Chapter 564: Straight out of sci-fi.

Outside the glass bubble, the underwater empire was bright and unreal like a dream. Massive, glowing statues of Spiraled spines rose from the sea floor, acting as anchors for the city.

Sleek, spherical vehicles zipped through current lanes, propelled by glowing blue turbines. The Coral-Scrapers looked like organic, crystalline trees reaching for the distant, shimmering surface. Transparent tubes snaked between the towers, with high-speed pods shooting through them like silver bullets. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

It was like a scene straight out of a fantasy movie and Sunshine had seen her fair share of sci-fi movies, especially in this life, after the apocalypse started.

This was a dream city, the kind she wanted to see in the new earth after the apocalypse. Not the same old rusted brick buildings. With that thought in mind, she decided to record and save the footage for future use.

"It’s like a futuristic aquarium." Sunshine put her hands together, staring in admiration. "I could live down here forever."

Nine took shallow repetitive breaths. "Hey human, grow some sense. We are the prey in case this tube bursts! If they get their hands on us, we will be the ones in the fish tank, poked and pointed at as they wonder if we taste better roasted or raw." he muttered, he began to check the walls for leaks or weak areas.

At the first sign of a crack, he would make a run for it. The others be damned!

"Look at those sea creatures," Sunshine whispered, pressing her face against the glass. "They look like they’re dancing."

"They’re not just sea creatures," Vortan explained, checking a holographic map on his wrist. "Those are the Aqua titans. They have won the Poseidon crown championship three times in a row."

"Poseidon crown.... what is that?" Sunshine asked.

Nine’s antennae twitched disapprovingly. "You cannot be serious. How do you not know about these games!? I don’t like the water world, but I am familiar with the things that happen here. What kind of repairman is clueless about the biggest events in the galaxy? That is the best season for us repairmen. Gosh, you are so dumb..."

Vortan interrupted because he could sense a fight looming. "It’s like the Olympics games, where you come from. And I have entered into the log, the fact that Nine has called you dumb."

Sunshine nodded and smirked at Nine. Then, she turned her attention back to the Aqua Titans and took a picture. Her kids would be excited to learn about this. Maybe if there was an opportunity in future, they could all come for the games.

"There are so many prestigious creatures here," Vortan said. "That is why the Commander does not want you two to cause any trouble.... especially now. Tone down the hostility and taunting."

"Yes sir." The two repairmen chorused.

A group of Glacis locals glided past the terminal entrance. They were tall, with skin the color of pearls and eyes that shimmered like oil slicks. They wore shimmering, skin-tight sports suits that seemed to change color as they moved. Their tails were split into two or three or any number the owner needed.

"Okay, they are way too cool-looking," Sunshine said, suddenly feeling under dressed in the repairmen suit.

"I cannot wait to get out of here," Nine whispered to her.

Sunshine shoved his shoulder, "Keep your distance from me coward." She turned her attention to Vortan. "Can I stay for a few minutes after the task is done? I want to take a brief tour."

"I do not see why not, just do not commit any crimes." Vortan said as they entered a transport pod.

Sunshine pointed at Nine. "It is him that you should worry about, not me."

"Shut your trap. I have no desire of spending a second longer in this place." He shuddered.

Sunshine laughed in mockery of him. "All this time we have been at loggerheads and all I had to do was throw some water at you to shut you up. Why are you so scared of a little water anyway?"

"A little water? There is a literal ocean over our heads!"

Vortan cleared his throat, pointing toward a shimmering walkway. "Save the bickering for later. We need to move. The King of Glacis doesn’t like to be kept waiting, and he’s even less fond of ’surface-dwellers’ he thinks they are trouble."

Sunshine paused, stealing one final glance at the bioluminescent whales as they drifted lazily through the skyscraper canyons. Harnessed with elegant, high-backed seating, the massive creatures served as living ferries, gliding through the neon-drenched air while passengers looked down from their precarious perches atop the whales.

"Well," she grinned, "This is the best world that I have been to. Everything is just peaceful and beautiful."

The pod hissed to a stop before a set of massive, shimmering gates. They weren’t made of iron or steel, but a translucent, vibrating energy field that made Sunshine’s teeth ache just looking at them.

"We’re here," Vortan said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly bubble.

Sunshine didn’t need him to point out the obvious. The sheer scale of the place screamed ’Royal.’ It looked less like a building and more like a mountain that had been hollowed out and replaced with liquid glass and sea gems.

As they stepped out, a team of security wardens approached. One of them began waving a humming device over Nine’s spiracles. It tickled, and he jumped, accidentally elbowing Sunshine’s in the arm.

"Careful, Nine, and stop the giggling." Sunshine muttered, "Try to act like an adult for five minutes."

"Hold still, Nine," Vortan warned, though he looked just as nervous. He cleared his throat, leaning in as the guards finished their pat-down. "Now, remember_"

"Be well-behaved," Sunshine and Nine chorused in a bored monotone, finishing his sentence for him.

"And don’t touch anything without permission," Vortan added quickly. "Last time a Repairman touched the walls in the West Wing, he ended up fused to a circuit board for three days."

"Note taken," Nine muttered, rubbing his arm. "No wall-hugging."

Once they were cleared, a tall, imposing figure stepped forward. This was Vaelor, the Lead Palace Butler. His armor didn’t clank, it hummed detecting danger, shifting colors from deep violet to a soft gold as he moved.

"Vortan," Vaelor said, a small, knowing smirk tugging at his lips. "Still the man in charge of the new recruits, I see. That promotion continues to evade you."

"Vaelor. Still babysitting royal babies after 200 years, I would hate to be you." Vortan replied, though his posture stayed stiff.

Vaelor gestured for them to follow. As they walked, Sunshine’s jaw practically hit the floor. The interior of the palace was a masterpiece of alien engineering.

Instead of carpet, they walked on solidified light that rippled like water under their boots.

There wasn’t a ceiling. Above them, the sky was visible through a smart atmosphere that filtered the sun into a soothing, amber glow. "How did they do that?" Sunshine asked herself mostly.

Tiny, silver drones_ way smaller than the insect drones she had, zipped around. If not for the system identifying them, she would not have known of their existence.

It seemed like they were being spied on!
