Chapter 117 - 117

It has been ten years since we got our powers. To be more precise, we got our old powers back. Except that all foxes are very good at hiding themselves by creating illusions. In ten years, Azula and I had learned a few things, so hiding our tails and ears wasn't a problem for us. So we didn't draw much attention to ourselves and just walked around and looked at the Republic City. And there was a lot to see.

Where there used to be an arena for the Mage Tournament, there was now a huge tree, a hundred meters tall, with roots stretching out a kilometer in diameter. Ten years ago, the city had almost been destroyed, but now it had grown even more, completely surrounding the tree and its roots.

Except I knew exactly what that tree was, just as I knew it shouldn't be in our world. It is the one that causes an increase in the energy background from which mages lose their abilities.

Fifty years from now, there will be no mages left in the world, and the world will go downhill. War and chaos. All in all, not the best outlook. But now everyone believes in a bright future and hopes for the best.

We walked around the city for a week, enjoying all the delights of tourists. We did not count money at all, because we had a lot of it, so we had fun.

I went out of the city at night and used seismic vision to look for huge cavities in the ground. This is the only skill in earth magic that has not lost its effectiveness. And after ten days, I found what I was looking for.

Beneath the earth was a huge prison containing not only Kuvira, but several other people as well. I was still only interested in Kuvira. I didn't come up with a plan, I just swam through the earth and reached the metal frame.

It was purified metal, but not completely, and so I was able, albeit weakly, to make a hole to get through. Immediately, I found myself in a cave with a metal cage suspended from the ceiling by chains. The cage could only be opened with metal magic and only from the outside.

So I flew up to the cage, opened it and flew inside, closing the door behind me, having previously frozen ice on the necessary mechanisms.

Kuvira looked pitiful. Thin, battered, and nearly broken. I lit a light, dispersing the darkness in the cell with my red fire.

«Hello Kuvira», I murmured, sitting down on the floor. I could sense she was awake, but she kept pretending to be asleep, «I know you're awake, so stop pretending.»

«And what does a little boy like that need in the cage of a criminal like me?» she asked, getting up and sitting down, but not opening her eyes.

«To get answers, to questions that interest me», though she didn't see it, I shrugged.

«Ask, maybe I'll answer», she smiled cheekily, but it looked pathetic.

«Who is responsible for opening the portal and summoning the Tree of Peace?» I asked, the most important question of all. Although I hadn't hoped for an answer, I got one.

«It's hard to say exactly who the culprit is», she smiled, «Do you know exactly how it was created?»

«No, just the fact of its discovery», I shook my head, but again she didn't see it.

«At the end of our battle, I made a mistake and fired the cannon at the Avatar», she spoke slowly, as if lost in her memories, «Only the cannon was attached to vines that began to feed the cannon at the time of the shot, and it couldn't stop firing. I fell and the energy beam should have killed me, but the Avatar saved me and protected me. I don't know what happened next, because there was an explosion and I was blinded by the light. When I came to, both the portal and the tree were gone», I got the answer, so basically there was no point in me staying here anymore, nor was there any point in keeping Kuvira alive, but she continued, «Except the culprit is not only me, but Yoko as well», I raised an eyebrow in confusion, but again no one saw it.

«Why?» I still asked as the pause continued.

«Because he decapitated an entire empire by killing the queen and telling everyone about it, causing chaos», I grinned. It was a good blow to society and a decaying state. If I hadn't done it, someone else would have. «I volunteered to clean it up. Province by province, I united the entire land empire. Sometimes by force and blackmail, but united. And helped the people by distributing resources and technology equally. Once unified, all that was needed was to create a strong economic foundation, and the greatness of the people of the land would soar.»

«Just like Kyoshi Island», I smiled.

«Exactly», she smiled again, «He was my role model. Yoko clearly showed what magic can do in good hands. Of course, mine can't be called that, but there were many worthy people in my charge who were worthy.»

«Except that you chose the wrong way to unite and became known as a bloodthirsty tyrant rather than a savior», I added a sarcastic note to my voice this time, so that even with my eyes closed, she understood the mockery.

«I realize that now. But at the time, there was simply no other choice», she shook her head, «So the real reason why I did what I did is Yoko, an enemy of humanity.»

«What a catchy title», I grinned, «Except it's not me, so others would have done the same. Their goals might have been different, but the result would have been the same.»

«That's a big name for a boy like you», she said ironically, «I can hear in your voice that you weren't even here when those events happened.»

«That's right, I wasn't», I stood up and walked over to her, «Except did you really think I was that easy to kill?»

A moment and I put my thumb to her forehead and chest. Blocking magic is easy enough, so after a few moments, Kuvira was left without magic. To support her, I lifted her with blood magic and drained her elemental nerve completely. Now she was no longer a mage.

«No way», she muttered when I turned her around and she saw me.

«As you can see, it is possible», I smiled into her face.

«But how?» she asked in a whisper, not reacting to what was hanging in the air. I, on the other hand, put it down and sat down across from her again.

«An old ritual», I shrugged. Telling her is okay, since her health is completely compromised and she only has a few years to live.

«Then why was all this necessary?» she ran her hands through her hair.

«Azula was pregnant», Kuvira looked at me in shock, «I wanted to keep her safe, but the island was being infiltrated by whoever was around. Word of mouth, a few careless phrases and a stupid act and there was war.»

«You started it on purpose», she guessed, looking at me in shock.

«Exactly. And I had only one goal. To show everyone that my family was not to be messed with. And in the Queen's palace I delivered that message to every mind on the planet», I smiled, «And so well that the whole world turned against me. And even then, when I was killed, I won, for my goal was safe, and the only one who could ruin everything was...»

«... Avatar», Kuvira realized again, delighting me with her intelligence, «But she's alive.»

«And that's the funny thing», I smiled smugly, «Korra is the bearer of the Spirit of Order, Rava. However, I pulled Rava out of Korra and essentially destroyed her», I looked into her shocked eyes, «Since Rava has been in Korra since she was a child, her energy has rearranged a bit and she has been able to keep in touch with past avatars. But when she dies, the world will lose an Avatar forever. So she is the last of the ordinary people who can use all four elements.»

«But why did you win?» she asked, managing herself.

«Because I got what I wanted», I shrugged calmly, «I survived, secured my wife and our child, achieved complete isolation of the island, got the magic back for my people. That's why», I stood up and opened the doors with water magic, «One more thing. I've examined you. You only have a few years left to live. I've also stripped you of your magic. So go crazy here alone.»

And closed the door, hearing the desperate scream of a broken woman. I don't want to kill women, but I had to take revenge on her, because the blame for Linya's child lies in her hands.
