Chapter 322: Lilith [4]

Thaddeus and Serana stood before a modest cottage, nestled in a valley far from any civilization.

The structure was simple. Stone walls. Thatched roof. A small garden plot that had gone wild from neglect. Windows with glass. A chimney that suggested working fireplace inside.

Modest was generous. Adequate might be more accurate.

Thaddeus’s eyes swept across the property, taking in every detail. The isolation. The defensive limitations. The sheer ordinariness of it.

"We’ll be living here?" His tone carried disbelief.

"Shut the fuck up, bloodsucker!" Lilith’s voice snapped from beside them, her childlike form practically vibrating with irritation.

"Be grateful with what you got! Do you have any idea how hard it was to find a place far enough from demon territory that my subjects won’t accidentally stumble across you, but close enough that I can visit without major inconvenience?!"

"It’s a shack—"

"It’s shelter! With running water! And—"

"It doesn’t even have proper defensive formations—"

"Then make some yourself! Or did House Crimsonveil only teach you how to complain?!"

They glared at each other. Thaddeus’s copper eyes blazing with frustration. Lilith’s crimson ones burning with genuine offense.

Serana sighed, the long-suffering sound of someone who’d been listening to this for the past weeks.

"Stop. Both of you."

Her hand rested on her stomach, considerably larger now.

Her appearance had shifted over time. Gradually at first, then accelerating in the past months.

Her silver hair—once pure, unmarked—now showed streaks of black running through it. Like ink bleeding into water, the darkness had spread strand by strand until nearly half her hair carried the new color.

And her eyes. Her black eyes—solid darkness with no visible whites—had begun showing flecks of crimson. Red bleeding into the black like distant stars emerging in night sky.

She looked radiant. More beautiful than Thaddeus had ever seen her. Pregnancy suited her in ways that transcended simple physical changes. There was light to her now. Warmth. Life.

Both Thaddeus and Lilith turned toward her, their argument momentarily forgotten.

"Thank you," Serana said, addressing Lilith directly. "For everything. The cottage. The protection. The..." She gestured vaguely at the months of arrangements. "All of it. We know it wasn’t easy."

Lilith’s irritation melted immediately. Her expression softened into something genuinely affectionate.

"Of course, Sery," she said, moving closer and pulling Serana into careful embrace, mindful of the pregnancy, of the fragility that came with carrying new life. "You’re my best friend. I’d do anything for you."

She paused, then added with pointed look at Thaddeus, "Even tolerate him."

Serana returned the hug, her face pressing against Lilith’s white hair. "I know. And I love you for it."

They held each other for long moment.

When they finally separated, Lilith reached into pocket of her flowing dress and withdrew something... a small pendant on silver chain.

The surface was carved with symbols that pulsed faintly with essence.

"Here," she said, pressing it into Serana’s hands. "Emergency summoning artifact. If you ever need me for any reason, just activate it and I’ll be here within minutes. Labor. Danger. Or just needing someone to complain to about your insufferable baby-daddy."

Serana laughed, soft, genuine sound that had become rare over the past year. "Thank you, Lily."

"Always." Lilith pressed kiss to her forehead. Then stepped back, her form already beginning to dissolve into shadow. "Now go. Get settled. Rest. Growing a baby is exhausting work, and you look ready to drop."

"Gee, thanks."

"You know what I mean!" Lilith’s grin widened. Then she looked at Thaddeus one final time. "Take care of her, bloodsucker. Or I’ll make you regret it in ways your worst nightmares can’t imagine."

"Understood," Thaddeus replied simply.

Lilith vanished completely. Just shadow dispersing on wind, leaving no trace she’d been there.

Serana and Thaddeus stood alone before their new home.

"Shall we?" Serana gestured at the cottage door.

Thaddeus offered his arm. She took it. And together they walked inside.

----

Time moved differently in isolation.

Days blurred together. Thaddeus reinforced defensive formations around the cottage. Serana nested, organizing their limited possessions, preparing space for a child, doing all the small tasks that expectant mothers had done since time immemorial.

Her hair completed its transformation. Fully black now. Every strand. The silver completely consumed by darkness that somehow made her more beautiful rather than less.

Her eyes finished their shift too. No more black. Just crimson. Deep, blood-red crimson with vertical slit pupils.

