Apocalyptic Rebirth: With a repairman system space, she rises again.-Chapter 519: Where are the watchers?
Hades, leaning against a console with the grace of a bored panther, didn’t even look up from what he considered a more important affair, brushing strands of Sunshine’s hair back. "Don’t start celebrating yet, Sheldon," he drawled, his voice dripping with cynical honey. He finally lifted his gaze, meeting Sheldon’s instantly fallen face. "She’ll be back. Emily doesn’t seem like the ’forgive and forget’ type. More the ’remember and retaliate’ type."
Sheldon’s celebratory dance deflated like a punctured balloon. "Oh," he squeaked. "Right. Back. Probably with... more troops. Or a tank. Do you think she has a tank?"
Lisha nodded vigorously, "She had drones. Babel was one of the most protected cities before the apocalypse. If she managed to get her hands on some heavy-duty weapons, then she will be back with them. On the upside, we have the impenetrable bubble, gates, high walls, exo suits and superhumans. If Emily wants a war, she is in for a heartbreaking loss."
Everyone nodded. What could ordinary guns do to them?
"Did Joy tell you what superpower Emily has?" Sunshine turned to Carson. "We need to make sure that it’s not something powerful enough to destroy our walls."
"She is still uptight about that." Carson replied. He touched his fists together. "I will head to the prison base and get it out of her today using any means necessary."
Father Nicodemus closed his eyes.
Sister Anna ran after Carson, no doubt to get him to change his mind about the means he had in mind.
Sunshine commanded everyone to turn their attention back to her. "The rest of you should be on high alert. Keep watch for anything suspicious. For all we know, they have another Joy in Kingsbridge."
"Or something that crawls." Warren piped up. "In this apocalypse, you just never know. We should increase the drones monitoring outside and their range."
People started to disperse, getting back to work. Half of them were heading to Westbrook, the first point of major entrance to Fortress four.
Major Elio clapped a heavy hand on Sheldon’s shoulder, making him jump. "For all this extra work we are putting in to keep you alive, you better donate to the Fortress four Emergency Relief. Also, the Superhuman Relief Society. And lastly, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Fighters and Survivors. If someone is harmed in this war that was started because of you, your money will be supporting them and their families forever."
Sheldon opened his mouth to protest.
Major Elio glared at him, eyes flickering a slight red spark that caused Sheldon’s heart to tremble.
"Yes Sir." He whispered.
In silence, everyone watched Major Elio walk away, promising themselves not to cross the man.
For the remaining part of the afternoon, the commanders stayed in the command center creating different strategies of how to respond to Emily’s attacks. Insect drones were sent to King’s bridge where live feed of Emily was sent back to the screens showing the angry ruler terrorizing those that crossed her paths.
She was then clearly seen ordering one of her men to send out spies to Ferry Island and Fortress four to find out their weaknesses. She stressed that she did not care how they did it, all she wanted were results.
"Well, I guess that she will be sending more spies then." Carson stated as he entered the command center. He had come straight from the prison base, and he smelled like dry blood. A black feather was hiding in the collar of his solar suit.
"She cracked." Sunshine stated.
Carson smirked. "Quicker than I hoped. Emily can control gravity or something like that."
"She is a kinetic." Warren laughed. "Like Ala."
Carson tilted his head. "I am not so sure. The description Tomato gave is a bit different from what Ala can do." He walked closer to Sunshine and said softly, "I will be going now, I still have the smuggling operation to crack."
Sunshine met his gaze. "Yeah, about that, I want the one calling the shots. He/ she will regret ever messing with my base. I will use that person to show all those that were harboring the same idea what happens when you break the rules."
"Yes ma’am." Carson answered, even he was worried for that stupid fool, whoever that was.
Sunshine drifted toward the window, boots scuffing softly against the floor, her eyes locking onto the shimmering pink bubble outside, more specifically the empty spot where Pink usually lounged like a feathery queen surveying her kingdom. She lingered there for too long, chewing the inside of her cheek.
When Lisha noticed, she slid up beside her with the kind of curiosity that never meant trouble but always found it anyway, "You’re looking for the Watchers, aren’t you?" Lisha asked, folding her arms.
Sunshine nodded, scratching behind her ear like she’d just remembered an itch from three conversations ago, "Yeah... I was wondering what they’re planning now, it’s been so long since we last saw them Lisha, that cannot be good." she muttered.
Lisha snorted softly, "You are not the only one worried about it. People are beginning to come up with conspiracy theories about what happened to them, some are even saying that they went back where they came from. Zulu is convinced they’re plotting to kidnap her. Some idiots are laying blame at your feet, saying you antagonized them and they are plotting revenge. Hadrian and I mobilized the soldiers to punish the ones that were spreading the rumor."
"Good." Sunshine nodded in approval. It was nice to see the Quinns working to keep the base in order without taking commands from her first. "Any news from the team that went out to search for the watcher’s severed leg?"
The leg Nala had severed in the fight had fallen to the ground. The watchers had not retrieved it, and so far, neither had the Fortress four team that was searching for it.
"Nothing yet. We are receiving regular updates on their wellbeing in the forest. Everyone is fine, some scratches from fights with mutated beasts but no death and no severed leg." Lisha answered. "Old Simon formed a search team of his own. Civilians mixed with soldiers and superhumans. I heard Leah went with them. They set out for the Northern side of the forest. Maybe they will find something over there."
Like she had done with Fifi and Moon, Sunshine had put a bounty on the severed leg. The residents were very excited for it.
"I want that leg, it will bring us closer to knowing more about these damn watchers," Sunshine said. "Increase the reward money to 500,000. If there is no news after a fortnight, increase it to a million."
Lisha nodded. "I will add a million of my own and some supplies to increase the motivation. Hopefully, we find it before the watchers return. They have never allowed us to keep a nail, feather of dead body of their kind before. When they remember the leg, they will be back for it."
