Chapter 115: Business man

Temur looked at me. "That is a threat."

I walked toward the guard until my pointed sword touched his chest and asked, "Do you know anything about the Chaos Cult?"

The guard’s shock was immediate. "You’re a spy!" That was all he managed to say before his sword was slapped aside and something cold and sharp sliced his throat.

"This is war with the Chaos Cult. We’ll kill all of you, bastard," I said.

Temur chuckled. "You mean we’ll kill those our powers can reach."

"Well, most Iron can’t fight us on equal footing," I said. "Think of it this way: once we’re silver, we’ll go after those bastard Cult members in silver rank."

Even now, the quality of our Grimoire set us apart from Awakeners of the same rank. The difference would only become more pronounced as we advanced.

We continued like this as we made our way toward the smaller building. The path had been left untended, weeds snagging at our feet. I knew it was intentional, a ruse to make the building seem unimportant. Meanwhile, it was where all the slaves had been sent.

’I can’t believe all this is possible because of Thayer using his money. We wouldn’t have been able to spy or make moves like this otherwise. Again and again, money proves to be something I will always yearn for,’ I realized. I wouldn’t only go after strength, I had to be rich too. Finesse.

"Huh? What do you say? Okay," Temur stopped as we got close enough to see that the black paint on the building was faded and that there was no guard. "They must be so confident they don’t even need strong security."

"Or maybe they want us here, and the trap is already laid?" I said, offering nothing helpful. But the thought ran through both our minds, tonight, either we save Litha or we die trying. There was no other way.

We threw banter back and forth, pretending to stall, but in truth, we were waiting for confirmation from Thayer. Inside, he would confirm only one thing, was Kaelith at the party?

Once that was confirmed, he would activate an artifact even the Necromancer would struggle to escape. And if Kaelith decided to show his power among other silver Awakeners?

I couldn’t help but smile. How would he fight his way out of that? The guests were Awakeners too.

Temur and I stiffened simultaneously as the arena changed; the air hummed and raised goosebumps on our skin. The shields around the main building had been set in place.

Meaning we could proceed with the rescue without fear of the Necromancer.

"Let’s go," Temur said, his voice short with tension. All our plans rested on the hope that Litha was in the smaller building.

We approached cautiously. No visible guard didn’t mean none were present. I covered my eyes with Unholy magic and froze at what I saw. After discovering that my magic could detect spirits and things related to the dead, I had been practicing constantly.

"Why do you stop?" Temur whispered.

I shuddered and quickly cut off the mana from my eyes. "That building is soaked in blood. It isn’t letting them go even in death. Hundreds... no, thousands of spirits, all screaming. This is not a good place."

Temur said nothing, but his resolve hardened. "Then we will make sure this building isn’t used like this again."

We stood in front of the rusted metal door and checked for magic traps, but found none. Either it was Ed, or they simply weren’t skilled enough. I couldn’t tell, so I kicked the door in.

I jumped back, ready for an ambush, but nothing came. Only warm light spilled out. I exchanged looks with Temur and shrugged. "Only one way to find out."

Inside, it looked like a place to sit and read on a cold day, cramped, with bookshelves, two rocking chairs, and tables. Warm yellow crystal gave soft light.

Everything seemed used and lived in, as if the occupants had just stepped out. That only heightened my suspicion. "If this is really where we’re looking, then the screaming spirits are either lost... or..."

Temur raised his hand, his eyes glowing red, scanning for unseen traces that led to the central table. He crouched and moved it aside, along with the fur carpet underneath. "Really," he muttered.

I shared his sentiment. "A trap door under the table. So originally. Maybe it was built like this before they occupied the place."

We lowered ourselves inside, me first, to light the way. My Unholy magic cast a bright green glow, not sharp, but enough to see.

"Should we lock this thing?" Temur asked midway down the ladder, pointing at the trapdoor.

"Maybe? Doesn’t matter, does it? Just do it. It’ll provide a fake illusion anyway."

"Alright," he said. I was surprised as we found ourselves inside a long cave tunnel. I had expected a secret hallway with smooth stone walls and floor.

I was just as surprised, behind us was a dead end. So we took the only way forward. "Well, I guess they don’t want their secret revealed. That’s why they didn’t employ crafters to do the work properly. They won’t bother after today." .

Thayer is the richest here tonight and he made sure everyone knew it. Everything he wore was brought back from a very high floor, made from materials that they all envied.

He didn’t know the reason for this party exactly. Except for the part that he forced it by spreading rumors for the past two weeks that Lord Ola has gone so broke he couldn’t afford a party.

Rumors like that it’s not put down can and will affect one’s image, especially when you’re trying to capture the eyes of investors. Lord Ola is a businessman, even though he’s also a rotten-to-the-core bastard of a Cult member.

Thayer didn’t want to get involved with the Chaos Cult because they could ruin him, but then, he always liked just a hint of danger in anything he did.

They have that aura of danger around them. The amount he’s spent on this case should but a floor. Thayer smiled at his thoughts. Maybe not a floor, but a quarter?
