Chapter 510: The unusual rescue squad.

Out in the forest, the battle between the women and the crocodylus was already underway. Sunshine had covered its snout with ice, and she was slowly freezing all other parts of it. Leah was working on slicing its ridges on the back, to expose its weak spot.

Nimo hovered above, in her exo suit. She hurled a grenade at the creature’s back, but the crocodylus twisted, avoiding the blast. The grenade fell into the water, simmered and the hot acid tainted water splashed upwards, nearly scalding Leah.

"Hey acid hands, watch it." Leah barked.

"Sorry, I got excited." Nimo replied, already preparing another acid grenade.

The ice covering the snout of the crocodylus cracked. Immediately, the beast snapped at Sunshine. It lunged upwards, dragging the rest of its body out of the lake. It was not as big as the ones they had fought before.

"Aww, you are a baby." Sunshine squealed. "Could have been cute if you were not trying to snap me in half." She raised her hands, retrieving the net. "But today is not your lucky day sweetheart."

Leah grabbed another side of the net and together, they wrapped it around the head of the beast.

"Now Neems." Sunshine bellowed

Nimo jumped onto its back, swaying from side to side as the beast twisted and growled. Still, she managed to find the sac and hurl an acid grenade at it. The sac exploded in a spray of orange goo. The crocodylus shrieked one last time, thrashed violently and collapsed as its energy was drained completely.

The wind stilled, as did the lake. Only ripples remained on the surface, evidence of frightened fleeing fish.

"Yuck, it kind of pops like a zit." Nimo complained.

Leah and Sunshine laughed.

"It may be gross, but it is the quickest way to kill a crocodylus." Sunshine said, eyes narrowed on the lake’s surface. "What the heck was a baby crocodylus doing here?"

"And where is mommy and daddy?" Leah asked.

"More importantly, where is Amber?" Nimo asked.

The three women remembered the kidnap victim they had brought into the forest. Sunshine had saved her at the last moment, just before the crocodylus could sink its teeth into her soft flesh. But she had thrown her to the ground carelessly and focused on the fight. The three women looked around, calling Amber’s name.

Leah was the one that found her, a few feet away from the lake. A few ants were gathering around her body, trying to figure out how to carry her off. Amber was unconscious. Sunshine and the crocodylus had scared her into fainting. She lifted Amber from the ground, using the wind to move her. "Got her, she is either dead or in a coma."

Before she could get her back to where Sunshine and Nimo were waiting, the birds stopped chirping suddenly. There was a bigger ripple on the lake and a splash.

From the depths, another shadow stirred. Larger. Hungrier.

"Leah...you better get back here." Nimo hissed.

Leah dropped Amber to the ground without care. She rushed back and joined her friends. All three women looked at the lake, pondering on the possibility of Leah’s question finally being answered. Mommy or daddy crocodylus was about to strike.

"Round two?" Nimo whispered.

Sunshine groaned."Of course. Because there can never be just one crocodylus."

The water began to boil.

And then--the beast raised its head and roared.

The squads which had come to the rescue of the women were split in two. Some superhumans had flown off in exo suits and other soldiers and superhumans were on foot, traveling down the same path the women had taken. Hades, Dominic and Dwayne were with this group, to their great disappointment.

All the men had wanted to go ahead in exo suits. But they had come with the kids’ squad for the mission. And the women would kill them if something happened to the children on their watch. With every second that they walked, Hades continued to wonder how Ariel had talked him into allowing the kids squad to join the mission.

Blackmail! Ariel had blackmailed him.

It was either the kids squad joined the mission, under heavy adult supervision and protection or he spilled some secrets to Sunshine. And he would get Ala to teleport them into the forest. Ala was willing and eager to do so. Hades and Dominic had realized quickly how dreadful it was to have children that were too smart for their age.

So, the whole group was outside, with his oldest son carrying himself with the seriousness of a commander ten times his age. Earl had insisted on coming along, in case they needed a professional doctor! Castiel had thrown a tantrum and threatened to run away with White if he was left behind. White had just carried Castiel, as if he understood. And that was how they all found themselves in the forest, listening to Castiel singing the apocalypse lullaby, blissfully unaware of the dangers around them.

"Dad, we are moving too slow." Earl whined. "If mom’s fighting a crocodylus, we should hurry. We don’t want to miss the golden time for saving her."

It was the third time he was saying those very words. "Buddy, twelve superhumans have already reached ahead of us. Your aunt Lisha says the beast is being subdued right now. I am beginning to think that this journey was a waste of our time."

Behind them, Dominic walked with Ala. She was still levitating popsicles but now, she had added a granola bar, spinning it lazily in the air. Dominic kept glancing at her, torn between worry and pride. On one hand, if she was trained right, she would be a great force to be reckoned with in the future. On the other hand, there were hungry beasts in the forest and greedy, envious humans. Some would want to steal her food, but others would want to sell her.

"Stop showing off, Ala." he said softly.

"I am not showing off." Ala replied cheerfully "I am practicing like mom tells me to all the time. She says I should grow up to be so powerful that everyone thinks twice about crossing me." She raised her fist. "I will be the most powerful mutant in future. I will protect our family."

Dominic sighed. If his daughter was raised with his wife’s temperament, they would be in and out of the principal’s office for many years. He raised an eyebrow at her reference to herself as a mutant. Now that he thought about it, she referred to superhumans as mutants. Was that what they were? Should they change the way they referred to themselves?
