Apocalyptic Rebirth: With a repairman system space, she rises again.-Chapter 592: Swap housing.
Nothing happened. It was as if the Watchers knew they were waiting for something, so they were holding off until the last possible moment.
This allowed the convoy to reach the wall of Kingsbridge. Hades was amazed by what Emily had accomplished in the last week leading up to the fight and her death.
The wall she had created wasn’t visible in the way ordinary walls were. Instead, it was a pile of invisible metals suspended midair. Dust and debris floated against it.
It was like something frozen in time.
What Commander Grayson, Dominic and Major Elio had done was let a team add a big gate where the entrance was. It was attached to parts of two houses, taking the shape of the physical wall they intended to construct.
"How did she do it?" Day asked. "It looks like there is nothing at all. If we had not seen the debris and birds clashing against it, we would not know that there was a barrier at all." 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
Hades shook his head. He had heard about the peculiar wall and decided that the only way to understand it was to see it in person. "If I knew, I would adopt the same method and save my wife the money she spends buying building materials for walls. The more we expand, the more we need to build."
The gates of King’s Bridge hissed shut, sealing out the toxic wasteland and the fear of mutated animals attacking them. As the convoy drove in, people stood by the road_ watching, not that they had much to do. Among them were Vicente’s men, a motley crew of hardened survivors, lined the main drag. They didn’t wave. They didn’t cheer. They just stared with the kind of intense, unblinking focus usually reserved for any suspicious activity that was happening in King’s Bridge.
They took notes about everything that the Fortress four team did and reported it back to Vicente who was still living or hiding out in Ferry Island. The answer depended on who you asked.
The billionaires rolled windows down and poked their heads out of their cars. Most were filled with horror as they glanced at what they saw.
"I do not like what our once beautiful and glorious town has become." Phaedra whispered to Jin, clutching a designer bag that had too many packets of beef jerky. "It has all been destroyed."
"We will change it back babe, trust me" Jin said with uncertainty. He thought rebuilding in an apocalypse had to be handled carefully. If the bubble failed, whatever they built would be destroyed again.
The convoy stopped and Hades stepped down from the car, searching for a familiar face that he found quickly.
Dominic Steward was the one he wanted to see. The man stood proudly at the center of the bustling registration hub. Around him, his team had turned the chaos Emily left into a more civilized community.
High-tech tents made from heavy-duty polymer structures Sunshine had scavenged from the Repair Mall had been set up to solve the problem of limited shelter. People were already living inside.
Hades looked up, frowning at the clear sky. A bubble needed to go up, and soon. Otherwise, all this rebuilding was for nothing.
Dominic approached, looking like he’d been awake since the turn of the century. His eyes were bloodshot, and his iron shirt was covered in a fine layer of grit, but his grip was steady as he shook Hades’ hand.
"You look like hell, Dominic," Hades noted.
"I’ve been managing three thousand people, some of whom all think they’re the main character in the apocalypse," Dominic sighed. Then, his eyes drifted past Hades to the parade of other passenger vehicles and the well-groomed, terrified people stepping out of them. "Them? I smell trouble already. What the hell are they doing away from the safety of the mountain?"
"About them," Hades said shortly. "They’re here to check on their properties...at least those that survived."
Dominic’s hand went to the back of his neck, scratching it slowly. A look of genuine worry crossed his face. "Yeah... about that. We have a giant, life-altering problem."
"What do you mean, a problem?" Hilda Gunning marched forward, her heels clicking aggressively against the ground. Despite the world ending, she managed to look like she was about to demand to see a manager at a five-star resort. "I heard that. What problem?"
Dominic cleared his throat, avoiding her gaze. "Well, Ma’am, Kingsbridge is at capacity. Every standing house, every condo, every surviving basement... it’s all occupied. We’ve got families of ten living in two roomed apartments..."
"What?!" Hilda’s voice hit a frequency that probably shattered glass in the next territory over. "I own a three-story manor on the hill! With a pool and a helipad. Are you telling me that you put strangers in my house!"
"Right, the Gunning manor," Dominic nodded. "That’s currently the infirmary. And the pool? That’s currently dry now. You people are well settled back on the mountain why in God’s name do you need more than one house right now when some people have none!"
"Because they are ours!" Jin shouted.
Dominic let out a demeaning laugh. "You are just selfish, over pampered, douche bags. I do not know why the Quinns are putting up with your nonsense, but I will not."
The silence that followed was heavy enough to sink a ship.
Hades covered the smile forming on his face.
Then, the billionaires exploded.
"I paid eighty-three million for that plot, do you expect me to just let it rot!" Sheldon bellowed, stepping forward and poking a finger toward Dominic’s chest. " I want what is mine, and I want those people out of my backyard!"
"I do not care that they have nowhere to go!" Fergie Sandman cried. "That is none of my business. You have tents, put them there."
Sheldon’s face turned a shade of purple that matched a sky that was threatening to release rain. "I’ll kill for my property. I swear it. If I have to clear that house myself, I’ll do it!"
Hades stepped between the enraged mogul and Dominic, his shadow looming over the smaller man. "Easy, Sheldon. No one is killing anyone today. And Dominic is someone that you should fear because he can make you pee in your pants."
"But Hades!" Sheldon shrieked, only for Hades to shush him.
"Listen up everyone, we all knew that there was no way our houses were still unoccupied." Hades spoke. "In case you forgot, we are living in an apocalypse. You can go take tours at your residences. If occupied give the occupants a notice of at least one year to vacate. Those people should come to the registration desk.....we will find them new accommodation."
"Better still you can swap with them." Dominic said. "You move here; they move to where you are currently living."
Some billionaires shuddered, who would give up their homes on the mountain base? That would be absurd. Suddenly, they were not so sharp tongued anymore. Some just glared at Dominic.
"My decision is made." Hades declared. "If I catch any of you throwing out people from your mansions, I will throw you off the mountain. Now hurry up with that tour you wanted to take."
The billionaires began to move back to their vehicles.
"Be back here in three hours....I am not staying for long, and I will not wait for you." Hades told them.
A voice came through Dominic’s radio. "Sir, Vicente from Ferry Island is here."
