Chapter 241: Creature of Night [5]

Shlrrrkk!

The sound of tearing flesh filled the air.

Vivienne’s eyes went wide.

Blood bubbled up from her lips, spilling down her chin.

Alaric’s eyes narrowed. His head snapped down, looking at her stomach.

A tail.

Long, sinuous, ending in a wickedly sharp point—like a scorpion’s stinger—peeking out from Vivienne’s abdomen. It had punched clean through from behind, the tip dripping crimson.

As he watched, it retracted with a wet squelch.

Vivienne made a strangled sound. More blood poured from her mouth.

Alaric’s gaze followed the tail as it withdrew, tracking its path to a figure.

Standing on the rooftop of a nearby building, silhouetted against the breaking clouds. The tail swayed behind her, playful and deadly.

"Hi!" The voice was bright, cheerful, childish, completely at odds with what had just happened.

Alaric released Vivienne. She crumpled to the ground, gasping weakly, clutching her stomach. Her consciousness was slipping, blood pooling beneath her.

"You dare?" Alaric hissed low, dangerous.

The figure tilted her head, almost innocent. "What? Didn’t you just say she was disposable? You were trying to kill her anyway. I just—"

"Who gave you permission," Alaric cut her off, "To mess with my toys?" 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Silence.

Then the figure giggled.

The sound was delighted, amused, like she’d just heard the funniest joke.

The clouds drifted further apart. Moonlight spilled down, illuminating the rooftop clearly.

And Alaric saw her.

She looked young, maybe fifteen, sixteen at most.

Her skin was pale—not sickly, but porcelain-smooth, almost luminescent in the moonlight.

Like marble carved by a master’s hand.

Her silver hair cascaded down past her shoulders in waves, moved in a wind that wasn’t there, alive and serpentine.

Her eyes were the most striking feature.

Large, almond-shaped, crimson eyes with slit pupils.

The irises were a vivid violet that seemed to glow faintly, swirling with colors that shouldn’t exist—purple bleeding into red, then back again.

She wore black dress, clinging to her slim frame.

Her features were delicate, beautiful in an unsettling way. Too perfect. Too symmetrical. Like a doll come to life.

Small horns curved back from her temples, disappearing into her hair.

She smiled, revealing teeth that were just slightly too sharp.

"So what?" she said playfully, swinging her legs as she sat on the roof’s edge.

Alaric turned fully toward the girl, his hand rising.

Lightning began to crackle along his fingers.

"Don’t think I’ll let you pass just because you’re a child," he said coldly.

The figure tilted her head.

"Is that so?"

Her smile widened. And eyes flared, intensifying, becoming almost blinding.

Alaric’s breath hitched.

THUMP!

His heart skipped a beat, vision blurred. The lightning crackling around his hand sputtered and died.

What the?

His legs gave out, eyes rolled back, and he collapsed, hitting the cobblestones hard, completely unconscious.

The girl sat on the rooftop, swinging her legs, watching him fall.

"Humans are so fragile," she said to no one in particular, her childish voice filled with amusement.

Her tail swished behind her, painting lazy patterns in the air.

She looked down at the scene and giggled.

"Fun time is over," she said cheerfully.

And her tail shot forward like a spear, aiming straight for Alaric’s unconscious form.

But then. It stopped.

Just inches from his skull.

"Oh!" The girl raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised.

Shadowed hands had erupted from the ground, gripping her tail with crushing force.

She thrashed her tail violently, shattering the shadow hands like glass, who dissolved into wisps of darkness.

The tail retracted, swishing behind her again.

She giggled, turning her gaze toward a dark alley to her left.

"You’ve got a strong grip," she called out playfully.

A figure emerged from there, stepping into the moonlight.

Wearing a traveling cloak that billowed slightly in the wind. Midnight blue hair cascaded down her back, catching the light like dark water. Her eyes were violet, sharp, calculating, and utterly cold.

The girl tilted her head, still sitting on the edge of the rooftop with her legs swinging. She propped her elbow on her knee, resting her cheek in her palm, humming softly.

"Who are you?" she asked, smiling sweetly.

Nyra paused. Her eyes swept the scene, the burning carriage, the corpses, the blood-soaked cobblestones.

Then Alaric, unconscious on the ground.

Her jaw tightened.

She looked back up at the girl.

"What are you doing here?" Nyra’s voice came flat, dangerous.

The girl continued swinging her legs, humming. "You answer my question first."

"Get out of here."

The girl’s smile widened. "What if I don’t want to?"

"Then I’ll make you."

For a moment, silence hung between them.

Then the girl laughed and snapped her fingers.

SIZZLE! SILZZE!

Dark projectiles materialized above her head. And launched, screaming through the air toward Nyra.

But Nyra didn’t flinch.

Didn’t move.

Just as the projectiles were about to strike.

SHRRRRIP!

Two massive bat wings erupted from her back, tearing through her cloak.

They were black as midnight, leathery, with wicked claws at each joint.

The wings swept forward in a single, devastating slash.

CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!

Every projectile shattered on impact.

Nyra’s wings folded back slightly, framing her like a dark angel.

"Back off," she said coldly, her eyes narrowed.

"Mother of Demons."

The girl stopped swinging her legs.

"Lilith!"

Her smile grew wider, more predatory.

Lilith stood slowly, gracefully. Her nails extended, growing into black claws that gleamed in the moonlight. Her tail swished behind her, eager, hungry.

"Even knowing who I am," Lilith purred, "You still stand in my way?"

Her eyes gleamed with anticipation.

And she lunged.

Her claws extended toward...

Nyra smirked.

She raised one hand lazily.

"Bold of you to assume."

The ground beneath them changed into pitch black, like a hole had opened in reality itself.

The darkness spread outward in a perfect circle, consuming cobblestones, blood, rain.

"You should know better," Nyra stepped forward slowly, her wings spreading wider.

"Than to hunt a creature of the night..."

Lilith’s eyes widened mid-leap.

Multiple tendrils erupted from the blackened ground, thick, serpentine, made of solidified darkness and moved with terrifying speed.

"...In the dead of night."
