Chapter 501: The eerie cake and special phone.

"Repeat this conversation to Dwayne and only Dwayne." She instructed him. "I will figure out how to help superhumans protect their minds against whatever magic the watchers are using to control our minds."

Poncho’s wife coughed loudly. She had been doing so for a while now. And she was not the only impatient person that wanted their loved one returned. A young purple haired birthday boy was standing in the entrance of the information center, tapping his foot impatiently.

She pushed Poncho. "Go on, before your baby punches me next."

Laughing, he skipped into a run, scooped his daughter from his wife’s arms and threw her in the air, bellowing in a base. Sunshine walked to Earl, took his hand and they walked back to the car.

"Home Day, hurry." Earl shouted frantically to the driver.

Day stepped on it.

Earl burst through the house like a planet, "I am here, I am here, we can begin the party." He declared.

The Quinns who were hiding did not even get a chance to yell out ’surprise.’ The word died on most of their lips.

"I guess we can save it for Castiel’s birthday." Rori shrugged.

"Unless the devil walks through that door. Then we will be in for a real surprise." Hadrian muttered. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Hades punched him in the gut.

Meanwhile, Sunshine was already on the kitchen, facing off with the king of supplies, Ariel Quinn. The eleven-year-old was searching for the birthday cake which he had left specific dimensions for. "Mom, where is the frugal cake you promised Earl?"

"Tank kidnapped it." She replied, opening the fridge for a cold drink. "And I kept it small."

Ariel eyed her suspiciously. "Efficiency mom, not extravagance." He repeated the same words he had said to her in the morning.

"Mm-hmm." Sunshine replied, keeping the can of soda on her mouth.

By lunch time, the last of the Quinn relatives and friends began arriving. Nimo carried a bouquet of balloons shaped like syringes, a very odd shape that nobody had seen before. Ariel looked at them as if they would prick him at any time.

"Did you run out of animal ideas?" The boy asked her.

Nimo laughed and tried to ruffle his purple hair, but he dodged and glared at her. "Earl wants to be a doctor, he will love this, I am sure." She sighed in joy when the cool air caressed her bare arms. "Hey kiddo, what do you think of me moving in here with you?"

Ariel stepped back from her. "No thank you. I am already raising two parents, two brothers, a bear and two robots that are always secretly trying to kill each other. I don’t think we need to add an overly emotional aunt."

"It is called excessive emotionality." Ala who had been steadily standing by Ariel’s side to welcome the guests pitched in. Then, she yanked Nimo’s hand gently and stamped it. "You will need to show this before being allowed into the VIP section."

Ariel rolled his eyes. "It’s the rooftop."

Warren opened a box of sparklers, and someone screamed for him to take them outside. The younger children and White chased each other with birthday hats, using the pointy ends as swords.

Earl stood at the center of it all, now decked out in a gold solar suit. His eyes were darting toward every wrapped box that was placed on the gift table. He thanked everyone politely, wondering which box had the phone.

"Cake time." Hunter declared.

"Please let it be small." Ariel muttered under his breath.

Then, Tank wheeled in the cake on a cart and Ariel’s legs gave out. What the robot brought was a towering cake shaped like a human skeleton, nearly adult sized. The rib cage was layers of strawberry sponge stacked with cream, the femurs were chocolate fudge, and the skull was marshmallow fondant with glowing purple sugar berry eyes. Each vertebra was a cupcake, perfectly aligned down the spine.

Children squealed. Adults laughed nervously. Aunt Ambrosia clapped her hands like it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen.

Earl was amazed. "This is amazing. It is anatomically perfect." He admired the cake like a monument and swiped a hand through the cream on the femur. "Mmm, and sweet."

Ariel struggled to breathe, like he was about to faint. "I said small cake, not medical exhibit."

Sunshine hid behind Hades, peeking around him to their son who would trim all their supplies the next day to make up for Tank’s wastage.

Meanwhile, the skeleton cake became the main attraction, and everyone wanted to take a photo beside it. Younger boys were daring each other to eat the eyeballs. White was captured by Hunter for the crime of trying to climb up the skeleton.

Soon, everyone was singing happy birthday while Earl blew the candles in the fingers of the skeleton. Sunshine and Lisha sliced the cake, and each guest received a piece of anatomy: ribs for some, a finger or toe. Warren claimed dibs on the whole skull.

White ate the eyeballs.

"This is weird." Hadrian said as he bit into a femur.

Nimo shuddered and closed her eyes before biting into an ear.

The cake was delicious, despite its eerie presentation. After the cake ceremony, the gifts began. Earl maintained a faint smile as he opened boxes of books, toy stethoscopes, video games, toy cars.

His heart started racing when Sunshine handed him a small rectangular box, the size he knew cell phones came in. He ripped it open vigorously. Inside was a cell phone. He squealed, his eyes sparkled.

He jumped into Sunshine’s arms, purple hair rubbing against her cheek. "I knew it mom, I knew you would give me what I wished for the most because you love me the most."

Hades rolled his eyes. The phone was a gift from him too, not just his wife.

Sunshine put him down and pulled out another phone from her tool belt. "This one," she said softly while handing it to him, "is even more special."

Ala and Ariel looked at each other. They both knew exactly where that phone had come from.

When Earl touched the glass surface, the phone hummed and projected glowing diagrams of human organs, veins and bones. He swiped it and something less human appeared, its biology laid out. The phone whispered medical knowledge in two languages, one that only Ala recognized. The other, he was familiar with.

Earl’s heart raced. "What kind of phone is this? Why does it know medicine?"

Sunshine leaned in, "A special phone for my special son."

Earl blushed and hugged the phone. "I love it mommy, thank you."

But before she could reply, the phone flickered. The voice uttered a warning.

"Unauthorized user detected. Prepare for retrieval."
