he sighed in relief. "We are back!"

"Yup." Sunshine nodded. "Good old earth."

Alfred laughed. "Oh man, that was insane." He shook his head. "Absolutely insane."

"Next time, take us somewhere boring," Nimo sank on the floor. This trip had been more dangerous than the one on Veldek. She would take the bear any day in comparison to the upside-down world.

What was that place even called?

Meanwhile, Sunshine looked at the compass, wondering if she should keep or sell it. Now that she had the phimma bloom petals, she was probably never going back to Dimension K.

At least, not anytime soon. Maybe if she got free passes to another world but not voluntarily.

"I agree with Neems, next time let’s visit a world that doesn’t try to kill us every five minutes, but I must admit, it was fun." Alfred opened a bottle of water that was resting on Sunshine’s desk.

"Next time?" Sunshine put the compass away, arching her brows when she turned her gaze to Alfred. "I do not think there will be a next time for you Alfred."

Betrayal pooled in Alfred’s eyes. Oh come on! why? I was awesome as backup."

The two women laughed and pushed him out of the office. Sunshine locked the door and slipped an arm through Nimo’s. "Wanna have lunch with me? Or get our dogs to race?"

Alfred followed them still demanding to know why they would not take him along on their next trip. He was determined to make Sunshine change her mind. This was a once in a lifetime kind of adventure. Only a fool would give it up.
