Chapter 600: Catching up.

Nimo stared at her own hand, fascinated and slightly terrified. "Like never happened to me or never happened to anyone in your last life?"

"The last one." Sunshine replied firmly. "I don’t know what to call this superpower. But it’s a big world so who knows what else is out there. Hopefully, you will not transform into a rabbit."

Nimo covered her mouth with her other hand, studying the way the light glinted off the tips of the claws. "Don’t scare me. If I turn into a rabbit, Phillip will grill me over his fire and eat me for lunch. Let’s focus on the big world thing. And I don’t know how the nails work. It just... happens when I tense up....I have to practice I guess."

"How sharp are they?" Hades asked, his tactical brain already whirring. Maybe after the apocalypse, if Nimo had no plans to go back to the army, they could keep her on as a bodyguard with a fat salary.

This way, she would always be close to Dwayne as well. It was a win-win.

"Watch," Nimo said. She reached out and, with the effort of someone cutting through warm butter, dragged two of the claws across the metallic bedside drawer. The metal shrieked as deep, jagged gouges appeared in the steel.

"Stop! Okay, stop!" Sunshine begged, waving her hands. The sound was torture to her ears. "I get the point! Literally! Please take it easy, let’s not damage the hospital furniture just because we are excited or determined to prove a point. Ariel will kill us all with a disappointed gaze before replacing the drawer."

Nimo retracted the claws with another metallic click and did a little seated happy dance, her mood swinging back to excitement. "I’m a literal X-Man, Suni! This is the best worst thing to ever happen to me! This coupled with my acid bombs, I feel invincible. " Then, her expression sharpened. "But enough about me and my changes. Suni, tell me what happened. What happened in the underwater empire where you went?"

Hades pulled up a stool, his eyes dark. "And the Noxians. I need to know if you encountered them again. You sounded a little scared on the phone."

Sunshine took a big bite of her burger, then tore it in half, handing the bigger piece to Hades. He took it without any hesitation; it had been a while since his last meal.

"Okay," Sunshine said, swallowing hard. "Get comfortable. Because it’s a long story." She brought more ready to eat meals from the space, half a burger was not going to satiate her hunger.

For forty minutes, the only sounds in the room were the hum of the medical monitors, the occasional pop of the mutated flowers, and Sunshine’s voice as she laid out the nightmare of what had happened in the Glacian territory. She first eased their minds by telling them that the Noxians couldn’t get to her because she had spent most of her time in the palace.

Then about how Nine had activated the beacon and summoned thousands of years old creatures from their tombs and how she risked her life to fight them. She did not leave out her regret for handing him the beacon in the first place.

Until now, she was filling stupid. It was perhaps the biggest mistake she had made since her rebirth. That and not putting a bullet in Moon’s head on the day of her rebirth.

When she finally stopped talking, the silence that followed was heavy. Hades was the first to break it, his brow furrowed in a way that meant his brain was running a thousand simulations.

"So," Hades said, his voice low and skeptical, "they just let you walk out of there? Even your supervisor did not reprimand or question you?"

Sunshine leaned back, rubbing her eyes. "Both Nine and I were confused by Vortan’s behavior, he was angry that us for sure, but he did not ask us any questions. I am sure he has an inkling of what happened. The council will question us for sure, sooner or later.

And as for the Glacis, they couldn’t keep anyone there against their wish, especially not a repairman. It was too chaotic; they had many tourists to evacuate and question. Besides, Nine and I have legit addresses, registered repairman licenses, they know where to find us in case they need to."

Nimo scoffed, "And you trust that insect to keep your secret? One punch and he will bubble the truth out. I cannot believe that you are all buddy-buddy with him now and keeping secrets."

"You sound jealous." Sunshine said, laughing lightly.

"Of a bug!?" Nimo waved dismissively, "Never."

Hades let out a sigh. "He sounded very friendly on the phone; this might be the test of your newfound friendship."

"But," Nimo said picking a stray fry off her blanket and pointing it at Sunshine like a weapon. "Still... an investigation is ongoing, Suni! Anything can happen. You said those people .... or fish have tech we haven’t even dreamed of. They could trace that beacon signature back to the museum, and then what? What is the worst that could happen to you? We need to be prepared."

Sunshine shrugged.

Nimo cursed under her breath, her new metallic claws twitching involuntarily. "I always knew that bug would land you in hot soup."

Sunshine let out a heavy sigh, her gaze drifting to the petals of the flowers. "It wasn’t entirely Nine’s fault, Nimo. I was the one that handed him the beacon because I thought he had information on the Watchers.

Everything happened so fast after that. And if I’m being honest with myself... I wanted to know about the beacon. Deep down, I needed to see what kind of weapon it was. I just didn’t think it would be that deadly. Curiosity killed the cat, right?"

"Luckily," Hades said, reaching over to squeeze her hand, "this cat has many lives left. And it’s actually a good thing you found out what it was. Especially after what happened in Ferry Island."

Sunshine frowned, looking between her husband and her best friend. "Ferry Island? What happened there? Rori told me that you had gone there."

Nimo raised her phone, the screen reflecting in her dark eyes. "With these," she said, wiggling the device, "news around here travels fast. These nurses sure do love to gossip about everything. Rumor has it that the beacon summons creatures from another world. Someone claimed that it summons demons." She rolled her eyes.

Sunshine thought about the Deep Tailed Burners. Not demons but still just as bad.

Hades leaned in, his expression darkening as he filled in the blanks. He told her about the chaos, and the pregnant woman.

"So, where is this pregnant woman now?" Sunshine asked, her maternal instincts instantly flaring up.

"She’s in Kingsbridge town," Hades answered. "Under tight security. Sheldon wanted her dead_ surprise, surprise_ but Raydon stood his ground and protected her. He also insisted she needed better medical care. The question is what to do with her now."
