Apocalyptic Rebirth: With a repairman system space, she rises again.-Chapter 464: A restored network.
Dr. Sing nearly dropped his tablet when he saw Sunshine walk into his office. He had received word already that she had a project in mind for him, but she had taken her sweet time coming to find him.
Two times, he had gone out looking for her and failed to see. But that did not matter, she was finally here and no doubt, whatever new project she had in mind would be great.
His eyes lit up the way they hadn’t in weeks, because while the labs were busy mass-producing advanced medicines, none of it had challenged him and boredom, apparently, was his greatest enemy. It was even more dangerous than any mutant beast.
"I..." he pushed his glasses up to cover his moist eyes. "I almost died without you."
A lab tech rolled her eyes. Dramatic much professor! she thought.
And Sunshine, the corners of her lips rose slightly. "We cannot have that now, can we? We will all die without the amazing lab and its wonderful knowledgeable researchers."
Dr. Sing opened a pack of gum. "In that case, please remind Mr. supply manager Ariel Quinn to restock my favorite gum. I always get a box weekly. This week, I got some kind of healthy dark chocolate candy balls. I have a system. Gum is part of...."
Sunshine cut in. "And that is why I brought you the gum secretly."
Dr. Sing exhaled in relief.
The lab tech who liked the healthy dark chocolate candy decided to remind Ariel that Dr. Sing loved it a lot. It was a way of taking care of the professor’s health and satisfy his sweet craving. Two birds, one stone.
Sunshine set the gum and materials down. Then she slid him a note with precise measurements, straight from the system. "See if you can make pills out of these," she said calmly, then added, almost as an afterthought, "If you can turn it into a vaccine, I will be very grateful."
Dr. Sing frowned, poking at the vials with the morrow extract. "That is not how vaccines work. I need to know what it is fighting against.
"Poisoning from radiation. Infections from toxins in the air." Sunshine explained. "With these pills, we can walk into places with mist with a 90% survival rate."
Dr. Sing’s eyes widened. "Fantastic." The man almost clapped. He stared at the ingredients like a child handed forbidden toys and nodded so hard that Sunshine worried for his neck. "Ma’am," he said, clutching the note like a treasure map, "you have no idea how happy you have made me today. A vaccine like this could change a lot of things for things for us. How we hunt, access to resources in the areas that are always plagued with mist. We...."
"I am excited too." Sunshine laughed softly, "But I must rush off and attend to other duties." She placed a book on the desk. The cover was brown, no markings at all. "This is a book on toxins, viruses, bacteria and stuff like that. Give it a read and see what you can learn."
It had knowledge on illnesses that would plague humanity in the coming years and maybe even longer. She wanted that knowledge in the hands of someone so that even in her absence, the people would survive.
Dr. Sing hugged the book, laughing in an almost manic way.
As she turned to leave, already trusting that whatever madness she’d just unleashed in this lab was in very capable, very enthusiastic hands.
When she settled in the car, Day started from where he had stopped on the rumors around the base.
He kept going until Sunshine’s radio crackled and Justine’s voice came through. "Ma’am, eighty percent of the work is finished. We would like to test the signal before proceeding. Some of the engineers are afraid that we will do all this work, discover a problem and then take everything down and start from scratch." 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Sunshine tapped one of her nails on the back of the radio, twisting her mouth from side to side. The engineers had a point. "In that case, go ahead with the test. I am on my way to the communications control room to join you."
The experts activated the system. Crystals hummed, cables glowed faintly and then, little green lights lit up on the poles.
It was hard to tell if there was anything happening. Even Day held his breath but increased his speed.
And then, the phone in Sunshine’s tool belt made a familiar sound.
A ringtone.
One she had not heard in close to a year!
She laughed as she retrieved the phone and answered the call after clearing her throat. "....Hello?Is anyone..."
"I am here; I am here." Justine replied almost frantically.
"Can you hear me accurately?" Sunshine asked.
"Yes ma’am. Loud and clear." Justine squealed. "I cannot believe that it is actually working. We can now make phone calls. Oh my gosh, this is so exciting. I have to call my mom and let her know."
The control room erupted behind her.
Sunshine raced into the room, and she found the experts with their phones in hand. Some stared at their devices in disbelief.
"I’ve got bars," Someone whispered in awe, like they were talking about gold bars that had fallen out of the sky.
"The Wi-Fi icon is working," Someone shouted.
"Wait....I can’t use my apps. Why can’t I use them? Where is the internet?"
Justine rolled her eyes. "People, stop trying to access search engines, cloud-based apps and streaming and social media. Their servers are probably all dead by now. Just be glad you can make calls. As for other things, we can restore them slowly."
"Yes." A man bellowed. "This test was to ensure that we are on the right track. Our job is not over, back to work everyone."
Sunshine keyed into the base channel, her voice warm and steady. "Attention Fortress Four. Cell towers are live, but the range is limited. You can make calls within the base."
Cheers exploded across the halls, laughter, a few stunned silences. Those who still had their cellphones rushed to their houses or rummaged through their bags in search of these gadgets.
Justine shook her head and rolled her eyes. "Ma’am, you do realize that all these people will be trying to access search engines to share pictures or annoy us with motivation speeches on how to survive an apocalypse."
Sunshine laughed. "Then you should reach out to Lisha and make sure everyone knows that the connection is not all about that. I must admit, I also thought about accessing the old-world apps for a moment there."
Justine shrugged. "Maybe one survived. Who knows?" She turned and gestured for the engineers and comms officers to get back to work.
Meanwhile, outside, people were already trying to reach the phones of loved ones in the fortress and outside.
The wealthy were now actively drawing plans to monopolize the benefits of the restored network. Others were not interested, they were relaxed. And they would get back to work when the apocalypse ended. They thought the others were planning prematurely.
The apocalypse had not ended. It was too soon to rebuild businesses.
Sunshine got a call from Hades. "I called you before anyone else." He said candidly.
She laughed. Sunshine wanted to say something, but her lips remained still. So, she listened to his voice, mingling with the roar of excited voices outside. They drowned him out, but she held her tentative smile.
She knew what would happen now. Some people would use this restoration for love. Some for greed. Some for survival.