And then, nine months after that desperate night in the cave, nine months after divine intervention and impossible choices—

Labor began.

Sharp pain that doubled Serana over mid-step. Her hand clutched her stomach, gasping, eyes going wide.

"Thaddeus..." Her voice was strained. "Now!"

He was beside her instantly. Supporting her weight. Helping her to the bedroom they’d prepared. Activating the summoning pendant with pulse of essence...

Lilith appeared within seconds. Materializing directly in the cottage bedroom with expression that was equal parts excitement and concern.

"Finally!" She moved to Serana’s side immediately, her hands already glowing with essence meant for healing, for assisting, for protecting.

"Took you long enough! I’ve been waiting for weeks!"

What followed was hours of pain, effort, and desperate work. Thaddeus held Serana’s hand, letting her crush his fingers when contractions peaked.

Lilith provided essence support, easing the process, ensuring complications didn’t arise, keeping both mother and child alive through delivery.

And finally—

A cry.

Small. Angry.

Serana collapsed back against pillows, exhausted beyond measure, her black hair plastered to her forehead with sweat.

Lilith caught the baby with practiced ease.

She cleaned him quickly. Then wrapped him in soft cloth and placed him carefully in Serana’s arms.

Serana looked down at her son and wept in happy tears. The kind that came from holding something impossibly precious after months of fear that he wouldn’t survive, that the pregnancy would fail, that all of this would end in tragedy.

But he was here. Alive. Perfect. Small but healthy, with dark hair like hers and crimson eyes.

She kissed his head.

"Hello," she whispered. "Hello, little one. I’m your mother. And I love you. So, so much."

Lilith watched with expression that was surprisingly soft. Not her usual playful mask. Just... genuine happiness for her friend.

Then she reached out with grabby hands. "My turn! Let me hold him!"

"Lily, he was just born—"

"Exactly! Which means I need to establish the ’fun aunt’ relationship immediately! Give him here!"

Serana sighed but handed over her son carefully.

Lilith took him with surprising gentleness, cradling him against her chest, her eyes tracking every detail of his small face.

"Hello, tiny vampire," she cooed, her voice taking on that childish tone. "I’m Auntie Lily. I’m going to spoil you rotten and teach you all sorts of inappropriate things your parents will hate. It’ll be wonderful."

"Lily!" Serana warned.

But Lilith was already playing, making faces at the baby, adjusting his wrappings, being simultaneously careful and playful in that uniquely Lilith way.

Then she leaned down and pressed long, exaggerated kiss to his tiny cheek. The baby made small noise, not crying, just... existing. Processing this strange world he’d been born into.

"Perfect," Lilith declared. Then handed him back to Serana with exaggerated reluctance as the latter had been glaring hard.

"Fine. Take your baby back. But I get regular visitation rights! This is non-negotiable!"

Serana took her son back with smile. "Of course, Lily. You’re family."

Thaddeus had been standing at slight distance, giving them space, letting the women handle the immediate aftermath. But now he stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the small bundle in Serana’s arms.

She looked up at him and smiled. Extended their son toward him. "Would you like to hold him?"

Thaddeus’s hands were surprisingly steady as he took his child. Lifted him carefully. Looked down at that tiny face and felt something in his chest that he thought had died with his first family.

Love.

"He’s perfect," he whispered. "You did amazingly, Serana. He’s perfect."

He held his son. His living son. Proof that something good could emerge from all the death and loss and tragedy. That life continued even when it seemed impossible.

And then he remembered. Words spoken by Tiamat months ago. A name that had echoed in his consciousness ever since.

He looked at Lilith. Then at Serana. Then back at his son.

"Brandon Azra’kharzeth."

The name settled over the room like pronouncement.

Lilith’s eyes widened slightly. Recognition flickering across her features. "That’s... quite a name."

"It’s what he’s meant to be called," Thaddeus said simply. "I know it. I just... know."

Serana studied her son...

Brandon.

Testing the name. Finding it fit better than she’d expected.

"Brandon," she repeated softly. "Yes. That’s... that’s right."

---

Leaning against the wall at the corner of the room...

Alaric smirked.

"Oh..." His voice was quiet. Amused.

"So these are your memories... Brandon."
