Chapter 129: Trigger word? Yes!

"How couldn’t that be? You know me. I am not short of being a ruffian. I never dealt with women closely before. Maybe I never realized but something that I have done must have made Helena not like me?" Merlin continued his pessimistic thoughts.

Dawn really wanted to cry now. "Boss!! What are you talking about? Just think of all the times you had met Miss Helena before. When had she not smiled happily when she talked to you? She even addressed you as her brother before even knowing the relationship between you two. This is fate bringing you two together all along. So, please give Miss Helena some time so she can think of how to bring this topic with you, okay?"

"Huh?" Merlin looked at him in a daze for a second before he recovered. "You mean she is just thinking about how to bring the topic up with me? Yes, you are right. According to her, I don’t know anything about this DNA test. I would be shocked no matter how she brings the topic up, right? Yes. Yes. That’s it. Will she think that I was angry for going behind my back to get my DNA sample? But I am not angry with her. But how to tell her that?"

"Uhh..." Dawn was stumped by his boss’s strange thought process. He sighed to himself for the umpteenth time before saying, "Boss, we don’t have to tell her anything right now. Once Miss Helena decides to speak with you, then you can say whatever you want. Until then, we just have to wait."

"Wait? Yes. I have to wait." Merlin nodded. His eyes subconsciously fell on his phone on the desk. He had a face of crying as he took the phone into his hand and said, "But it is very difficult to wait. I never knew that waiting was this tough. Why is it like this?"

"Umm..." How should Dawn answer that? He doesn’t know. So, he decided to keep mum.

Merlin wasn’t exactly expecting an answer from him either. He was just expressing his frustration regarding the matter.

So he placed the phone back on the desk and closed his eyes. ’Out of sight, out of mind.’

***

Vernon was sitting in his room. He thought of the day’s events.

He couldn’t help but recall how happy Helena was when she found the DNA results.

Her smile widened so much, and her cheeks flushed in excitement. Her eyes were so bright that they could fill the entire universe within them.

No matter how hard Vernon tried, he couldn’t forget that face.

That only made him regret that the Helena from his past life never got the chance to feel as happy.

(Helena from the past? Didn’t I meet her today?)

The thought made him freeze.

Yes, he could still meet the Helena from the past and give her the good news, right?

Maybe, the coldness in her eyes would dissipate after listening to this news? Finding her brother might warm her hardened heart a little?

As his thoughts progressed, the hope in his heart continued to grow.

(The idea of meeting the Helena from the past is good. But the problem is... How? Every time she comes, she would come at random and leave the same way as well. What should I do?)

He thought of the problem for a long while. He almost became bald from scratching his head.

(No! Let’s think carefully. Maybe, making a chart of every time she appeared might give me a clue?)

Vernon decided to get to the bottom of this and meet the Helena from the past.

He took a sheet of paper and a pen.

He recalled every single time Helena appeared in front of him. He thought of what they had talked about before that might have triggered that Helena to appear.

He wrote the times when Helena appeared and the few important words he had spoken before that happened.

(There should be a trigger word.)

After writing everything on the paper, his eyes widened.

The trigger word was very clear.

It appeared in each and every conversation he had with Helena.

He used his pen to circle the word that was more than apparent as the trigger to bring out the Helena from the past.

DIVORCE.

(Whenever I talked about divorce, Helena was there with her cold eyes, scolding me. It happened every time except the first time. I wonder if it was correct or not.)

Vernon couldn’t help but doubt the possibility.

Even though ’Divorce’ looked like the sureshot trigger word, there definitely is a possibility that it could be wrong as well.

He had to try it once before he could confirm his suspicions.

He heard the sound of the door opening from outside, and he folded the papers in front of him in a hurry, stuffed them in a drawer before rushing out of his room.

"You are home?" He greeted Helena with a smile.

"Yes." Helena gave a small smile filled with exhaustion. Because they decided to go on honeymoon, she had to finish all her work before leaving. So she was very tired after a long day at work.

"Tired?" Vernon asked in concern as he moved towards her.

"Hmm." Helena nodded and leaned against his shoulder.

They had been friends since they were kids. They were always close and never shy with each other for simple physical contact.

Vernon habitually wrapped his arm around her shoulder to give her support and guided her to her room.

He helped her sit on her bed and knelt in front of her before helping her take off her shoes.

Then he went ahead and removed her watch and bracelets from her wrists. He helped her take off everything that he could help with.

Helena sat on her bed obediently and let him do his thing.

Once he was done, she smiled at him, "Thank you."

Vernon casually waved his hand and left the room.

Helena thought that he went back to his room and fell on her bed carelessly. She was too tired to sit straight anymore.

A couple of minutes later, the door opened again, and Vern entered with a glass of water and a bowl filled with some food.

"Up," He said. He placed the glass and bowl on the side table, sat beside her, and pulled a pillow to place it behind her back and then pulled her to sit up.

"Mmmm..." She whined like she wanted to cry. She really doesn’t want to get up anymore.

"Up. Up. Up. You can do it. Just a little more." He pulled her and let her sit properly. "Drink this water first."

He even let her lean over her shoulder as he helped her drink some water.

"Good girl. Now, some food. I am sure you did not eat anything after our lunch together." He started feeding her with a spoon.

After knowing her for twenty plus years and being with her for ten plus years, he was used to taking care of her when she was tired.

He knew her habits and how to handle her as well.

Even though Helena whined, under Vernon’s pressure, she still opened her mouth and obediently ate whatever he fed her.

When she felt she couldn’t eat anymore, she resisted firmly. Vernon understood that was her limit and stopped as well. He helped her drink some water.

He got up from the bed and let her sleep again, "Go to sleep now. Good night."

Just as Vernon turned away from her to walk, he felt Helena grab his hand.

He turned back to look at her, "What happened? Do you need something?"

Helena, all tucked in, shook her head with her drowsy eyes before speaking, "Did you come to say something to me?"

Vernon chuckled, "Yes, but it was nothing urgent. You should go to sleep now. We can talk tomorrow."

Helena nodded and floated into dreamland in two seconds.

Looking at her cute face, Vernon couldn’t help but laugh. He pried her fingers open to free his hand and pinched her chubby cheek.

Then he took the glass and bowl before leaving her room. He switched the lights off and closed the door before leaving.

Since she was tired, he did not want to talk to the past Helena anymore. He could do that later.

In the morning, Helena freshened up and came downstairs for breakfast. She saw Vernon just come as well and greeted him with a smile, "Good morning."

"Good morning. Did you sleep well last night?" Vernon greeted back.

"Mhhmm." Helena nodded cutely like a little girl.

"You looked so tired yesterday. Are you good now?" Vernon asked as he ruffled her hair mischievously.

Helena habitually swatted his hand away and answered, "Yep. never felt better. Really, nothing could be compared to a good sleep."

Vernon nodded, and Helena looked at him and asked, "What did you want to talk to me about yesterday?"

"About our divorce," Vernon said out of the blue.
