Awakened: SSS Ranked Soul king-Chapter 49: The First Man to Write in Heaven
The history of the blacksmith and the calligraphy index were rather boring, filled with countless technical details and why they were what they were.
Aside from that, of course, there was a lot of valuable information inside both; for example, Guilliman was introduced to inscriptions on the fourth page of the history of the blacksmith.
Inscriptions were a form of empowerment humans had come up with hundreds of years ago, or, according to the old man, were rediscovered.
It allowed for human slayers blessed with particular Affinities to imbue man-made weapons with the output of that ability using symbols.
In essence it was humanity’s solution to the scarcity of beast echoes.
Yes, beast echoes were incredibly scarce in the grand scheme of things. The sheer number of beasts Guilliman had killed all throughout Clawwood Forest could not accurately represent the amount of beast echoes he had. That’s saying a lot because the number should be in the hundreds, from the black blade rabbits to the swordfish, and even the mutant Torties.
All of those, and he only had 3 beast echoes.
Then there was the vast majority of slayers who couldn’t even kill a single beast on their own. Having an echo was a privilege that Guilliman was just realizing he had.
The majority of slayers did not have this privilege, so they had to depend on these man-made weapons with inscriptions on them.
’That really puts things into perspective,’ Guilliman mused, his horizons had been broadened.
As for the calligraphy index, it was more of a theoretical manual of how to write inscriptions, the logic behind how they worked, and the process of taking up an inscription pen.
According to the old man, this was the grand basis of being an inscriber; with knowledge from the book, one would fail horribly… He used the example of a failed inscription developing problems while one was in the sky to scare Guilliman into taking it seriously.
After a while he finished it, but that was when he realized it was nighttime.
"Uhh, I should head back," Guilliman said, feeling like he had overstayed.
"No, no need, finish the one first, I’m sure you’ll find it way more interesting…" the old man’s eyes still shone as if a few minutes had passed.
"I’ll give you a hint, it has to do with your Arcane affinity…" the man added, if the other books were bait to pull Guilliman in, this last book would be the hook.
"Ahhh, I see… if it’s not an inconvenience, then okay," Guilliman’s eyes shone; if just normal inscriptions were this useful, he could only imagine how arcane inscriptions would be.
However, upon opening the book named Formal Master of Heaven, he was shocked to find out that it wasn’t some sort of manual of history book. Instead, it was a story.
The story of a human with the title "the first man to write in heaven"—the book followed the life of a traveling stranger who seemingly appeared out of nowhere with an empty book.
Wherever he went, he helped people, be it by healing the sick in the area, building a bridge in a dangerous stream, or killing a dangerous beast.
He was a hero of sorts, but one thing he had that most heroes didn’t was his tendency to solve a problem and give the solution to the people in terms of a strange writing. It usually took a while to understand the writing, but after they did, they would be able to solve the problems themselves.
As he moved through the lands, he did the same thing over and over again for close to a thousand years, gaining prominence and prestige as the savior of humanity.
However, legends die, and soon the man grew ill from an unknown illness no one could solve, except him. But when asked to heal himself, he simply refused, leaving some words before surprisingly disintegrating into sparks of energy.
Throughout the session, Guilliman’s eyes shone with a resplendent glow. One filled with intrigue and amazement. He didn’t look so different from the old man.
Soon, morning came and Guilliman finished the book with a heavy sigh.

"The world does not withhold its power. Through the Arcane, you shall glimpse knowledge, wield power, and grasp the inner workings of all that is and will be."
He muttered, recounting the last words of the man in the story. He couldn’t understand if this was a true story or just something written by the old man… however, it echoed through his very being.
’Only in the untouched sanctuary can such knowledge exist.’
Guilliman grew up on stories of this mythical place, a place not touched by the galaxy. In fact, there were several debates put across to him by his father which sounded a bit absurd then but now… didn’t.
"What do you think, kid? You want to learn arcane inscriptions now?" The old Devil said with absolute confidence.
Unlike the other two, this kid here understood this story a lot more. The look on his eyes told it all. He was enthralled by the arcane.
"Very much," Guilliman nodded.
"But we’ll have to make it snappy, I’ll be leaving for the Yellow Gate in around two weeks tops," Guilliman added, feeling some bitterness in his mouth. He had a feeling that if he didn’t learn this now, he wouldn’t have a chance in the future because he would be dead.
It was an extremely strange feeling, one he had never had before.
"Ahh? You’re going to that dreadful place? Why?" The old devil asked, feeling a bit disappointed. Arcane inscriptions couldn’t be taught in a measly few weeks; it took those shit heads outside months before they could inscribe the basics, and this kid wanted to achieve something much harder in two weeks?
That was insane!!
"I… have to become strong very soon, if not I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to stand myself," Guilliman said.
In as much as he wasn’t an official member of Victoria’s cohort, he owed her a lot. Without her father’s presence, he had no doubt that the Blacksteel lord would have found a way to fuck him over.
Aside from that… there was still the matter of his younger sister Caroline
